Here's some pictures of the scale Lancair ES I used for the color scheme. The guy who painted my lancair couldn't see the wingtips well enough in the photo, so he just added a simple gold line instead of the slashes. I may change that later if I get the energy! I pretty much just want to fly it for now. I went from paint to full assembly and building all the internal structures in about 3 weeks and I lost alot of sleep! Thanks goes to Ryan of my club for painting this plane for me and helping me get it in the air before our Spring Big Birds weekend! - Tim

I just finished one of these yesterday after a ton of work.
20 hours my foot.
Anyway it turned out super and I cannot wait to fly it.
Also using the Saito 91. Stock muffler with bottom of cowl cut open and also cut where rocker arms stick through.
Not as clean as hoped but better cooling for sure.
I am entering my first scale contest on Saturday with it. First flight will be tomorrow which is Friday the day before contest.
This plane looks sooooo good even in the stock setup.
Loudbikes, yours is a vision for sure. The rear hatch door looks great and also makes radio install so much easier.
I ended up extending the radio tray and mounting a 6 cell nicad at the very rearmost extension on the tray to move CG back. It is screwed in normal with velcro to hold it as well. Not planning on violent maneuvers so should work fine.
The radio install on this bad boy is a big pain but all said and done it works well.
I will post pics and results of contest later.

Awesome Cashpoboy! Good luck! If it helps, I use 30% flaps for takeoff and 90% for landing. Sometimes I use the 90% for takeoff too if I want to really get in the air fast, or if I'm flying off grass. Without flaps you'll use the whole runway for takeoff. Mine balances exactly where the instructions say and flys perfect. Is your Saito broken in yet? They come really rich on the low end. My first lancair used a 2 blade Pro Zinger 13x8 and my new one uses a 3 blade graupner 12x8. I would recomend either one. Looking forward to hearing about your weekend. - Tim

My Saito was bought used so I don't know if it is broken in or not. I am counting on it being broken in.
Using a Master Airscrew 3 blade 13-8 with an aluminum TruTurn Spinner.
This looks really great up front but what a pain to get the prop bored out for the TruTurn locking nut setup!
I am sure you know what I am talking about.
A little nervous to fly it as pretty as it looks but should be fine.
Today will be its maiden.

yeah, I had to bore my props out the same way. Used a small drill press I have at home. The front bore hole can be slightly oversized as long as the back of the prop has a nice fit. It's hard not to get an out-of-round hole with a drill bit. My drill press doesn't turn exactly true either. Be sure to keep an eye on your motor mount bolts. I had my motor come loose from vibration on my first lancair. You can use teflon tape on the muffler threads. Seems to help keep it tight and protects the threads from stripping. -Tim

So I flew it today just a few hours before sunset.
20 mph wind.
I was a bit scared but it handled it fine.
Supposed to be high winds for the contest tomorrow.
I should have a bit of an advantage since this plane is like an arrow.
With full flaps headed into strong wind I got it to stop dead in the air.
Already feeling fairly confident with this plane.
No bad tendencies so far.

You might consider using a prop reamer. Very few worries about it not boring true.

Aside from the fine flight handling of this aeroplane I always get compliments on its looks and scale flight characteristics.

Keith, we can't use a prop reamer because the hole for the Tru-turn adapter for the Saito .91 is several sizes bigger than the shaft hole size. You may be using another engine entirely I'm thinking. That's ok. And yes, this airplane always gets alot of attention! It has such a beautiful profile. - Tim

Sorry for the last two posts but I could not figure out how to post pictures.
Here are some more of my Lancair.
Flew it today 6-12-10 in a scale contest (fun scale) and so far am in first place.
Won't be able to fly Sunday but my scores might hold up to win anyway.
Flew for first time the day before contest and flew well with no bad tendencies.
Scored the only perfect landing all day according to one judge.
I was nervous as all get out as this was my first contest. My thumbs were shaking like a leaf in the breeze.
Could not seem to settle them down but did well anyway.
That's me, the little guy out in front of all those big warbirds!

Some pictures of the exhaust, rocker arm, and glow plug holes in the cowl.
By the way, I placed 2nd at the meet in fun scale civilian.
There were only about 7 or so planes in this category. It was my first event and I was pleased.
I had a ton of fun.

Hi Cashpoboy. I have the same set up except for an O.S 4 stroke, Pitts muffler and a more scale nose leg. I was intrigued as to whether you get enough cooling air flow in the cowl? Not a large exit around the exhaust.

Not real sure on exactly how well it cools.
The engine stays running and never quits.
The hole in the cowl above the head is fairly large and I suspect it helps a lot in cooling things down.
Also, it is difficult to see in the photo but the hole around the exhaust is much larger to allow for the nose gear movement.

Yes I still have my Lancair and love it.
Have not flown it in a while.
Last time I flew was at the Texas Scale Championships in Ft Worth last spring.
I went home with first prize in Fun Scale class and won an Airtronics radio.
Get ready for a fairly difficult build. One of the hardest ones I have ever assembled but worth it.

I had one also.Wasnt too happy with it.Great looking plane once finished,though. Had a .91 Magnum 4-stroke in it. Sold it at local swap meet.I build heavy, so the wing loading was a little high.

Well, i'm a pretty experiencied builder.By far,this was one of my more difficult builds. The servo control rods installation require you to have very small hands.2.The battery/receiver mounting would've been easier if u had access from the side of the fuselage.3 My wood firewall was delaminated from the fiberglass fuselage , thus i added epoxy to fill the void, which in turn made it quite nose heavy, which in turn, i had to install the rcvr battery pack in the aft end of fuselage for balance-dont like to add lead weight if i can get away from it. 3. Wheel pants/wheels are too small if you fly off of grass, like i do.Make sure you fiberglass the center section of the wing if you are gonna be pulling high g's with it, otherwise you're gonna have a instant bi-plane. Mine because of the high wing-loading flew and landed more like a P-51 warbird.I realize Great Planes tried to keep it scale as much possible, but in doing made it was not one of my favs for a model. And i used not 1, but 3 construction articles as a guide. Also because of the small wheels on grass, if u flip it over on landing, u gonna crack the front windshield-guaranteed, so break out the canopy glue. Main thing, try to fly it scale more like a motor glider than a hi-speed racer unless you re-inforce the wings really good. Also the servo control rod formers installation will definitely have you scratching your head.Also if you ever plan on removing the wing servos,wrap scotch tape around them, as they want you to C/A them to the wing or come up with your own better way of doing it.Nowadays, i like mine to just hang out in the breeze. Easier install and adjustment. Other than that, you'll like the finished product 'cause you will have put your blood,sweat and tears in it, literally, IMO.

I agree with Lonestar man for the most part.
Mine flies great. You must never pull hard elevator if speed is not sufficient. It likes to high speed stall. This is because of the high aspect wing.
THE PLANE LOOKS FRICKIN' GREAT THOUGH.
With full flaps it really slows down well for landing.
I like the way it flies very much.
I put my battery on a long piece of plywood (tongue) that goes way down the fuse toward the tail. I epoxied velcro to fuse and back of plywood with battery on it to keep it attached to fuse. The plywood 'tongue' is screwed down near wing mount screws and velcro holds it at the other end where the battery is. Battery is zip tied to plywood. This is a pain to do but worth the effort to keep overall weight down without adding too much tail weight to balance.
This will always be in my hangar. Not For Sale. Just too dang cool to look at. Flies Great.
