tail wheel for US 60 needed
 

I am in the process of building my 2nd H9 Ultra Stick 60. I m not really sure I like the design and hardware for the tail-wheel and assembly that comes with the ARF. I would like something that is a little more rugged, and would like to use a larger wheel. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I used the sullivan tail wheel bracket and the stock wheel. Just match the bracket size to the weight of the plane.

I am doing the same thing, with the sullivan. Can you send some pics of the spring to rudder configuration? Not sure the best way to go about it.

I wish I could but I buried my US 60 a couple of months ago :eek: I was so bummed, its a ton of fun to fly.

Anyway, what I did was peel away the covering and CA'd an 1/8" or so thick lite ply spacer where the bracket mounts to get the clearance needed for the spring and help strengthen the mounting point. Then I simply screwed it to the fuselage with wood screws, no blind nuts or anything, then bent the spring up and pushed it into the bottom of the rudder. I put a drop of thin CA at that point and thats it. Easy and held up perfectly. I do recommend the stiffer spring if you fly off anything other than pavement. Good luck!

This install seems to hold up well. The old cow paster (flying field?) is pretty tough on planes. This is the tail of my 120 size. I did the 40 size the same way. I used 1/8" ply for the plate. Sorry I didn't shine it up but I spent a good part of today at the field and the heat really took its toll. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll have to seek out a Sullivan at my local hobby shop. I like the idea of adding a little support plate, which will help threefold: 1) add re-enforcement to the fuse, 2) give someplace to screw into, and 3) give a little extra functional weight to a slightly nose-heavy plane.

I used a simple DuBro free castering tailwheel on my US 40. Light and simple! The US has more than enough rudder authority!

I found that the spring from the Sullivan would have to be bent funny so that it would not interfere with the elevator so I decided against using it. The free castering really did work well...
