Default Super Tigre G51 powering a BH Spitfire 40 information

Does anyone know if any of the Spitfire 40 versions put out by Black Horse had retracts? I bought one at Hobby People over Memorial Day for 79 bucks and it's fixed gear. Smoking deal, but it'd be nice if I could buy a wing with retracts.
Thanks,
Chris...

I found out that the Black Horse Spitfire 40 never was offered with retracts. The new BH Spitfire 120 sounds interesting even with it's "Spiteful/Sea Fang" gear.
Anyone flying a BH Spitfire out there?

Looking to power this with a Super Tigre 51 and a Pitts style muffler of some type. Any good suggestions on a muffler for an inverted mount?
Thanks,
Chris...

Iwas just at the east coast importer of BH ARF's today. The spit forty is not set up for retracts. He had all three versions including the new 40 versions with the chin scoop. None of them are set up for retracts. Retracts can be put in just about anything though. I really didn't look at it close enough but the cowl looks large enough for anything.

Thanks for the note Chistech,
I called George about a replacement wing for my son's Speed Air and he told me about the Spitfire models and found out the same thing. Too bad, it'd look great with retracts.
I am making a mock up for a muffler so the JTEC guys can make one for me. I think it'll all fit inside the cowling OK.
I think I'll dress up the gear with Robart strut covers and wheels and add some scale-like gear doors.
It's for my 12 year old son too, so that's why all of the care and grooming on an 80 dollar ARF!

It's my youngest son's 13th birthday on August 13th so I gave him his present a bit early so we could work on it before he leaves for his mom's soon. Here is the BH Spitfire 40 mocked up for fit, and with an eBay 25 dollar Italian Super Tigre 51 installed with supplied spinner, which looks pretty good. The model is a nice little ARF, and he likes it very much, the most important part.

Looks great
It's great your son is in the hobby
My dad always wanted me to go flying but he'd never let me fly.
It wasn't till I became a grown man that I got into the hobby.
I have 2 other brothers that never mess with the hobby because of that

Thanks guys,
I'm a lucky guy, for sure. Dad taught us all to fly, models and real ones. He kept us all busy, and involved. I try to pass that along.
Hey Gizmo, my shop is productive!
Here are some pics of the tail. I used micro balloons and finishing resin to fill the hideous gaps! I added the dorsal fin so it doesn't look like a P-40.

So it's midnight and I'm done for the night. Here's some pics of the dorsal and some decals stuck on. They are actually markings of a family owned Mk IX in England, so I went for it. I'm going to clear the whole thing in matte tomorrow if things work out.

Stuntflyr,

That looks exactly like my Phoenix Models spitfire which does have retracts but costs about $60 more. You might want to look into it to see if you can pick up a wing from them to see if it will fit. When my replacement wing gets here, i'll send you a photo of the wing dowls and maybe some measurements.

Thanks Nitro. I saw that model and wondered the same thing. The Phoenix wing and canopy would make it look really finished.

Back from Wings Over Chino at Prado Airpark home of Pomona Valley MAC in SoCal. Nice show, cool ships, very interesting flying days with Santa Ana winds from the northeast and moderate 80 degrees on both days. Michael got a lot of up close and personal time with the Spitfire as we troubleshot the engine run which finally ended up being the head bolts that needed tightening (20 dollar eBay find, who knows how long it sat!) It really started to show promise by dark, naturally.
It weighs about 4 1/2 pounds, the G51 is plenty of power with a MA 11x6, JTec muffler, the little 4 oz tank is a little shy now that it is actually making power so I'll put and 6 oz in it. Flies OK, a little too much adverse aileron yaw so I'm going to redo the ailerons and add differential. The gear is great, and a little too far aft so I'll bend it forward, I made four deadsticks with it and never scratched it making long beautiful wheel landings, my one power on and it nosed over at touchdown!
Here are some pics.

Ok Kostas, glad to see that you saw this. How is your P-36? My Dad has the kit but hasn't put it together yet.

Here is a CMP Spitfire 50 model that is available in the US that looks better to me than the Phoenix or the BH Spitfire 40 model.
