Removing Hinged Pins?
 

I recently purchased a large scale Edge that was partly finished...the problem is the pin style hinges on all the control surfaces were installed without sinking them enough and has left a gap of at least 1/8 inch, and worse on the rudder...any ideas on how to remove and redo? This is going to be a long project....Thanks, B7

Can the gaps simply be sealed over with some covering from underneath?

If they are epoxyed in they can be removed with the application of heat. I have done this several times by using two covering irons to sandwich the hinge. The heat will make the epoxy soft enough to remove the hinge.

I have used a piece of stainless tubing just larger then the diameter of the pin. I cut some teeth on the end of the tube and use it like a saw to cut out the hinge. I make the end look sort of like a hole saw. I put the tube in a drill and the pin guides the tube so you do not take out to much material. You can then fill the hole with a plug of balsa or just get a larger pin style hinge.

What is the size of the model?

Cut the pins flush then just do new ones.

Its a 30% Edge...the rudder is the worse, I cut the hinges and drilled out the roots and I'll use some Gorilla Glue to attach new hinges, should work fine....the wings and stabs are not as bad, and they would also be very delicate to drill out....thanks, later...B7

Why are you removing the pins after you cut them, I'd leave them in.

Hey...I'm not sure I follow your question....I may not have explained myself in the last post so I edited it....I am replacing the hinges because they were installed incorrectly and left a large gap....B7

Well, they ain't going in any more, right?

Cut the pind and start from scratch with new holes you can trust. Not a big deal.

Ajet...Thanks, As soon as the hinges come in I'm going to see how its works on the ones I drilled out...but your idea of cutting them and drilling new holes to install seems like a better idea...B7
