RE: Sig extra 300SX
I had several complaints.
The wheels are far to soft and light, and will either dent or fall apart shortly after flight. The plastic piece that you are asked to tape down over the tail while the glue is drying will peel paint off the plastic and look like crap. The hinges are just a pain in the arse to get assembled and mounted properly My covering was EXTREMELY wrinkled. I was able to get it mostly cleaned up, but it took ALOT of work. The holes for the wing dowels had to be opened up for the wing to sit in the saddle. Once the wing was able to fit, the oversizing of the holes made the wing a bit wobbly. I had to add wing saddle tape to get a good seal. This seems like a lot of complaints, but I have been happy with how it flies. I just wished I went with more engine than an O.S. 1.60fx, just not the vertical I was looking for. |
RE: Sig extra 300SX
The glass work on the cowl and the wheel pants is excellent. The plastic fairing can be reordered if you arent satified with it. I ALWAYS use Robart hinges. Try a bigger engine that a 1.6 four stroke. I use a Super Tigre 3000 and have plenty of vertical. As far the tires go, yea they are too soft for pavement, but you dont need a college education to figure out that if you store it without any weight on the tires, they wont develope a flat spot. I changed the tires to sullivans ultra lites. Very good flying machine. Will knife- edge for ever.

RE: Sig extra 300SX
My 1.6 is a two stroke, not a four stroke.
I just commented on what came in the package, not the extra dollars you need to spend to make it correct. DN |
RE: Sig extra 300SX
You will like the plane with the right engine, flies great. Mine had a Saito 180 and not much vertical but I loved the way it flew. RIP

RE: Sig extra 300SX
Now you guys have me worried. Just started to build my extra 300xs, have a new OS 1.6 for it. Not enough power??? The kit manual specs at most a Irvine 1.5 which has less power than the OS 1.6.

I had (RIP) one of the earlier kits and changed out some of the hardware and used different hinges also(Klett 1/4scale) and used a different tank. The Saito 180 is a good match for doing what an Extra is designed to do and then some. I had a lot of fun and it was one of the easiest planes I have ever had to get really comfortable with. I can't really explain it..it was like I had been flying it for a long time. I will get me another one as soon as I go back to work at the LHS.
It was just one of those planes that sticks in your mind as a plane that you really enjoy flying. Damn..I think I am tearing up again...[:o] R.I.P. old gal... |
RE: Sig extra 300SX
Great plane among all the 300's offered. Slower to tip stall than it's sister the Cap.
Any of the 180 class motors are perfect as stated above -- Moki 1.8, ST 3000 or Saito. Might even try 36 - 2000 mah cells and bring it to our spring all electric fly in Lawrence. |
RE: Sig extra 300SX
Love mine.. has and OS 1.6fx in it. 18x6 prop seems to have decent vertical, but not unlimited :( . So far, it's my fav plane to fly. No bad habits at all. I read about the center section being weak, so I took carbon fibre woven cloth and took 6 " of covering out of the center section, and laminated the cloth over the section.. No problems at all now :) Great flyer. Mine hangs on the prop at almost full throttle.

If you go with gas, pin the firewall to the fuse sides.

RE: Sig extra 300SX
For gas, they spec a 2.4 (40cc). I have the Extra and the Cap and love'em both. The Cap has a ST 2500 (perry carb) with a Mezjlik 18X8 (unlimited vertical) and the Extra has a ST 2000 (perry carb also) with an APC 16X8. I would not hesitate to buy either one again!

RE: Sig extra 300SX
Glassing the center section of a plane this size IS A MUST. Should be SOP to do this on any ARF if possible.
With most kits, you still have to throw away bad wood and buy better. so buying better hinges, tires, to me is no big deal. I have maybe 100 flites on my first one, and the second is hanging above my head in the computer room , waiting for its turn. At least Sig made an effort to supply decent hinges. But Robarts are still the way to go, for performance and scale appearances. |

I really really liked my[link=http://www.devino.org/mark/airplanepics/300xs.htm]300XS[/link]. I bought it from a guy here on RCU and it was a super smoooooth flyer from the moment I set it up. My engine was a MOKI 1.8, perfect power.
I still have the 1.8. The plane went in during some over agressive flying. I have some [link=http://www.devino.org/mark/airplanepics/300xs.htm]notes out on my personal website[/link]. |

I have recently bought a new 300sx with a new fpe 2.4. It is brand new and has never been flown . It is my first large gas plane. I have no exp. with gas engines. I have some questions regarding set up. Does any one have info on which True Turn spinner to use w/ pro Zinger 20-10? How about the Miracle y servo reverser, is that necessary, I will be using a Futaba 8UAP could i just slave one of the channels and reverse it? Has any body installed a smoke system. I have the TME Simple smoke too heavy? Tank placement? gas and smoke fuel. How are you operating the choke on the engine, via a servo or manually? I am going to use Hitec 605bb on the elevators old Futaba 9203 coreless servos on the ailerons and a Hitec 645mg on the rudder any thoughts? Your comments and thoughts will be greatly appreciated |
