You can buy an ARF for $70 or $1070 (and more), so what part of this spectrum are you talking about? ARFs are still cheaper than most BIY kits. I guess there is always scratch building, however, not many scratch builders.

Just depends what you are wanting... a stick ARF, a SPort scale ARF, a 3D machine, a Composite ARF...
THERE ARE NOW ARFS for every budget... and they are also built of varying qualities, materials, and degrees...
SO ... overall the ARFS are just more plentiful... more choices and more pricepoints..
TAKE wine for instance...
There is $2 Buck Chuck or $$$$$$$ wine..... such as the Dom. Romane Conti 1997 - app. $1,540 bottle
Thi$ one i$ only $3695
http://www.composite-arf.com.hk/ar/Product?793000
But worth every $$$$$
-cheers...

You underquoted the price of the Cessna, flynte. It is now $219.00, which is hardly a bargain in my opinion. I let my discount membership expire there, since there's no reason to have it when I can sometimes find stuff cheaper some place else.

Got news for ya, scratch building sure isn't cheaper !!! I thought that till I started building one. I found that to buy a kit, say a "60" size on Ebay runs around at least a 100 bucks, give or take. I'm buildind a Mid West Hots & have most all parts needed. I figure I'll have around $180. in it by the time I'm done.

All planes are a bargain, even the brand name big boys are selling us unlimited 50cc 3D machines with hardware for 550-650.Not many people that I have met,can duplicate the quality build and covering on these planes
Quality 60 size warbirds with (usable)retracts for 260 bucks
100cc Aerobats for 1000
When I built alot in the 90's ,
kits for .60-.90 glow were about 180-270$
Got a TopFlight Corsair for 240$ and a Great Planes Skybolt and many others for about the same. These were chunky Diecut plywood monsters and were tedious and expensive to finish and were heavy.Todays ARF,with some exceptions are good deals, even if the price bounces up and down a bit.Around here, planes are costing less and less each year, somewhat related to the near par currency lately.

Declining value of the US Dollar against other foreign currencies, increasing labor costs in China where most of the ARF's are built and really BIG increases in transportation costs.
Just the way it is now....[

OH, just noticed you're from our neighbor up north, you can disregard the Dollar comment as even the Loonie is worth more than a US Dollar now, but the other observations are still valid.

It has a lot to do with the cost of fuel. I heard someplace where just a year a go it cost $3000 to ship a cargo container from the orient to the US. Now it costs $8000. I cannot vouch for the figures but it sounds like it could be the case.........RJ

I know what you mean a couple months ago Tower Hobbies was selling everything cheaper.
Super Tiger engines went up:
40 was $49.99 now $59.99
51 was $79.99 now $84.99
GP ARF’s
Cessna 182 was $199.99 now $219.99
Cub fabric covered $199.99 now $229.99
Giant Super Sporster $299.99 now $319.99
That’s just to name a few.
What I can’t believe is raising prices during a recession!

politics aside....the economy is effecting this hobby. i noticed that there are less people showing up at our flying site.the hobby shops in my area are hurting bad. a few weeks ago i had posted on another thread simular to this one that a guy i know works part time in a local hobby shop and he told me their sales in rc planes had dropped way off. their biggest sellers was rc nitro cars and trucks and that has come to a screeching halt. now back to the topic of this thread. yes arfs have gone up in price. thats because this country is being controlled by the oil nations.

Let's face it guys, fuel prices are outragous... China is cutting the supply of Glow Fuel, and the cost of shipping products is higher than it has ever been.
This is not a cheap hobby, anything to do with aviation was never cheap anyway. I'm not being political, just expressing fact. Hope it gets better... but one of many lifes leasons tells me it will get worse first. JMHO
No matter what I will find away to keep flying... full size and small.

I speculate that as the standard of living in China gets better, workers will get a taste of "the good life" and demand more until prices rise enough that another cheap source is found.
Or, I'm an idiot and don't know what I'm talking about. [sm=bananahead.gif]
