Deadstick in an Extra 300
Whats the best way to transition out of a split S into a dead stick approach after your engine quits on your downwind leg with a 90 size Extra 300L ?

hi
keep nose down and continue in straight flight, avoid turns you lose lift in a turn. better to try a straight ahead landing. again keep nose down to maintain flying speed. some of these are not good in glide mode, most require some power on landing. good luck joe |

Depending on your height, convert any extra airspeed into extra height (if you need to)! Then concerntrate on your approach. If the wind is strong or your altitude is low, use a short approach. If you have lots of altitude or the wind is weak and airspeed is high use a longer approach to wash of any extra speed. Also be aware of any obsticles you may need to clear, such as fences or long grass (or arrester grass as I like to call it). Just remember that you can't go around with no power! So make sure you get it right.

Unless you have lots of excess altitude, the best thing by far is to just land straight ahead. Don't try to turn or maneuver, just land. If you got lots of altitude, you can play a little bit but only as required to find a suitable landing spot. No funny stuff, no tricks, no messing around, land straight ahead.

If u do need to turn w/ a deadstick, keep the bank angles as shalow as possible and make use of your rudder with the turn, this way you do not lose too much of your verticle lift component.

If you're high enough, you could point it down to gain speed and turn slowly into the wind. If your too low, go straight and bleed off altitude if the area is clear. Most of the time you can pull it off.
I dread the day I'm too high and down wind and my engine quits. Good luck finding it even if it's in one piece. [:o] In this case I would turn it into the wind and just bleed off altitude and try to get as close to the field as possible. The guy that said be careful with obstacles, how true, as I found this out first hand. Leave way more space than you think you need if possible (I forgot to extend antenna, lost control for 5 seconds, dead sticked, extended antenna real quick, regained control surfaces and almost made it over the top of a tree..min wing damage).
