Yep I should just do another vacation day, spending an entire days gets things done much faster than an hour or two here and there....it never gets done that way.

Good luck setting up the DA. Let us know how it goes. The only problem I ever had with my DA 50 was that it died when inverted at idle. Make sure you stay high for your first blenders, and inverted harriers. Mine quit almost every time. Not trying to be a black cloud or anything but it's better to informed about these things. I hope my new ZDZ 50's (bought two) have the power of my ex-DA 50 though. Because other than the inverted at idle thing it had tons of power and ran very well.

i have a DA in a double vision,it's the only engine that has not given me any problems,i only have two other's a mvvs 45, taurus 52. you know my da did the same as your's,i was alittle rich on low end,but it doesn't do it now.engine will be here thursday,i should have it on saturday.
you know Dick Hanson gets some real good numbers from his zdz's,i always wanted to try one you know german made and all that kind of thing, but you hear guy's that have a hard time starting them, could be just the guy spinning the prop.
ENJOY!

Really most of the engiens out there are good engines... we all have a tendency to veer away from engines we've had an issue with... but one guy shad an issue with DA, another had one with ZDZ, another a Taurus. I'm pretty much a DA man myself... but have tried to keep an open mind to other engines... recently got the Brillie 366GT and it's a really nice option.

The ZDZ's are good and strong engines too... but they aren't German... but from the Czech Republic.

This plane wiill be happy with a variety of logos on the cowl...

Yeah no engine is perfect. There were other guys that had Taurus problems, there was some thread talking about it yesterday. He called Taurus and it turned out to be the timing (it was Silversurfer I think). Did you call that guy?

I will be taking some pic's once I mount the engine. The cowling turned out to be easy to cut once I got creative with some thick card stock paper. After installing the 4-40 blind nuts on the fuse, I determined where the 4-40 bolts went through the cowling (with the muffler off). Then I drilled those in the cowling. After that I made a template of the muffler with the cowling off. I made sure to mark and drill the 4-40 blind nut locations on that template so I could simply lay it on the inside of the cowling to trace the template onto it (I matched the 4-40 holes on the template with the 4-40 holes on the cowling). Man without doing that it would have been a sure hack job. It turned out great. Like I said, I'll post pic's tomorrow. The firewall is drying right now from gluing some extra ply for the ZDZ 50. Can't wait to finally bolt everything on and be done with the engine install.

I have one of the Ultra-RC yak's, love it. Fly's awsome. Have about 30 flights on it so far. What are most people putting the CG at? I havent really moved mine around to see how I like it best yet.

Nice pic's. Where did you get those Yak 54 graphics on the wings? I need some of those. Also what size is that spinner?

Here's some pic's of mine. Almost done. Just gotta mount batts and switches, and mount wheel pants. My pic's are not as bling as yours, more build pic's than anything. My all-up weight with a spinner and wheel pants is 16 pounds. That's about what I was expecting. My CG ended up around 6.5 inches with a 4 oz spinner and both batts on the engine box. This thing is on the tail heavy side. I can imagine with pipe is would be even further back. I have a wrap around pitts.

It's always nice when you can safety wire the muffler.

Looks good Joe...

Be careful with the splug wire running between the muffler... if it rubs it can cause RF and if it just gets too close it can melt the wire inside the braided sheath...

Ordered the graphics from here... http://www.scottsrc.com/other.html

I cant remember what size spinner I have, I wanna say its 3.25" but I will have to measure it and see. Its one of the white fiberglass ones from here... http://www.espritmodel.com/index.asp...OD&ProdID=4628

Think the spinner only weighs alittle over 2oz, its pretty light.

How about if I put it in that plastic split tubing made for automotive engine compartments? I have a big coil but didn't put it on the spark plug wire yet. Also I can tighten the ZDZ spark plug cap so it centers the wire between the stacks and won't touch them (it's actually not touching in the pic).

That should be O.K. as long as it doesn't swing enough to lay against the stacks... It looks fairly close to the can part as well.. so just watch it that it doesn't get too hot. It's mostly out in the air so it should be O.K.

Often a fella will anchor the other end somewhere on the firewall to help control it's movement...

Here's a shot of another install...

well i got the taurus 52 OUT! and the da 50 in and running, did the range check all is good 100 ft.with the ppm rx,i got to say it realy wasn't the taurus engine it self it was the STINKIN ch igniton with the rubber boot for the plug,if i just would have put the da in first off i never would have any problems,NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!,it's DA'S from here on in for me,i think if i would have had the bosch cap for the ch ignition i would not have had any trouble,i did get a new ch ignition with the bosch cap,but it was not working, could not get the taurus started with it,i called ch and told him and he said he is sending a new one out and just send the other one back.i am going to fly this bird this week as long as the weather is rite.
ENJOY!

Good luck with the DA. Hope you enjoy the flight.

I almost did my maiden today but a 5945 I bought off of RCU failed (the throttle). So I could barely even run the engine. Never again will I buy used gear. What a big disappointment. It was so nice out today.

BTW is there really no spell check in this forum? I can't find the button.

I use ieSpell to check my spelling in RCU.
Download ieSpell from http://iespell.com/download.phpieSpell

"ieSpell is a free Internet Explorer browser extension that spell checks text input boxes on a webpage.
It should come in particularly handy for users who do a lot of web-based text entry (e.g. web mails, forums, blogs, diaries)."

Joe
i bought five 5985's from Don's Hobby had the plane all set up and thought i was ready to go again and had one lock up,so even when you buy new it's still a 50 -50 shot that they are good.
ENJOY!

I hope it's better than 50/50. I was just dissappointed after working so hard to get it ready for Sunday, then carry all that stuff to field, and the throttle servo fails. I'll stop whining now. I'll just get a new servo and move on. I'm just glad it failed on the ground.

Yep,your rite there about it failed on the ground, but i no what you mean getting everything pack up and hit the field and being all excited to fly and have something go bad.good thing i used the 3" standoffs for the da,with two 2500 AA five cell on engine box and throttle servo, ignition box,
4" alum. spinner(P-51), 22-8 mejzlik my CG was at 6-7/8,it was at 6-1/2 with the taurus with same set up. and i was rite at 15-1/2 lbs, now i should be just under that.
ENJOY!

Well I got a new throttle servo. I'll install it tonight and do the maiden tomorrow (please winds stay away). Wish me luck. The first time I tried a maiden the 5 year old used 5945 failed right as I was starting the engine. Glad it failed then.

Joe
had a small amount of time today in between the rain and wind was down to 10-15,thats all i needed.plane flies EXTREMELY LIGHT!!!,but it's under 15-1/2 lbs. and the CG at 7" and still needs just a touch of down when inverted.make sure your idel is as low as you can go,the plane does not want to land it just keeps flying at walking speed, you could not get it to land with much head wind and say a bigger prop than a 22",you would half to push it down.i just did laps not much else, knife edge are easy.only got two flights in.
ENJOY!
