Advance 40
Hi All, I just got a used Advanced 40 and was wondering if any one knows what the recommended control throws are ?
Thanks Jim |
RE: Advance 40
Well, I thought I had you covered on this one but, I have misplaced my assembly manual. I don't remember what the throws are supposed to be but, max out the ailerons and it's still slow to roll. Maxed out rudder and it does a fantastic hammerhead! I slowly reduced the elevator throw 'till it wouldn't snap out in a tight loop. Set up like this, (a little backyardish I know) it still flew very smoothly and not at all over controlled. The balance point, if I remember right was at 3-3/8 inches from the LE. It was very close (1/4") to the main gear slots in the wings. The plane would sit on it's mains and the tail without fuel in it. I did convert mine to a taildragger and it did fine that way too. I've powered mine with an OS FS52S2 and an OS 46FX and a Mac's pipe. The FS52 with an APC 12-7 prop gave the best all around performance.
A very smooth plane. One of my favorites. Mine's in the hangar for repairs after I broke the tail trying to step over it at the field one day.[X(][:o] This plane has a bolt on tailplane. I never had a problem but, I've heard of the tailfeathers coming off in flight. I will be epoxying mine after repairs. Good luck! Enjoy! |
RE: Advance 40
I, too, am flying an old advance. I agree on the control throws as above, not much control surface, pretty tough to get in trouble even when maxed out. If in doubt, load in some expo on your radio to smooth things out. I did a search here when I was setting mine up and CG was reported as 4-3/8 from LE, which is where I am flying mine.

4-3/8" is right. I looked at mine this morning. Still can't find my book though, anybody seen it??
Dave, the memory is the 2nd thing to go.... |
RE: Advance 40
Thanks for all of the advice. Looks like everything is read to go. I'm off to the flying field this morning.
Thanks Again Jim |
