Rascal 110 wing struts. Functional?

Anyone else having trouble keeping the wing struts attached on their Rascal 110? I am using a Saito 1.80 for power and it shakes a little ;)

The wing struts attach with a metric (2.5mm?) socket head screw on each end (1 screws into wing and 1 srews into fuse). I have used lock washers on both screws, but they will not stay in place. I could use locktite, but that's not the best choice since I'll be disassembling the plane to tak it home at the end of the day.

Are the struts functional?

Thanks for the help.

Rascal 110 struts

Functional? Yes, they are. Here's how I fixed the same problem you have.

Tap the metric threads for 6-32. Then thread a 6-32 socket head bolt, say 1" long, from the INSIDE so the threads stick out the fuselage and wing. They will not pull out!

Put the struts in place over the 6-32 studs as you install the wing and use safety nuts to keep them secure.

You'll have to access the wing blind nuts from underside of wing, but with a little extra covering, it won't show much.

Thanks Mr. Petit. I bought the plane after reading your review in R/C report. It's a real sweatheart.

Rascal 110 wing struts. Functional?

Yep! Have lost 4 of them screws. I recently started using blue loctite, just a touch. So far seems good. I dont really want to cut into the wing yet. But may well do that if this doesnt work.

Rascal 110 wing struts. Functional?

fenderjw,
YES, the Rascal 110 wing struts are indeed functional! The use of LockTite "Blue" is not only a good idea, it is mentioned several times in the assembly manual. This material is meant for use with hardware that is removable and will not harm threads - use it!

FYI, the next run of Rascal 110 kits - and all future runs - will use U.S. 4-40 cap head bolts and 4-40 blind nuts.

Rascal 110 wing struts. Functional?

Instructions? We dont need no steenking instructions.
Famous last words.
I only have 2 arfs, the rascall110 and a twinstar. I found out the hard way you have to go over the covering to make sure its really stuck down. On the bottom edge of the wing trailing edge, where the white meets the red, it ballooned out and busted the white covering exposing the wood. Sure enough, its says in the instructions to go over the covering with an iron. Felt pretty silly. I have to admit I'm not very familiar with arfs. Sure wish they would make this a kit.
Edwin

PS- I love this plane. Can damn near thermal it.
