Setting the control throw and gap
Hello all,
When setting the control surface throw, is it best to set it to the manufacturers specs and reduce the gap between the control surface and aileron, rudder etc (for flutter possibility)or set for full deflection and have more of a gap between the the control surface and fixed surfaces? Thanks, Pat |
RE: Setting the control throw and gap
I do a dry fit and find a compromise, but lean toward reducing the gap more than getting as much throw. |
RE: Setting the control throw and gap
Smallest gap possible and still maintaining full movement.

Ensuring that you have a good sharp bevel at the edge of the control surfaces at the hinge line helps big time.

Set the throw to what you will want. If there is any gap at all seal the gap with covering material.

RE: Setting the control throw and gap
ORIGINAL: tacx Smallest gap possible and still maintaining full movement. Then, as another modeler suggested, seal the gap, but I would add, only if the plane is 60 size or larger, or if it is smaller but very fast. A smaller 3D plane will possibly benefit from sealed gaps as well. If electric, Scotch tape will do nicely, if nitro or gas, use clear or color matching covering and a trim iron. Both Monocote and Ultracote come in clear. Always be sure to give the surface full deflection when applying the seal to the gap so as not to cause restriction. With properly installed hinges, and sealed gaps, flutter or hinge failure is almost never the cause of the accident.:D |
RE: Setting the control throw and gap
Thanks for all the inputs. for the next build I'll go full deflection, but for now ( I should of have posted this earlier) what I did was go with the manufacturers specs and kept the tightest gap. The (really small). With the manufacturers spec I have free movement. Does this sound correct? ailerons (3/8"), elevator (1/2") and rudder (1") this would be for a Extra 300 .46 size 58" wingspan. Would these measurements give full flight ability for the plane?
Thanks, Pat |
RE: Setting the control throw and gap
Pat, unless you know better, suggest you set the throws per the manual, then go fly it. With that experience under your belt, adjust to suit your ability/desires. You'll know exactly what needs to be done at that point? Going with something you get here would be a gamble at best....

Thank you Ahicks, advice well taken.
