Prop on Avistar
 

Well, my Avistar is no longer a clumsy and strange looking r/c car... it flew last weekend and flew great. One of the first things the guy who flew it did was tell me to ditch the wood prop for a nylon one. I was thinking along those lines myself, as every time I've tried to start the engine (I'm cheap- use a chicken stick) with the stock spinner installed and using a wood prop, the prop nut comes loose. No such problems with the nylon prop. The only reason I was sticking with the wood one in the first place is the guy at the hobby shop called it "your engine saver", but I pancaked my Kadet in a few times with a nylon prop and the engine was fine.... so I guess it's nylon for me from now on out Anybody want any 10x6 wood props, slightly used?

I've been flying my Avistar now for about 9 months. It's the best all around plane I own and by far my favorite Sunday flier. People have a hard time believing that a trainer can fly outside manuvers that well. It started out with a 10 year old crusty Royal .40 in it which flew like the devil with a nylon 10-6 master airscrew. Then after getting hooked on 4 strokes, I stuck a .52 Magnum with a 11-10 master airscrew and the thing climbs like gravity doesn't exist. I've never had any problems with prop nuts loosening up on wooden or nylon props...even with torquey 4-strokes. I too had the same problem even with a nylon prop and had attributed it to the plastic backplate on the spinner. I launched the spinner, went to a conical prop nut (DuBro-like), turned the rubber-dealie on the end of my starter around as appropriate, and have had absolutely no problems since.

I have been using a 10 x 6 Master Airscrew on my Avistar (on a TT .46 Pro) and am going to try out an APC prop for the heck of it. I am also going to try out other sizes, too, over time, such as 10 X 7, 11 x 5, etc.

BTW, cool trick I discovered when balancing my MAS props, instead of sanding down one end to balance, paint a nice, white visibility stripe at the last 1/2" on each side of each end (I use good ol' Testors model paint). Adding an extra few strokes on the light side will create enough weight to balance it out (really works!) and create a nice safety feature. You can see the end of the spinning black prop that is otherwise almost invisible.

i too have an avistar, and love it i might add it's such a solid aircraft i have had it for two months now after flying helis i wanted something i could relax with.... i use apc nylon 10x6 props and recently got a 10x7 but havent used it yet. also currently removing the dowls to hold the wings and converting it to nylon bolts. i had a little problem with the wing seperating in flight....i guess 10 rubber bands weren't enough even with the last 4 crossed. minor damage to the fuse, as i had to pull it out of the four inch deep divot it made in the field. nobody hurt which is good. 30 minutes of cleaning and glueing and back in the air like it never happened. great plane. another guy at out field just got one since he liked the way mine flew..... it has since then been labeled as the rc lawn jart...lol
