Help..how to fly with flap
 

I need some help on the flap setting of the WM Super chipmunk....This is my first plane with a flap function....in the manual alll you need to set is the flap travel thats all...is it that all you need to take off and land.....put down the flap and take off or vice-versa...or we have to mix it with the elevator during landing or take off??????.....please somebody help me....the plane is ready and I don dare to fly it...currently i am using airtronics rd6000 ....Thank you for any reply....

you really don't need flaps to fly it as it lands super slow without them but if you do use them you do need to mix down elevator as the nose pitches up when you lower the flaps. And then you need to fly it and adjust the down elevator mix percentage as needed. I have a O.S. 91 four stroke in mine and it lands very slow.This is not true generally with this type of plane but it is extremely light which makes slow landings possible. Tim

If you'll look on the box you'll see that the "flaps" are in the reflex position, up past neutral and the elevator would be down at this point and you need to mix this function. This is done to enhance pitch control for aerobatics

Ok....so when we activate the flap it neeed to pitch up instead of down.....and we mix the amount of down elevator during flight...is that all.....about your chipmunk Tim....what do you do with the flap....just install a servo and leave it....how to lock up the flap if i don't need it....in my place which I have seen ...just glue a piece of balsa to the wing thats it....I don't like it this...way ...any other suggesstion.....

The Flaps run proportionally to the elevator but in reverse, elevator up and the flaps go down.
If you don't want to bother with it just install the "Y" push rod to the torque arms and anchor the other end.

Thanks for the reply.....I think I will fly my bird with the flap...since this is the first bird I have with flap...need some help on the setting of elevator when the flap is deployed...From my flying experience and some imagination...when the flap is down...nose will point up...mix with elevator to level or slightly...nose up for scale like landing...

The question is...how much throttle I need before I can safely deploy the flap when the mixing is being done....I don't want anything to happen to it ...and definitely I will fly it real high before I flip the switch...There is a dual rate on my radio for the flap ...should I flip to less flap first or straight to max...please help......

Using flaps
 

If you use the flaps as flaps you'll need to program in a little down elevator, just a few degrees at first to see how the plane reacts. All planes will "pitch up" (climb) when flaps are deployed and a little power is needed to bring the plane in or it will slow down too much and become very mushy.
If the flaps are on a rheostat it doesn't matter if you have too much or too little elevator at first because you can fine tune the flaps in the air to eliminate clime or dive when the flaps go down. If you feel you don't have enough flap after the first flights you can adjust the elevator accordingly to allow more flap deployment without pitch change.

You sure that your Mentor does not need Flaps? You may need it to have a shorter landing to avoid the puddles of water

My first airplane with flaps was the W.M. Giant P-51 Mustang. Only thing I would add is to not try to do a full power take off with flaps. :D I did this once and almost lost the airplane. The tail shot up well ahead of the nose and I was lucky to keep it from going in. Won't do that again............
