Hi Guys. Did the radio conversion to 2.4. Stable as a rock. Tested the FrSky system with the cloud chaser using telementry for signal check.
tried to fly her on Sunday..That bloody engine refused to start.. It has been about 8 weeks since it last ran...It was prob was a good sign as I just crashed my Nemesis while flying through sun light and I was in a grumpy mood, Dont know why this crash upset me..

I see there has been little activity on this thread for almost a year now. I just got a Gilmore racer from hobby people today. It's really a beautiful ARF and I have really become a fan of black horse models. I hope to get started on the plane this weekend. I have a Saito 450 r to install in the plane. It looks like a pretty easy build. I am sure fitting the engine will be the most difficult part. Thanks to all that have posted all the great pictures of their build I will probably just post pictures of the engine installation and final outcome. I have scoured the you tube for as many of the black horse Gilmore racer's I could find and I'm really psyched to build and fly this classy 1930s Golden age of aviation aircraft.

Roscoe!!

Thank you !

Glad to see this thread is still going, ive had many flights with mine now,CRRC 50 has plenty of power for it using a 22x10 prop, this models flys really nice and it will float in as long as the engine is running, ive had one deadstick due to the motor running too lean at the bottom end and lets just say ive never flown a model that loses soo much airspeed in so little time and drop out the sky, luckily i only damaged a wheel cover so be aware.

I just spotted this video on YouTube. This gent is running the exact same set up that I plan on building.

Was anyone tempted to mod the undercarriage to scale location ? Could it be easily done ?

Given the way the BH model is built I doubt it could be easily done.

The Pilot-1 Red Lion has more scale like gear.

Had my re-maiden of the Gillmore today the engine was out of tune, too rich and did a landing, did a bounce then hit a "pot hole" which broke the LH olo strut mount out of the wing. had the cam on board..Need to remember to dial in some expo as you can see the bird is very responsive on the elevator even at low rates. I had 5 cams recording this flight because the guys didnt think I would fly it..

I used a large fibreglass fuselage gear mounted on the wing bottom on my 60 sized BH Red Lion. Looks pretty good covered with the vacuform strut covers.

Ok guys, What am I doing wrong. 3 Landings and 3 failures.

2 weeks ago I tore out the UC mount after what I though was a pot hole. Today 1st landing as I just touched down she flipped over. No damage. The 2nd flight Im sure it was an almost 3 point (havent seen the vid yet, but was told it was as well) when the UC mount tore out of the wing again....These 2 flights I dialed in plenty of expo as I can be a bit of a Elevator jocky. This plane has been flown before by our FI. This is the 3rd time Ive flown it and also the 3rd flight with the new engine.

In your videos you appear to be landing on sand each time.

Sand puts a lot of drag on the wheels, even if they spin up quickly.

As the plane's weight increases, the wheels tend to dig into the sand further complicating the drag...

The end result is exactly what you are experiencing, the plane noses in violently, particularly because the C.G. is relatively close to the wheels.

The Gilmore might be ill suited to landing in sand. You want a plane that has the wheels further forward with the C.G. significantly back from the wheels.

The will prevent the nose overs.

Pattern planes with their swept back landing gear would be equally problematic, as would many scale racers.

Ive had 3 landings with out any problems, I remounted the UC forward 25mm and found the tyres were ballooning at landing and rubbing on the U part of the UC. Made up some new axles and spacers...No way the covers are going to fit.
The last landing was a bit of a hop, skip and jump. the RH aileron servo came adrift in the wing, prob due to the UC problems.

Heh... enjoyable video.

Great shots of the Red Lion.

It looks like your foamy has some serious rudder flutter going on.

I just ordered a Gilmore Red Lion plane from the Hobby People. I plan to use my Saito 450 R3 radial engine to power this plane. I will provide additional posts and pictures as the build progresses.

Best wishes and good safe flying.

Had a perfect flight on Sunday without breaking the UC.

Has any one set up for flaperons to slow the bird down for landing?? Mine you have to come in hot but then the ground effect will take over.

I think that setting up the plane for flaperons is a good idea and I will probably try to do just that on mine. My plane should arrive any day now, I received shipping notification from the Hobby People.

Best wishes and good safe flying.

I received my BH Gilmore Tuesday evening and started work on it yesterday. Not much need to post pictures of the build since many are already posted on this forum. I will wait to post pictures of the engine installation. The plane is of nice quality and much of the work has been done. I don't use CA hinges on larger airplanes so I am changing to the giant scale nylon hinges that will be pinned. I had a bad experience with aileron CA hinges that broke on a Hanger 9 150 size P-47 a few years back so I no longer trust CA hinges on larger airplanes. Larger airplanes means 60 size or larger in my HO.
Best wishes and good safe flying.

I ran out of things I could do on the Gilmore today until I receive parts that are on order. Fortunately, my order came in this afternoon and I can go back to work again tomorrow. I received some more hinges and several Hitec 645 MG servos so the build can continue.

Best wishes and good safe flying.
