GP Super Stearman

I have a used RCGF 26 cc engine that I was going to put on my new stearman. However it calls for the distance to the prop from firewall to be 6-1/4" which means I will have to cut a hole in the wall to accomodate the rear of the engine. The DLE 30 would be the perfect distance without cutting a hole. Which do you think would be the better bet? Does anyone have a DLE 30 out there on the stearman? Good size?

Thank

I don't know about the DLE30 but the DLE 20 fits nice on it an will leave the 26 in the dust

I was wondering about the motor... didn't know if it had enough power... anyone else?

More than enough. The 20 will fly it fine. There are those that put the 30 on, and say it's wonderful. It's really overkill. You wouldn't use all the engine. The plane is not 3d, it is just a very nice flier. I have a 26 on mine, and takeoff and most flights are accomplished with about 1/4 throttle using an 18x6 prop.

What prop should I use on the DLE 20?

i had an OS 1.60 twin which is the same weight as the DLE 30, and it balanced perfect, so give consideration to that before deciding on the 20.
sure the 20 will fly it, but not much better than the 1.20 four stroke that GP recommends.
take a look at the original GP Super Stearman thread to see what other used for power and found the plane to be much responsive.

i'm not knocking the 20 as i have a DLE 30, i'm just pointing out that while the 20 will fly it, the weight and drag of the SS will need you to be above 1/2 throttle.

if you do go with the 20 though, the 17x6 is a good starting point.
just figure to add some lead in the nose for balance.

here is the original GP Super Stearman thread.

keep in mind too that the DLE 30 will swing a 20x6 prop which will actually improve ground handling.

I have a put the DLE 30 in my yak and I love it. The only thing I worried about on the stearman was having to cut to much of the cowl away for the muffler. If it was only a small amount I wouldn't worry about it. May end up with the same problem on the DLE 20 though. I don't particularly want to put a different muffler on it.

RE: GP Super Stearman

i see your point.
there is a muffler for the 30 that wraps it around to the back.
i don't have a link to it, but i'll find it if you want.

I mounted a DLE30 on my SS and the stock muffler fits great. Minimal cutting (on the bottom) of the cowling. PERFECT ENGINE for the SS

Bingo. That's what I have been waiting to here. One DLE 30 on the way. Thanks for all the replies.
