e-flite Apprentice 15e motor swap
 

<div id="post_message_16983066">With all the talk about the stock motors failing, I wanted to switch to either a *real* Power 15 or a Power 25 (with appropriate ESC upgrade).

I've heard some say these motors are a 100% direct bolt-on, while a couple said that a different prop adapter and prop (e.g. APC) are needed when swapping out to one of these motors.

Are the Power 15/25 a direct bolt-on, or are the above items needed?

I have an EFlite Pawnee and the recommended motor is the Power 15 but the Power 25 is often used as it is a pretty large aircraft. The Power 25 is a direct drop-in upgrade as they use the same "X" mount. What ESC are you using now? I use the 45 AMP Pro Brushless ESC with my Power 25. It's also made by EFlite and allows more cells and servos than a regular ESC. They're a bit pricey but work great.

Ihave the stock ESC, but was going to upgrade to either the 40 or 60 E-flite Pro...... The reason for looking at the 60 is for future planes (never know what you'll get into).

On the subject of ESC's, what's the difference between the E-flite standard and Pro models?

The standard ESC only accepts maybe 4 servos and a 3cell LiPo. The Pro accepts up to 7 servos, I think and many more LiPo cells. If you were to use more than the recommended servos and LiPo's with the standard ESC, you have to use a separate BEC. Castle Creations makes a really good one. Your possible choice of the 60 is a good one. I like to use an ESC that is more than the one recommended as they run cooler. I have two 60's running now and they are flawless.

You want to swap out your motor & esc because you heard of failures in the stock equipment??? WHY not just fly the crap out of it & not worry about things that might happen! If you must through money at it, the 60 size outrunner is Tooo big for your airframe, the battries you will need won't fit. Step up one size higher in motor Kv for better performance. eg, 800 to 1050 as an example.

We were talking about a 60AMP ESC, not the Power 60 motor.

Perhaps there was some confusion........... Iwas considering a 25 outrunner motor and a 60AESC.

And to answer another question about just keeping the stock motor -&gt; Idon't want a failure mid-flight, as some have reported.

Ah, 60 size esc, my appoligies, still by the nature of there design, very little can go wrong with an outrunner motor, if you have some time on it and no problems, it will most likely keep on spinning.

Reading through posts somewhere on this or other forums, the stock outrunner appears to be a very wink link in the model. It's not the standard E-flite Power 15, but something of lower quality - sorry don't have the links to these posts...... but "many" incidents of damage with just a single prop strike on OEM motor.
