Sonnich
I was asking you that since the manual say "The Thunderbolt Glow Plug is recommended for best all around perfomance with this engine", i do not if this make any diference.
Regards

I cant imagine it.

The engien ran great for most of the flight.

I bet it will run even better when you run 30 liters though it, so it is broken in fully

Hi Sonnich,

I got the same setup as you and it fly's absolutely nice, also the CG with 12cm as the manual says is working for me. On the first flights I noticed that the engine power cuts down during the flight, I figured out that this was because of lower idle it flats the lower cylinders and this is the start of getting problems. I solved it with having always power on the glow plug, since then I got no problems at all.
Not to forget I fly it as a racer always full power and fast, landings reasonable slow.

Hope this helps a little for your next flights.

Sonnich, sorry to hear about the crash landing. I think your engine problem is due to overheating. From the pictures, I cannot see that you cut any air EXIT holes in the cowl. The rule of thumb is to generally have twice the exit area compared to the entry area. On that huge cowl you have a massive amount of air entry area, the air just turbulates in the cowl instead of flowing through it. If there isn't a reasonably smooth flow of cool air over the engine, it will eventually overheat and quit running.

I would suggest doing the next flight after repairs without the cowl. If the engine runs fine, you have your answer.

Thanks.

There is a lot of exit area for the air to pass out throgh.
But you are right, the front intake area is massive compared to the exit.

I will try it without the cowl, and also have glow on all the time, like Primi has.

Sonnich

I was thinking about an overheating too, but i have been watching at this video and Philippe did not cut the cowl.

Yea, I was thinking that too.

But....maybe his is broken in more than mine is.

I bet it takes many liters of fuel, before the engine is running super smoothe, and cooler.
I have only burnt about 5 liters, so I do not realy considder mine broken in. It just ran so well on the ground, I did not think it would misbehave in the air.......but ofcourse, nothing works 100% the first time you do anything

Rebuild in progress.

Aparently there are no spare parts for this plane in europe [:@]
I found a 30mm alu tube, which fits inside the stock 32mm wingtube.
Fixed the wing skin on the leadong edges.
Cowl is being repaird....

behind the firewall be prepaired to use a lot of fiberglass cloth+thinned 30'-40' epoxy !!!!

It will ad lots of strength and durability!

I also see that one of the valve covers is cracked....is the upper crankcase cracked too ?[]

The firewall is built quite well as it is.
The designers have been very clever. If I had strenghened it, the damage to my plane would have been far worse.
It has acted as a crumple zone, and disapated the crash very well.

Luckily, it is only the rocker cover that is damaged, and nothing else on the engine

Excellent work Sonnich! [sm=thumbup.gif]

This Phoenix shall rise from the ashes to fly again and again.

Can you source a spare rocker box cover? If not, I suppose [link=http://jbweld.net/index.php]JB Weld[/link] (do you have it there?) or an equivalent and some quality time with a jewelers file and the cover could be mended.

I am really happy to see you repairing this airplane.

Thanks Tom.

I can get a new one from Justengines from the single cylinder ASP` s .
They dont cost much.

But Im not 100% sure which one fits.

is it the 61, 70 or 80 cylinder head that is on the ASP 400FS ?

It is the 80.

5x80=400, hence the "FS-400"

I am entertaining putting a seidel st 9-90 in this plane. The engine weighs 8 Lbs but the real airplane shows a shorter cowl and the engine further back. It seem removing much of the engine box would help with CG and a more correct scale appearance. The engine diameter is perfect!!! The whole front of the cowl will be filled with the engine like the original. Did the airplane fly reasonably light? Thanks -Tom

Show us some pictures

The plane has lots of lift, so it should not be a problem to add some more weight.
It did not feel heavy in the air at all....if anything, it was like a foamy..

First flight today. DLE 55 ran flawless. 1/3 Throttle, take off role about 100 ft. It is a light plane had a hard time slowing down for landing. Had to shut the engine off and let it float in. I didn't check the idle rpm but the engine was just barely running at idle. It is a great flyer. A little touchy on the elevator.

Thank you for the information! The engine is 260 mm in diameter so it will be about 4 mm larger in diameter than the cowl rim in front. Looks like about a 5-10 mm clearance on the inside. The prop I would use is a 24x12. -Tom

Got the Oracover #23 red on the leading edges.
Dry fit the engine after the repair.

All looks good again, exept the cowl

Still have to remove the wheel pants, and repair the split in them too.
nd check my radio gear and glow module.

Is that the field at O'Neill's Airport?
