RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
My Hanger 9 stock taill wheel metal has broken due to alot of landings and taxing in grass. Id like the best upgraded tail wheel to fit the airplane. Id like to order it online from a reliable RC model company. I have check dubro but only found smaller tail wheels for electrics. I need a strong wheel since its a larger airplane. I fly from a grass field at the local club. Any suggestions would help. Easy assembly is required with parts include if its a tail wheel kit. Thanks.

Chris, I installed this Sig tailwheel, I think it is the medium size they have. Works great and looks pretty good too.

This is where I got it. http://www.wholesaletrains.com/Detail.asp?ID=200408655# I think no one else had them in stock. You need to add some ply to mount the hardware. Very easy.

Thanks Harry for the link. It looks like it stronger than the stock Hanger 9 tail wheel. It looks scale. I might check my local hobby store if there not in stock there I am ordering from this link.
Just to add about the Pawnee. Its a fun airplane to fly. The Saito 82 is a good scale match for the airplane. I can have 10 minutes of flight time with the stock fuel tank. Id like to add a larger tank but it might affect the CG. I added the new main gear wheels and they work great. The flaps work great on landing.

I agree, the Pawnee is really fun and relaxing to fly. I fly electric and use a pretty good sized brick (battery) and get about 20 minutes per flight. The only thing I did was to add about 1 oz. of lead mounted on the leaf spring on the tail wheel after the first couple of flights to get the CG just right. Wish the main gear was designed better, as it bends so easily. Oh well, it bends back just as easy.

Well I broke down and ordered the Robart Cub main gear today, should have it in a couple of days. While I was at it, I ordered the new Spektrum air speed module. Post some pics when I install the gear.

Flyallday,
I ordered the tailwheel. I have to check the assembly of the tailwheel. The flying wires are directly under the rudder. I might have to work aroung the wires. I might have to epoxy the assembly to the fuselage for strength during taxi and landing. I have to see if it needs that added weight shown in the photos. I hope its strong due to the weight of the airplane and able to handle the grass during taxi. The Hanger 9 wheel bent and broke in half with the wire due to landing. I use 15 percent fuel in the Saito. Id like to fly longer than ten minutes per tank.
Just a question for any of you Pawnee flyers. Are the markings used by Hanger 9 on a full size Pawnee? The green version. The larger Pawnee just produced has more of a scale covering look.
Any suggestions for adding more scale decals to the airplane making it look like a real full scale Pawnee? Id recover the airplane but it might take time and Id like to use a good quality fuel proof covering. A few photos show adding a sprayer. I have to remove the wings after flying or I would have added a sprayer. Thanks for any suggestions.

For the start, as stated by lear, just put your finger over the exhaust, with throttle wide open, and spin the prop until fuel spits out of the open carby. Close down and connect the glow stater and you're ready to go. Holding the exhaust closed pressurises the fuel tank causing the fuel to flow into the engine. The plane is an easy build and you won't have any problems. Check the glue inside the fuselage and put some extra on if necessary.

Well I finally broke down and installed the Robart landing gear ( inspired by Planejaw) and am very happy with the outcome. What a difference. Will test it out in a few days. Also installed an airspeed module.

Flyallday,
I ordered the tail wheel. It might be a week before it arrives. How should I attached the tail wheel strut to the fuselage? Should I epoxy the strut to the fuselage it has to be on strong due to landing in grass.
I noticed you still have the cub wheels with the plastic hubs. I added the new aluminum hub wheels and they work great. Id like to order the robart struts but I was wondering how you attached them to the fuseladge. I like the Pawnee but with the tank in the airplane I get about 10 minutes of flying time and maybe less if I manage the throttle. Any suggestions on increasing the flight time with the Pawnee?
Chris

Chris, for the tailwheel I cut open the bottom of the fuse and added 1/4 aircraft ply. Very easy and you screw the assembly into that. For the Robart gear, I added 1/4 ply where it attaches - also very easy. I am going to order some aluminium wheels from HK but they are ot of stock. Which hubs are you talking about? I added brass tubing in the hubs and got rid of the center collet. They work so much better, no slop. I fly electric so can't answer about your flight time.

Flyallday,
I thought your version was nitro. It still looks in good shape. Nitro or electric its a fun flying airplane. Its a great looking airplane to fly even if it for 10 minutes with fuel or lipos. The wheels supplied from Hanger 9 in the ARF work good if your flying only electric. The Nitro to makes the hubs crack or break. Your Pawnee should be ok since fuel wont be getting on the hubs.
I like the airspeed tube you added to your Pawnee.
Great work on the landing gear.
Id like to add more scale details to my airplane? I was checking out the full size photos of the aircraft. Any suggestions?

Some guys have added nav lighting, landing lights - really looks good. I think the new landing gear I added looks very scale although meant for a Cub. I did some cockpit detail and added a pilot. My pilot is WWll but everybody makes very positive comments. You could always add a dusting system. Might do that one day.

Got a chance to try out the landing gear today. Really worked out great! With the airspeed sensor, got it down to 7 mph with full flaps, looked like it was flying backwards.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Just an update... took her up for her first flight june 29 (was in ottawa untill today!) maiden... WHAT A DREAM! this is by far the most relaxing aircraft to fly, minus my hands shaking like a leaf lol . over 5 days she had 20 flights with no issues. I switched the pins that hold the wing struts to 1' rc car pins as one will hold both struts. running a OS 55ax with a 12 x 8 prop she flys great. as stated before the wheels are probably ok with electric flight. I will be looking at another option when it cones to the gear... probably robart landing gear as seen 3 posts up. thats off the piper cub i beleve? anywho great canada day flying weekend.. happy 4th july to our american friends

I have my CG set at 2.75" from the leading edge. You must be measuring from the very inside but 6 1/2 still sounds too far back.
