Hanger 9 TAYLORCRAFT
 

Looking at purchasing the Hanger 9 Giant TAYLORCRAFT 80" version. is there a version 1 and 2, what are the differences. Can someone tell me what the distance from the firewall to the prop hud is, Want to use a DLE-20. How does it fly.

Yes... version one had a one piece wing, whereas version two has wing halves.

Version 2 is I think a little lighter and there are videos of it flying quite well with a Zenoah G-20 and a DLE-20 is more powerful so you'd be fine.

I've a version 1 that has been rebuilt several times and is on the heavy side and am flying it with a Zenoah G-23, probably no more powerful or less so than the DLE-20.

Nail down which version and someone should be able to provide the measurement. When rebuilding mine, I used parts from the newer version but doing so requires a total new front end build.

Version 1 was a touch larger too, as I recall. I think an 82" or 83" wingspan.
I had one of those but was talked into selling it after they were discontinued; mine was still in the box.
Version 2 is an 80" wingspan. Mine has an OS120AX w/ 16x8 prop; I don't know how that compares w/ the DLE 20. I had to add 14.5 oz of weight to the nose to balance it, and all up weight dry is 14lbs 7oz. It flies great. It'll do any manuever I'm capable of doing and almost unlimited vertical, but I don't do 3D.
It slows down almost to a walk landing and it's a floater when you bring it in.
It's a great great airplane and if you get one you'll not regret it.

Ditto on all of the above except I used a DLE 30. Great flier, and lands like a trainer.

Thanks for all the replys, my local Hobby Shop has one coming in. My big concern is will a DLE-20 rear carb fit in the cowl without having the carb go thru the firewall.

I would hope someone can give me the dimension from the firewall to the prop hub.

There might be an online manual... IIRC there is for the older version so might also be for the newer.

I'm not sure they list it but the appropriate thrust washer measurement can be concluded by taking the measurement of a Zenoah G-20, which is 4.75" and adding the 28mm standoffs they provide when using that engine. An appropriate figure to the thrust washer from fire wall should then be right at 5.875".

I have checked the manual on line and it does not give the dimension from the firewall to prop hub. I am hoping that someone that has one can fill in the blank for me.

Ron... the 28mm standoffs are for G-20 when it is used for the Taylorcraft. That should give you the number you needed.

I have the new version of the Taylorcraft with a Zenoah 20 and in my opinion it could use more power. If you like scale flying the Z20 is the right choice. The dimension from back to prop hub for the Z20 ei 120mm so adding in the 28mm standoffs the dimesion from Hangar 9 would be 148mm. Personally I always extend this at least 6mm or so and if you use fender washers under the standoffs you should get about an additional 3mm. Hangar 9 deserves a bunch of credit for this plane they did a spectacular job.

I had planned to repower my Taylorcraft with a Zenoah 26 but, after reading mobyal comment that he has an OS 120 ax installed on his Taylorcraft, and I happen to have one and it is one of my favorite engines, that is now my engine choice.

Dang....my estimate was off by almost one sixteenth.

I'm flying the older version (at just under 16 lbs) with a G-23, which is no more powerful (perhaps less so) than the G-20 and I'd agree that it flies scale like with that power so a little more engine wouldn't hurt. From what I hear, the DLE-20 is notably stronger than the Zenoah G-20... so it is probably a good choice.
