Stinger 2
Has any body purchased one ? If so I was wondering about getting a little info on the fuel tank area.
Thanks in advance! Andy |
RE: Stinger 2
What would you like to know? I'm reviewing it for RCU... :D
|
RE: Stinger 2
Well, I'm sure your going to enjoy it with out a doubt! :D
All my smaller stuff has been going electric. I need to know how far from the fire wal to the first support. Even if thats not long enough, how much room is ther through the support to slide a battery through. How does it look so far, and what size engine did they supply for the fun? Not trying to get ahead of review [sm=72_72.gif] but a little input is always welcome. Andy |
RE: Stinger 2
The exact dimensions, I don't know, but it's pretty open inside if you're looking for battery space. I have an O.S. .46 AX in mine, and it's PLENTY of power!
|
RE: Stinger 2
I'm thinking of a Rimfire .46 for it. I have one on my Stik but its hard to change batteries, and not much room for the ESC. I can mount the ESC in the cowl on this one and as long as there is plenty of room for a battery ? :D
What size prop and how much ground clearance do you have? |
RE: Stinger 2
I'm running a 12x6 prop and there's lots of clearance. The canopy/battery hatch comes off pretty easy with just two screws, and it's really big- lots of room for guys like me with big hands!
|
RE: Stinger 2
Nice!
I have several batteries, but I like the Rimfire .46 on a 5 cell with an 11 x 8.5E it acts allot like my K&B .48 I had. Looks like I might just have to have one! Andy |
RE: Stinger 2
Yeah. It is A LOT of fun to fly too! Wild or mild, she'll do it all. (I didn't try any 3D though the control surfaces could do it, I bet)
|
RE: Stinger 2
Ok, bit the bullet and ordered one up! LOL
Just what I needed! I'll post more when it gets in my grubby paws. Andy |
RE: Stinger 2
Ok,
I just opened the box! Very nice indeed! :D OK, now the problem, no room for the battery. [:o] I need to do a little figuring to see if I can make some room. I might be able to lower the fuel tank tray and create the space. I need to make sure it will balance pretty easy though. Andy |
RE: Stinger 2
Ok!
I think I'm past the problem!! :D Got the trusty exacto knife out and cut the fuel tank tray out. The battery now slides in under the wing tube, with room to spare for balancing. I don't think there will be any issues do to the fact I put in a 4500 mah 35C 6s lipo. If I take a little off the gear supports and glue a new tray in directly to the gear supports I should have TONS of room with out any compromise for strength. Andy. |
RE: Stinger 2
Very cool! I flew mine again last night... The wind was 10-15 mph and she handled it without any trouble at all! I love the Stinger 2- It will be going to the field on every trip I make!
|
RE: Stinger 2
Very cool! I'm glad your having a good time and can't wait for the review!
I had a Stinger, loved the way it flew but was not happy about the construction. The way the turtle deck was on the Lanier Stinger was not very strong at all. The way the canopy fit was not a good thing either do to the type of plastic they used. After time the material was warping and it was really hard to get it together and make it look nice. I also feel the the one piece wing design took away from the strength of the fuselage. On the Stinger 2 the wing tube design keeps a little more meat on the air frame with out making it to heavy. Should be fun, maybe have to post a few pics for any one else interested in electric. Andy |
RE: Stinger 2
I totally agree with you! I had the giant Stinger, and the 1-piece wing was just too big to transport to the field! Loved the plane, hated to transport it... I'm so glad that Great Planes brought this one back for us to have fun with. By the way, the O.S. .46AX will pull the Stinger 2 vertical for a very long time!
You're in for a treat when you get yours to the field! |
RE: Stinger 2
Ok,
I have not had time to put it all the way together but theres really not much thats left to do. I do need to open up the openings for the wheels just a touch. So far every thing else is looking pretty good! :D Andy |
RE: Stinger 2
I have my 1st complaint on the new Stinger. If this is my only complaint we are doing good!! LOL
Great Planes please don't pre-trim the axles!!!! I almost was not able to put the wheel pants on. The axles are so short I had to go in my washer collection and replace the nylon spacers with a couple of flat washers on each side. Even with this the collars are just barely on. Ok, looks good so far, might have it out this week! :D Time and weather permitting. Andy |
RE: Stinger 2
I'd like pics of the electric conversion. I fly all electric now and have lots of 5000MAH batts. What motor you running on 6S?? THANKS,RACJ

RE: Stinger 2
I'm running the Rimfire .46 42-60-800 on a 10x5E, I had it on my GP .40 size Stick. I could easily go to something one the lines of a 600kv motor, but I bought this one when I only had 4s and 5s Lipo's. I'm tryning to stay with one size cell pack to fly my planes instead of having three or four sizes.
I'll get some pics up when I'm done mounting the batteries. The ESC with be under the motor in the cowl, there is room to spare out there!! :D BTW the Stick fly like a rocket!! LOL I'm going to put a GPS in it to see how high its going and what type of speeds. That little dot in the air just doesn't tell me much. ;) Andy |

Ok, here's the wheel collar picks, you can see how little room was left even after not using the spacer.
A few pics also of the electric set up. Its not quite done but you get the idea. I built an extension to the battery tray in the plane the will hold the Lipo quite well. I was worried about getting the battery far enough back but don't think there is a problem. My 5000mah 6s set up will not fit the plane, just to tight. Mine is not a factory 6s, its a 2s and 4s with a y connector but don't think it makes a difference. |

Hey Guys,
I've got my new Stinger II up and flying. This airplane brings back a ton of memories for many of us. Just seeing that shape flying around takes me back to the mid 90's and the Stinger .40 I build with every cent I could make mowing lawns! Some details of my set up: OS .50 SX-H Engine w/ Bission Pitts Muffler using Powermaster 15% Power Blend Fuel 12x4 APC Prop 3152 Digital Futaba Servos 7C Futaba TX 6.0 volt 1600 Mha Nihm RX Battery Ended up weighing in at 5 lbs 3 oz with this set up. That is really light for the wing area and it is apparant in flight. Nice floater that you can get really slow or tear huge holes in the sky with. It snaps very quick and the KE flight performance is awesome. She will hover and harrier roll but you have to be carefull not to get to wild. I'm having a blast with it. Some pics of the finished airplane on the ground. |

RE: Stinger 2
Very nice! :D I just got my motor back from Hobbico and might maiden Wednesday.
|
RE: Stinger 2
Just picked up mine today!!:D It looks really good. I plan on using a YS63 on this one which I think should be enough power??
Dan |
RE: Stinger 2
Oh yeh! A YS 63 will do quite nice on this one!

RE: Stinger 2
Got the wings done tonight, nice and easy. Started to mount the stabilizer and will wait until tomorrow. I bought a 10oz fuel tank and will cut out and re-mount the fuel tank mount a little lower to make room for the larger tank. I'll be changing the stock wheels out for a set of Du Bro wheels. I just don't like foam wheels and I think I'm going to replace the stock spinner.
This plane certainly does go together fast and everything so far fits together well. I am hoping to maiden mine this coming Wednesday. Dan |
