Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
I can't seem to find a thread for these yet, and I would love to hear from some other select scale Cub pilots. I've had mine about 2 weeks and love it. I fly mine with a Flysky TH9X. Only gripe so far is that the alerons were sitting a little high, but that was easy to remedy. I also changed the planes plug to a Deans plug so I could get my batts on Ebay for $11.40 shipped. I have 4 batts for it now and im having a blast with it.
I lost the foam spinner, and found a set of 10 Cox .010 rubber spinners to silicone on for under 6 bucks shipped. Life is good. Dennis |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
How about we make this the "official" thread. I posted long ago that it was hard to find and keep track of specific planes and it is nice when a thread is full of info.
I have the 48 inch Piper (made by ST models) and I like it real well. I've had mine for around 6-8 months and don't fly it very often any more. It flies nicely with a 8x6 prop and I use a 9x radio too. I use a 3sx2.1 pack in mine for longer flight times. Mines kinda rough cuz I bought it used. |

Hey, if it's rough, it just needs bigger wheels and flaps, then it's a bush plane.
Im diggin this electric stuff. I used to have 5 planes with Saito's, and a $40.00 a week nitro habit. Im free ! Now I have 4 electric planes, and 1/4 scale gasoline powered Balsa USA EAA Biplane that runs on penny's. I also have 2 electric heli's. No more nitro for me. |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
Im still using the stock 8x4 on my Cub. I saw a video where they liked a 8x6 better, but I can't imagine why. That would just lug the motor down more and use more battery. These particular Cubs are proped fine from the factory in my opinion.

RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
Mine has no wheel pants and bigger wheels. It actually doesn't look too bad. Stil likes to nose over in my back grass. I think I'll fly it today. :D I have 2 planes to maiden today if it's nice.

RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
I have 2 Flyzone planes, the Cessna 182 SkyLane Select Scale and their Focke-Wulf FW 190; both are beautiful planes. If they are any idication of quality, your Cub must be really nice. I have a friend that has one painted yellow. It is a great flying plane and sounds scale when flying over you. Flyzone makes some pretty good products. I just wish my LHS would carry parts! Enjoy.

RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
Im going to go to bigger wheels also. Yes, grass is hard to deal with when you have small wheels.
Wheel pants just get messed up and get in the way in my case. Just got back from flyin a few minutes ago. I flew 4 packs with the Cub, but didn't record any of it. I did make some video's of my friend flying his 1/4 scale, 26cc, Great Planes P6 Hawk. I still need to upload them so it will be a while, in case you want to see them. My You Tube username is "n6ugyham". They should be up within the hour, unless the camera screwed up again. Some of the recent video's have had some weird clouds of color going on, so we'll see... |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
The landing gear on the Select Scale Cub is amazing. I've had some funny landings that moved the suspension a good inch.
I wish they had used two servo's for the alerons so we could use flaperons. I thought the horizontal stabilizer was a bit flimsey, so I added support rods underneath. They really tightened things up. I also added a rubber band around the fuse and the rear tab of the wing to hold the rear of the wing down against the fuse. I need two more batterys, 4 isn't enough. Im thinkin 6 would be about right. lol |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
I think you need a "faster" charger. ;) Mine flew fine yesterday for 13 minutes with the best landing I've ever done on it. It's got to be the bigger wheels on the grass. My landing gear is almost always bent. My RX came loose , but have reglued it and is ready to go again.

RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
I have a Triton charger, but havn't charged at the site yet. We get there at about 7:30am and fly till about 9:30 or 10am, and get out of there before our hair catches fire.
I charge the Cubs batts at 1 amp, and it takes about an hour for each pack to charge. I tied my UMX Beast down and it ran for 15 minutes just below full throttle. I will do that with the Cub today, and see what it can do. I had no clue, so I was just sneeking up on more and more time slowly to find out. 13 minutes is very good. |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
This is my first Flyzone plane, and im very impressed. Considering from the fact that it's very light, it does quite well in the wind.
Since im just getting back into the hobby after a 6 year break, I think this Cub is the perfect plane to get my thumbs back with. I want the Carbon Cub SS and optional floats next, but I may try the Flyzone Cessna after that. I love this electric stuff. |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
I tied mine down and ran it just beloe full throttle, and it started losing power at 8 minutes. It fizzeled out at 9 minutes and 45 seconds.
I was not moving the sticks during the test, I figured the extra load of being restrained would be enough. Dennis |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
Final run time test was in the air, and it got just over 13 minutes just doing mainly slow flight and landings.
I rechecked the CG and it was slightly nose heavy, so I removed one of the weights up front. Havn't test flown yet, maybe tonight. |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
I think I have my battery pushed all way forward and ALL those weights are removed. Where do you have your RX mounted? Mines up high in the cabin up on the rear deck. It can be seen thru the window. ;)

RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
My receiver is wedged in the foam and sticking up into the cockpit. It's rather large Flysky 8 channel unit. I should have used a smaller one, but thats what I had at the time.Just got back from the flying site a while ago, it flies better and lands nicer without the weight. Maybe I should try it with no extra weight. I shove my batts all the way forward too. My CG seems perfect with the 2 weights remaining.

RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
I've been flying the heck out of this Cub, and the only thing I can say is that it flys like a Cub. The roll rate is very slow, the alerons simply don't move enough to do a roll. I could remove some foam around the hinges so they could move more, but I like the fact it flys so scale, so im leaving it alone.
This electric stuff is new to me, but im really enjoying it. Ya just need a bucket full of batterys and a couple of feild chargers to keep going. I can get 10 minutes out of it running around 60% throttle and landing alot. Landing is my favorite part of this hobby, and the Select Scale Super Cub is a blast to land. If landing is your passion, you'll love this Cub. Once ya get used to it, you can land it almost anywhere. Im looking forward to removing the wheel pants and installing larger wheels so I can fly off dirt roads etc... I may even add flaps later. |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
Well, I agree with you. Mine doesn't spend a lot of time inverted. Loops are fun though. I wish I was a better lander and had a better landing area. I don't like landings at all. Yesterdays flight was a good landing , but resulted in a nose-over right at the very end of it (right before it stopped)
I have cubs in 1' , 2' , 3' , and 4' and this 4' is my favorite one. |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
Sounds like your landing on grass, or dirt and hit a small rock. Thats hard to do without big wheels.
Yeah, they do great loops, no problem there, but the alerons don't have much physical travel stock. Under the cowl, there's 2 weights on one side, and one on the other. Remove the top weight on the one side, and see if it doesn't land better, mine sure does. Also, set your throttle trim up a little for an idle, that may help too, unless your short on runway length. I use the throttle cut switch on my Flysky TH9X to start and stop the motor. Works great and looks cool too. I like about a 5 to 10 mph wind for landing, otherwise we need a long pretty runway eh. lol |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
Yea, I do land on my back yard which I try to keep cut short. I can only land one way so many times it is with the wind instead of against the wind. There's never any "taxiing" on my "runway"
Would you be interested in participating in my "official" 9x stock firmware programming thread? http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11...m.htm#11150535 that went "stale" because of inactivity. [>:] I would appreciate knowing how to set up and use that throttle cut switch. This cub and many of my other planes are simply "active" when the battery is plugged in and I have no safety built in. I would like to program the same switch for all of them. Thanks for the tips. |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
Just go into the settings and open throttle cut. It will be inhibited, so you need to activate it. Once you activate it, it should work properly without any other settings. It's the top left, furthest back switch. Pulling towards you will stop the motor. When you power up the plane, if your using an idle at bottom stick, and the throttle cut switch is on, you need to shut it off, turn it on, and turn it off again before the motor will run. Easy to get used to, but might trick you a few times at first.

RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
Mine almost caught on fire today. I have always hand-launched it and today I decided to see if it would take off on the grass with the bigger wheels. It went about 6 feet and nosed over. I think I cut the throttle quickly , but heard a bad humming anyways. When I got to it it was already smoking big time out the front cowl. I flipped it over and removed the battery hatch to find some nice pretty orange and red smoke coming from the lipo I thought. After I unplugged it I had a hard time removing it because I have it stuffed all the way forward and it wedges pretty good. Anyways I got it out and sen that it was the esc that was hot and put a mark on the battery , but I don;t think the battery is hurt any. The esc melted the foam I guess. I thought it was the motor smoking at first.
I just got done replacing the esc with a supertigre 20 amp that I had and it spons the motor just fine. I had to glue the rudder hinge , I must've flipped it over very fast onto the rudder. When it dries I'll give it a go with same battery and motor and prop , but new esc. Maybe tomorrow. I just couldn't bare to retire it yet. It's getting pretty beat up. It was used $51 when I bought it. |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
Thats a royal bummer. I hope it's going to be ok.
Mine has been doing good so far. I did see a You Tube video where a guys Select Scale Super Cub burned up. I think he said it was the ESC also. Now im getting a little worried... What batterys are you using in yours ? Im using some 1300's I get from Hobbycool on ebay for about 15 bucks shipped each. I have 6 of them now. I don't think i've ever even seen the ESC in mine. I better find it and start feeling it for heat occassionally. Maybe we should install 30 amp ESC's in them. Sounds like the stock 18 amp ESC's are too wimpy. I take off at full throttle, but then I throttle back to about 1/2 to 3/4, and then only go wide open once in a while, and then only for short periods. Ya know, if the ESC's are getting hot, their robbing us of runtime and power. 30A ESC time... |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
By the way, I received those 10 little spinners I ordered, and they will work, but their very tiny. They slip over the motor shaft and stay put, but their way to small. When I posted that link, I had ordered them but not received them yet. The hunt goes on...
I have a great spinner on mine now. It came off another motor a friend gave me, and it fits perfect. We just don't know what it came off of. |
RE: Flyzone Select Scale Super Cub
Mine will be back in the air in a few days. I had forgotten where the esc even was and I don't even know if I'm the one who put it there.
I use a very old used 3sx2100 Flyzone pack that was puffed when I got it. |
