U-CAN-DO 3D or Funtana?
I have a YS .63FZ the needs a home. As I want a good 3D machine/kick around plane I am looking at these ARFs. I think the Funtana looks better, but can it out fly the U-CAN-DO 3D? I think the U-CAN-DO 3D is about the ugliest flying machine ever built, but I've seen them fly and they seem to fly very well...

RE: U-CAN-DO 3D or Funtana?
I have the Funtana and have flown 2 UCD's quite a bit (taught a friend how to fly with one earlier this season). Depends on what you want, they both have their strongpoints...
Funtana is much more advanced, capable of almost anything you can throw at it and looks great doing it. Mine hovers great, tail touches are no problem, harriers, walls, elevators, parachutes, does a nice inverted flat spin, VIOLENT blenders, knife edges but not great, does any rolling manuever great and is all around a wonderful plane, I love mine. UCD is easier to land, more stable in wind, could use more aileron area compared to the Funtana, knife edges but couples terribly at high rudder input, hovers easy, does rolling harriers easier than the Funtana (Funtana does it too, but UCD is easier), tuff to get a "flat" inverted flat spin, an absolute joy to fly though... on low rates is gentle and at low speeds is as gentle and easy as any trainer, a bit more forgiving than the Funtana. They are both excellent planes indeed, the Funtana is more of a "hardcore" 3D aerobat for those who are already 3D capable... wild and crowd pleasing in every sense, less forgiving but much quicker movements (smaller of the two) and looks better while doing most things. The UCD is probably a better choice of you're just starting 3D and want a bigger, more stable, easier to recover plane that is very easy to fly and forgiving while in the "learning curve". Also, the UCD .60 is a bit big for your .63 as far as hovering and wild 3D goes, the UCD's Ive flown are the .60 sized ones by the way, dont know if you're refering to the .60 or .46 UCD, I havent flown a .46 sized one. Hope this helps some!! |

RE: U-CAN-DO 3D or Funtana?
I have seen a Funtana go with a Saito 72 and it did not have strong vertical performance. Not sure how much power the YS 63 creates compared with the Saito but power wise it might be better matched to the small UCD or a profile plane.

RE: U-CAN-DO 3D or Funtana?
Thanks for the replies... I was thinking of the 40 sized UCD...
Ryan, The YS is about the same power as the Saito, maybe a touch more, but not that much more... I am leaning toward the Funtana... |
RE: U-CAN-DO 3D or Funtana?
If you go with the Funtana, be sure to use spoilerons. I saw two of them go in Vegas last weekend and the one running spoilerons was much more stable during Harrier flight. The one with a Saito 72 and no spoilerons had a fair amount of wing rock.

RE: U-CAN-DO 3D or Funtana?
My Funtana has a Saito .72 in it with a wood Zinger 14x4 (wood is lighter and better throttle response than APC 14x4) running 30% Cool Power Heli fuel... hovers at 1/2 throttle and pulls out decent, not a rocket but plenty for 3D, not a 100 but sufficient. If I were to do it all over again I would go with a Saito .91 (2oz lighter than 100 and very little power difference). I am at 1107ft elevation for informational purposes too. My plane weighs 5lbs 8oz RTF (empty tank).

RE: U-CAN-DO 3D or Funtana?
If I were to do it all over again I would go with a Saito .91 (2oz lighter than 100 and very little power difference). You are mistaken. The performance of the 100 over the 91 is staggering. I own 2 91's and 2 100's The 100 comes in at 550 grams, the 91 at 520, that is only 1 oz. The difference in static thrust on a 100 vs 91 is near 2 lbs!!!! The 100 also will turn a 16" prop, put a 16" on a 91 and you will lose throttle response. if you are worried about the extra oz use CF gear ! |
RE: U-CAN-DO 3D or Funtana?
if you are worried about the extra oz use CF gear and save 5 oz! I just weighed my stock aluminum landing gear and it ways 2.7oz without wheels or axles, the carbon fiber gear upgrade is good for about an ounce at best. The aluminum gear, wheel pants, axles and tires weigh around 6oz so... you would have to remove the landing system all together to save the 5... I have the Fiber-Lite gear, the shorter of the two CF gear options is a miniscule amount lighter I'm sure, but I would rather have the prop to ground clearance for my 14 inch prop. |

RE: U-CAN-DO 3D or Funtana?
LOL
that's funny. A simple typo, I meant "if your are worried about the extra 1 oz use cf gear and save the 1 oz" I did correct the post for you two tho! just get a 100 and love it |
RE: U-CAN-DO 3D or Funtana?
In case anyone is interested I got a UC3D 40... I got a great deal on one in the bones. It can from Tower's scratch and dent section with some minor damage. Most of the covering was stripped off and the damage was all repaired. I am thinking of put my MDS .58 with an APC 13X4w prop. I have the YS 63, but I think I'll ask Santa for the Funtana for Christmas. I just might be able to compare these planes side by side... :D
