GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

Hello,
How are you mounting your 91 four strokes in the stuka from Great planes? The directions show a side mounted 2 stroke with the muffler in the bottom of the cowl. How should I mount the four stroke? Should I still mount on its side but flipped 180 degrees so that it faces the opposite side? That way the pipe will still exit downward.

I'll second that question and add another: What is the measurement from the CG to the back of the spinner? Thanks.

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

I am seriously considering this plane but it appears no one really has one to talk about on this forum. There is very little technical and flight info when I searched for it here.

I would love to have a 4 stroke in it as well if I get it but cant seem to find any answers. [:@]

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

I checked out the manual online and it says it is for a 61 2 stroke or 91 four stroke, but the directions don't tell how the four stroke should be mounted.

It seems the 61 2 stroke is perfect for it based on the way the directions show it mounted. The pipe fits into the bottom of the cowl, right at the intake. I suppose i could put a 61 2 stroke in it, but I would prefer the 4 stroke if anyone can help out here.

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

Not sure what you're refering to with the 180 rotation. Most 4 stroke have the exhaust coming out on the same side as 2strokes, so you can mount the 4stroke either sideways or down 45deg similar to the 2stroke install shown in the manual. Then, the 4stroke exhaust pipe should point roughly downward, no?

I have a GP Stuka but it's NIB unstarted, so I don't know first hand. I plan on using a 2stroke, but if I were to use a 4stroke, I would probably try to mount it similar to the way shown in the manual to try to hide as much of the engine as I can.

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

I guess you are right. I don't know what I was thinking for a minute there-- I guess the exhaust does come out on the same side of 4 versus 2 stroke.

Anyways, the same question still stands, should I mount on its side and have the exhaust come straight out of the bottom or what? I was looking for someone who owns one with a four stroke in it to give me some first hand advice. Pics would be nice too. Anyone???

Mount it on its side, exhaust out the bottom.

I have the Stuka sitting in a box too. Wanted a War Bird but didn't want the retract problems... I have a .61 2 stroke just sitting here but was planing on putting a 4 stroke 91 in it. Love the sound and feel of the 4 strokes... Keep us informed on the process...

I just ordered one ......I have a RCV 90 SP that I just broke in to put in it. I hope that this will be be a good combination.

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

That RCV engine should be cool in there. I wonder if the whole engine will fit without even cutting the cowl. I think I have decided to go with a saito 91 in mine. I plan on ordering the plane today. I will post pics as I progress.

The RCV 90 / Stuka should be a great combination, I know of one person that has the same setup in my area, and from what I understand he is very happy with it.

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

Thanks, glad to hear that! I downloaded the manual from GP and checking out the engine indstallation page it indicates the firewall to the end of the cowl is 4 3/4 inches which is the same amount as the RCV from the backplate to the prop washer. So it looks like it should fit ok. I am planning to re-enforce the firewall because of the high torque of the engine. I'm also planning to install a 15.75x 13 3 bladed prop.

I'll post pictures as I go.

Great planes Stuka Engine Mounting?

Hers how I mounted the OS Max .91 4 stroke pumper engine in mine!;)

I mounted the engine inverted for increased scale effect.
To do this you will need an OS Max exhaust manifold for your
engine I ordered OS Max part #72109500 for the FS70/FS-91
for $24.99 this allows you to move the outlet towards the rear
and then I used the stock muffler tube screwed into the 90
degree manifold to angle the muffler down. It's a little tricky
to tighten up as you must do it with the cowl unfastened to
avoid cracking it and to allow more room for the 14mm wrench.
I hope these picture help[8D]

Stuka Engine Mounting More Pictures

I don't think the thread sizes are the same for the Saito .91?
You can see how I mounted the Saito .91 in my Hanger9 P51
in the background in the third picture. Not scale but easy and
functional. Performance Specialities make adaptors and elbows
for various 4 strokes so they may be able to help with your Saito
.91 install or you could make a custom exhaust manifold. Here is
a picture of the side view and a top view of the manifold I used.
Good Luck and Happy Dive Bombing!!!!!!!!!:D

Thanks for the great info and pics. My stuka comes today via fed ex. I can't wait.

warbirdbutty: Where did you get that swastika decal on the tail. I want to put one on mine too.

Swastika Decal on Stuka Tail!!!!!!!

I purchased a set of Major Decals from Tower for $9.29
Part #MAJQ2085 WW2 German .40-.60 size

Some people think that it is not "Politically Correct"
to put a Swastika on a model R/C airplane. You no
what I say to them "F*** EM
It's my damn airplane and I'll do what I want to and
nobody is going to tell me what decals or what color
to paint it. It's my airplane not yours and if don't like
it don't look at it!! I think people who want to hide or
denies what happened are stupid and are only setting
themselves up for a potential repeat of history. [>:]

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

DFWS: I agree, I think you should be able to decorate the plane as authentic as you want. I checked out that decal set from major decals, but that swastika is pretty small. I was looking for a larger one.

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

I would love to see more pics of your guys planes. The JU-87 is an interesting plane and I want one so I dont have to be like the other 456,871 Mustangs at my field.

ON a side note I agree that its ok to dress the plane to look authentic, thats the whole purpose of Warbirds is to replicate as best we can the fighters of the past. Either American or otherwise. I dont see anyone having a hissy fit when someone flies a beutifully modeled Zero. Just a thought and keep up the good work!!

MORE PICS OF THE PLANES PLEASE!!!

:D

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

I just got my Stuka ARF delivered on my porch yesterday. Opened up the package to check it out. Everything is very well packed. The covering is extremely wrinkled- looks a little bit like Ray Charles put it on with all the wrinkles. This might be due to the extreme cold we have- it was sitting on my porch all day when the temperature was minus 10 degrees. I am going to iron it out smooth today.

The cowling has a few small cracks in it too. One 2 minute phone call to tower hobbies corrected that- they are sending a replacement cowling right away.

All in all, the kit looks pretty nice and I think it will be a great plane. I will take some pictures as I build it over the next week or so. I might start a new thread showing the build.

Haven't decided which engine to use. Possibly a tower .75 2 stroke but most likely I will be going with a four stroke. Can't decide if I want to go budget (thunder tiger 90) or go high quality (saito 91). There isn't much of a price difference (around $40), so i might go with the saito.

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

DFWS, very nicely done engine install. I agree that detailing out a Ju-87 with authentic marking is perfectly okay. Some folks just take this PC thing to an obsurd extreme. I think it's unfortunate that Great Planes feels the need to "delete" the Swastika from the Decal sheet. Putting a Swastika decal on a model airplane is a far cry from tatooing a Swastika on one's shaved head.

I would love to put a .91 4stroke in mine, but I already have several .75 2strokes on the shelf, so I will use one of them. The Stuka has that big old jaw that even the largest 2stroke muffler will fit in it no problem.

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

Volfy, how did the covering job look on your kit? Any wrinkles? Mine is pretty badly wrinkled.

Volfy 01-20-2004 12:38 PM

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

I have had 3 of these GP Stuka ARF at one time and they were all excellent. I sold two of them and am definitely keeping the last one for myself. None of them had the minor wrinkling and bubbles I typically see with most other ARFs. I don't know if the flat finish has anything to do with it. I think mostly it's because I live here in the Gulf coast. Down here it's as hot and humid as Southeast Asia where these ARFs are made, so the balsa doesn't dry and shrivel up like many other parts of the Continental US.

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

Tried getting a set of swastika decals made for the tail of the stuka today. THe Major Decals ones are too small. THe local sign shop refused to make them for me. They said it was too sensitive of a subject and they were worried someone might get offended. If you ask me, that's a load of S$#@ !. Its too bad that people can't even get authentic markings on a model plane. Its not like I was asking them to make me a sign praising Hitler or anything. I even brought in my manual and the piece of tail so that he would know I was using it on a model. Oh well, I guess I will have to cut my own.

RE: GP JU-87 Stuka engine question

This is an old Forum, but I hope I get some replys. I have the GP Stuka built and have an OS 91 2 stroke mounted on it. It's the same sz as the 61 2 stroke. Everything fits perfect. I have not cut the cowl yet. I just purchased a GP Shoestring. Which has a 91 Saito fs on it. In my mind I'm thinking the OS 91 2 stroke would be better matched to the Shoestring which is a pylon racer and the Saito 4 stroke 91 would be better on the Warbird Stuka. Is it worth the time it will take to change the throttle linkage and changing motor mounts? You guys fly these birds... What do you think? I'm dying to fly the stuka and I would have to wait for a bit the stuka to come.
