RE: New Seagull Extra 260 180
First flight report:
Maidened yesterday in horrible wind after work, but I said screw it and went for it. Wind literally shifted 180 degrees on me in my 8 minute flight, I had to land opposite of how I took off. Crazy. Using an OS160, 18X6 Xoar prop, Hitec 5485's, and a 6.0V 2000mah nimh pack. Spektrum AR7000 rec and JR 10X TX.
Feels extremely tail heavy with the CG at 9.5cm at the wing tip (furthest back as recommended in the manual). Elevator was almost unbelievably sensitive even on low rate, mid and high rates were just about unusable for normal flying even with 60% expo on high rate.... A flip to inverted sometimes showed level flight hands off, however a touch of elevator would cause it to climb and continue to climb after the stick was released. Other times it would simply climb when flipped over. Wind might have been playing games with me as well.... I had to put the 5-cell battery under the turtledeck to balance there so it will be easy to move the CG up a bit if I choose to, but after I toned down the elevator low rate to 18% (in flight, alone, through my 10X menus, was interesting) it was docile enough to fly nice. So I might leave it. Don't know yet.
Other than that it seemed to fly well, but it was so gusty and the gusts were coming from every direction, I didn't even really bother to totally trim it out. Rolls on high rate are lightning fast, elevator is extremely sensitive. Climbs forever with the 1.60 even though I had it running extremely rich because I was concerned with cooling, since I only cut the cowl for the glow plug, not the entire head. However, after landing, I could put my finger on the cylinder and it was not too hot to keep my finger there, so I think it's OK for now. Summer may change things......
Landing was absolutely beautiful, which is one reason why I might leave the CG where it is. I love a plane that I can just float in and plop down in a 3 point landing at almost walking speed, and that's exactly how this one landed with the CG where it was.
Suprisingly, the OS 160 left almost no oil at all on the airframe, there was just a very light misting on the landing gear. Fuse was clean. And it was running so rich it looked like I had a crappy smoke system....
Overall I am thrilled so far, can't wait to get a flight in with better wind conditions.

LOL, they were on the same decal sheet that the gas tank sticker came from. I think it was from my 20% Byron Extra 300 kit. I'm sure that any vinyl sign shop could make them up. There are a few guys advertizing in the rcu market that make decals pretty cheap.

RE: New Seagull Extra 260 180
Flew again three flights after work yesterday.
It was dead calm. Perfect.
Plane flies great, although I think I might change from a 18X6 to an 18X8, seemed like it was moving slow for the amount of throttle I was giving it.
It's also too tail heavy I've decided. My low rate elevator is insanely low, probably about 3/8 of movement at the widest part of the elevator, and I can still do pretty tight loops. It is also very unstable in pitch, seems to sometimes have a mind of it's own as far as wanting to dive or climb with little reason. I also do not like how it seems to go into a somewhat unstable snap roll / spin if I hold full rudder / ail / low rate elevator to long, starts to spin very fast out of nowhere and does not recover as fast as I would like. I have the 5 cell battery attached to the first former behind the canopy (about 4 to 6 inches behind the canopy) so I'm just going to move it up toward the front of the fuselage and see how it flies that way.
After 3 flights I am still amazed that the airframe is clean. No exhaust oil at all on the airframe. Only place I had a little oil was the gear legs and wheelpants. Very happy about that. I am using the fuel tank from the Funtana 125 since I already had it set up and plumbed, and it fit very well, and after a 12 minute flight I have just under a 1/2 tank left. Seems to be pretty good on fuel.
Landings have all been perfect, tailwheel-first touchdowns. I just fly it in at about 1/4 throttle or so, then cut to idle at about 3 feet up and let it come down softly onto the tailwheel, with the mains touching down an instant later.
Overall first impressions after 4 total flights now, is that this is one nice flying plane. Looking forward to many more flights.

RE: New Seagull Extra 260 180
Some photos from yesterday, the ground is wet because it had downpoured about 10 minutes earlier, then cleared to a blue sky with no wind at all. As I was packing up another storm rolled in and I got the photo of the plane with the cloud in the background. It started hailing and pouring as I was driving home. Someone must have wanted me to fly that day because I had about an hour of absolutely perfect conditions between two terrible storms........

RE: New Seagull Extra 260 180
hi there
i decided to swap the 180 sc as it belonged to a big 1/4 scale cessna bird dog
so i have replaced it with the super tigre 3000 brand spanking new =]
same again would this be ample power to do extream 3d?

RE: New Seagull Extra 260 180
Alright, stupid question time. This is my first large plane with a 2 piece tube-mount wing (mostly stuck with foamies, and larger one-piece wings before), and the instructions aren't clear on the installation of the wing tube. Do I epoxy the tube into the fuselage like the horiz. stab's tube? The instructions just say to "Attach the aluminium tube into fuselage.". Having it removable would make it easier to pack, but I'm concerned that it may be an instruction oversight and it may "depart the aircraft" at some point.
Building mine with a DLE-30...looking forward to some big plane fun (even when there's a breeze at the field).
Cheers,
David

RE: New Seagull Extra 260 180
nice thought.I am thinking a 30cc is plenty and should fly great.a 26 seems too small and then would use my 180 which is currently flying my big PT-19.ugh decisions..

I have a pt 19 dynaflite beautifully done and with an 18x6 it performs admirably.I was going to get a reliable g26 but its weigh to heavy even without EI.so either I get a 30dle for my 260 or swap out the 180 and put it in the 260.nahhhhh!

RE: New Seagull Extra 260 180
I gather nobody flies this plane on a dle 30 and now I am thinking of selling it and going with an aeroworks or wildhare as I know they will do 3D well. but I could be persuaded to keep it if someone could share their experience ona 300 cc motor .I know a 160 will work but I want a gas engine ..

RE: New Seagull Extra 260 180
Ya back some pages ago a guy or two have the dle 30 in them. I am going to get one and yank the 26 after a couple more tanks of gas in it. THe 26 isnt a amazing 3d machine but it works 2 mistakes high.
