Help with thoughts on next Plane
 

I currently have a GP Big Stik 60 that I have used as my trainer. While I am still learning, I am also considering my next plane to build this winter.

I am interested in some type of low-wing or mid-wing sport plane. I want to be able to learn aerobatics with it, but don't want something too agressive or difficult to handle. This will be my primary plane, so I want something fun and provide all around good flying.

I have read a bit and am currently considering the following:

WM Chipmunk 90S
WM Super Sports 60
GP Shoestring
Lanier Stinger 60

Please provide your thoughts and suggestions.

I would like to stay in 60 size (with a ST 75 engine) and definately want an ARF. Some day I would like a warbird (P-47 or P-51) but I am concerned that this is not a good next step.

The WM Chipmunk is a nice plane, but in my opinion is a little hot for a second plane.

Also consider the Sig Four Star 60 ARF as it makes a great match with a ST 75 and has no bad habits. Probably one of the best sport planes ever designed.

Hi,
I have the Chipmunk 90S and I really love it. I use a OS91FX 2-stroke which provides more than enough power. Probably a 4 stroke would fit the characteristics better, but you can't always buy a new motor!
The plane has retracts. These are really a ... They bend easily and if you don't have a golf green - it's really bad. i am considering changing to fixed ones with a nice original like cover. I saw a beutiful Chipmunk in Oshkosh in the museum with fixed gear. Looks great.
The plane flies great and is not at all difficult to control. It goes through most of the manouvers without any problem. The only bad part are the retracts. You really have to level off, take out the speed and keep the tail down. The flaps really help. Often enough my Chipmunk just tips over shortly before it comes to a stop. Obviously the elevator havn't that much effect on low speed and the gear is very close to the CG. Therefore it doesn't take a lot to tip over.
Otherwise I highly recommend the plane. It looks great and low passes are great. Get it, you will enjoy it.

The World Models Super Chipmunk can be bought with or without retracts for the same price. World Models doesn't list it on their website for some reason but many of the websites that sell them have them in the 2 flavors - with retracts and with standard fixed gear.

Look at Quantummodels.com under World models - they have the Super Chipmunk for the same price with retracts or fixed gear version.

The SIG 4 star 60 is the best mentioned so far-

The Chipmunk IS a great flying airplane but not for your 2nd ;)

After the 4* a warbird would be fitting!

I think the Dazzler 40 ARF or kit is just what you are looking for. Its a midwinged easy to fly aerobatic model. The ARF even comes with engine mount installed, spinner, prebent langing gear, wheels, fuel tank, etc. Its a great aerobatic trainer, but its not too agressive. I flew mine without dual rates to help me. And I loved it.
