H9 Cub 40
 

I am in the process of mounting a Saito 90 twin on a Hangar 9 40 Cub. Anybody have any tricks as to how to line it up so the thrust line is close to being where it should be?

If the crank has to be lined up with the hole in the firewall, I have problems.

The crank needs to line up with the cowl. As long as it fits on the firewall it should be ok.

that 90 should ripe the wings off very ez..........and god knows how much tail weight you will need,,,,,,,,,,,,,,40 means 40 size, they are to fly scale, never in 30 yrs of flying have i seen a cub raceing plane, but who knows you may have the frist.............

The 90 will fly that cub great! The Saito 82 is very popular for that cub. Plus the twin 90 will look very scale..some people........

The power of a 90 twin is equivalent to about a 72 maybe alittle more. The manual calls for up to an 82. I'm pretty sure the wings will not be "ripped" off. The last H9 Cub I flew had a 65 on it and I had to add quite a bit of weight to the nose. I'll bet you that I can offset the weight of the 90 with battery placement.

Made some progress. If anybody wants a cowl for this plane without the molded dummy engines, Fiberglass Specialties has them.

I had to cut it up pretty bad to get it to work, but since it's gonna be a racing cub :eek: you won't be able to see it as it flies.

I have the same plane, with the same engine. It is not grossly overpowered, and I didn't add any weight to balance it. The 90 twin isn't as powerful as one might think.....but the sound.....:D:D

Hey Handyman, balanced where it should with the battery on the CG. No tailweight added. I still need to paint the cowl and put a prop on it but unless I'm gonna use a lawn mower blade for a prop, it should be ok...:D

I have no doubt that you will be pleased with this setup. Every time I take mine out, it attracts quite a bit of attention. I had to install an onboard glow system on mine. It had a nasty habit of dropping a cylinder every once in a while. Glow system cured that problem.

The plane flew great, no where near over powered, but I only got in one flight. The engine has bearing problems and I'm in the process of repairing it.

That really looks good. I know what you mean about bearing problems. I picked up a used Saito 56 off of the auction site and the description said it was in great shape and " a nice choice for your next project ". I received it and fired it up and it ran ok but it made some strange noises. When I took it apart it looked like it had been sitting in salt water it was so rusty. I was furious and tried to contact the seller for a refund. After not hearing anything for over a week I decided to order a new set of bearings and a gasket set and fix it up. I took it completely apart and removed all of the rust, replaced the bearings and gaskets and now I have a really nice running Saito.

Thats pretty much what I went through as well. I replaced the bearings and rings and it runs great now. Very low idle.
