New KMP Cessna 185
#1

Looks like KMP has pictures of its new 185:

Check out the price though; at $880 its the most expensive plane they have, even more than thier twins! May as well just go get in to the turbine racket if you are going to spend that much. Beauty of a plane though.

Only $140 extra for the panel:

Just go pick some money off your backyard money tree.
For that kind of loot the plane should have the accurate corrugated control surfaces, panel lines, and correct float fittings. The float struts look awful and would have to be completely reworked, so you'd just be throwing the stock components away.

$880 huh? I hope that includes engine, prop, a full cockpit interior, instrument panel, and working nav lights!

Maybe Andrew can tell us what is going on with the prices on his website. Surely he doesn't expect to sell very many 65" P-51s for $500 apiece. Or 40 size Taylorcrafts for $220. Even if those are in Canadian $, they seem grossly inflated. Fictitious retail prices perhaps?

Hi guys:
Some clarifications....
First the complete aircraft will be made from Fiberglass including the wings. YES, they will have the proper corrugated ailerons and flaps as suggested. The picture on the website is only showing the prototype with wooden wings and tail section. So please be patient and if anybody is curious about our pricing just call us toll free 888-968-7261 and we'll gladly explain (justify if necessary) any questions you may have.
Second, if you were to buy 42 inch fiberglass floats what do you think the price is for those alone from our competitor?
Anyhow I think getting a fully painted 96 inch fully composite ARF with Floats for our price is more than reasonable when looking at anything else the competition has to offer.
Not only is the entire plane beeing made from fiberglass we are switching our resin to Epoxy which is considerably more expensive then polyester resin.
The struts shown in the picture on the web are the parts from my Beaver. We needed to make something to support the plane so we used what we had. This beeing said I have not seen the final set up but should have those pics within weeks.
I trust this is enough to justify our position with regards to pricing.
Cheers,

Guys will not hesitate to drop $800 to $1000 plus for the latest greatest composite Yak, Edge, Extra, etc., that is just like three or four other ones at the field, but gripe about spending $800 for a nice glass and composite 96" span Cessna 185, which basically NO ONE ELSE MAKES??!?? Now there's logic in action.

Andrew:
You have not addressed the question of the $500 60 size Mustang (with wood wings) or the $220 40 size all wood Taylorcraft. But nevermind, I'm not in the market for either of those.
Perhaps you could explain why I should want to spend a few hundred $ extra for the composite wings and tail. As it stands, I would much rather have the wood components, at least they are repairable.

KMP has updated thier site with new pics at:

These things are beautiful, I wish they'd kept the earlier, 1974ish scheme instead of the 80's one they went with. Are those prices in Canadian or US dollars?

I agree. For the money they are asking for it, it should be a little more scale. Control surfaces shouldn't be smooth; float strut location is incorrect; wrong tail light; the 180 and 185 were Skywagons, not Skylines, front and bottom of the cowl isn't right; no panel lines (or float kit panel lines); no stinger tailwheel; stupid tail number instead of a good N-number (or sticker option to do your own); no interior/cockpit kit and an overly expensive dashboard add-on; and I could go on and on. All that said however, I would still like to get one. I'll hold off until I see one in person though, or at least until after someone posts a build article here on RCU.
I don't want to seem overly critical, but for the price, just kinda' expected more. I can't wait until someone gets one of these and mods it to look correct. Hmmmm...I wonder if Andy Kondor is gonna get mad at me again. Did we ever get a ruling on the whole US dollars or Canadian dollars question?

There seem to be a group of ARF buyers who are into scale and don't care what the price is. Andrew is doing what any good capitalist would do, he is raising the price to what the market will bear.

FYI: This Cessna 185 costs $406US in Australia. You could ship it here and still save money. http://www.modelflight.com.au/esm/cessna_185_esm.htm

Hi guys....just unpacked kmp 185 with floats.....very nice....first of all composite construction /paint work/fit and finish very good......im going to really like not having to reiron covering after every summer flight @ the lake like I do on my Beaver....the kit does deviate from scale ...but not in any important way in my opinion....cowel openings are not scale but im planning a ys140 for power angled 45 degrees inverted....this is so I dont have to cut side wholes in truely beautiful cowl....with nelson onboard/angle ys will tolerate invert running.so is it worth the money.??...well it is to me cause i hate wrinkled wing covering...and combo of splash h2o /sun is best thing to produce ugly wings/tail......the all composite wing/tail surfaces very light.....about the same I expect with my turbine models and you dont get any hardware/landing gear/turbine bypass/double walled exaust tube/cockpit kit/control links that drove the cost of my latest skymaster L39 1/5.5 scale to well over 4500.00....without engine/electronics...so this thing is a bargain....it has more composite parts/floats/hardware etc for 1/4-1/5 the cost of a chinese turbine arf....kp couch

hi Guys:
Its great to hear that you love the model. Unfortunately for those who didn't pre-order the next batch isn't getting here until the end of May.... fingers crossed. There are only 20 pieces (roughly) per batch so they are relatively limited edition models and sell through quite often before they even arrive.
Cheers,
