Sig Sukhoi SU31???
 

What is the story on the big Sig ARF. A search of these forums has turned up very little info on this bird. I am interested in buying one in the future but I have been unable to find anyone that has much to say about it. Is it a good quality, good performer/handling etc.? Do any of you guys have experience with this airplane?

Hi John,

I have one that I have not yet assembled. I bought it about a year ago. At the time there was a thread that dealt with wing failures. It seems that the early kits were not well constructed and the wings would break apart in flight. Sug was responsive and fixed the problem by going to another manufacturer and replacing the faulty wings. The new wings are super strong. I haven't built mine yet because I have been busy with many other projects. I hope to have it done by summer though so I can enjoy flying it. BTW, flight reports that I read indicated that it has great low speed characteristics.

Hi Meesh, thanks for the input, I had heard there was a problem with structural failures on the earlier kits but that the problem had been rectified. I guess this kind of killed the popularity of the aircraft. I have seen almost no information from builders on the net or on any of these forums. Apparently the big Sukhoi did not sell well after the early problems. Anybody else know anything about this bird?

I had one that I put a BME50 on. It was one of the early ones with the supposed bad wing. I never had any problems with it. It was not good in knife edge and when it stalled it would drop the right wing. Because of the tall gear it bounced on landing if you had any speed at all and would drop onto the runway if it got slow. But it looked great. If you WANT a Sukhio it is a good plane, mine weighed 16lbs exactly witn the BME 50.

However there are better planes out now than that one for about the same price. Such as the Wild HAre Edge and Extra, or the Great Planes Patty Extra.

I looked at one that a guy had for sale. I squeezed the rib on the wing and it buckled. He was a little upset but understood why I didn't buy it. I have a WH Edge and a PW Extra and both are very good planes.!

i have one that had the bad wing.it blew apart on the first flight but i rebuilt the fuse and buikt a foam wing with carbon fiber in it and have been flying it two years now.it has a fuji bt 50 in it and really flys good.the stock fuel tank will last over twenty minutes on gas.the stock landing gear sucks but tnt made me a gear in the su 26 bowed fashion and stopped the bounceing on landings and i think it looks better.allaround it is a good airplane now that the wing problems have been fixed really fun to fly and gets a lot of stares at the field

I flew mine for 3 years before selling it reluctantly to another club member who loved flying it. For me it was simply time to try a new plane. (Wild Hare Edge) I had a G-45 in mine, and it flew great. Buy one.......You will like it[8D]

hmmmm...... I think I'll pass on this one. I really like the looks of the Sukhois and want to try one but the Sig rendition just isn't giving me the warm and fuzzies. I have heard good things about the Yellow Aircraft Sukhoi Su 31, love the graphics, just wish it was a little bigger.....maybe 28% - 30 %. The only large Sukhois I am aware of are the Hangar 9 version (can't warm up to the Breitling scheme) and Giant Scale Planes.com (avoid like the plague). Geistware, how do you like the overall quality of your WildHare Edge?

I have been flying one for a few years now. It was one of the first batch but the owner of the LHS opened the wings up and reinforced them. NEVER had a problem with it though they are a little bouncy landing. ( and I thought it was just me!)

G62 on the nose. Smoke and Montser power!

yes a 30% true sukoi would be osome to see in the air i would jump on that myself but not at hanger nine's prices

Check out Yellow Aircraft International's wesite if you are a Sukhoi lover. I am wild about their 120 size Sukhoi's paint scheme, I just wish it were a little bigger. If they would market it in a 28%-30% with those graphics I'd be all over it. Geistware, what is your overall assessment of WildHare's quality. I am looking seriously at the 28% Extra due out in March. At $399, I don't think I can pass this one up.

It has sooooo much power that it's scary. Had to do some major beefing up of the firewall and add some weight to the tail even with 4 metal gear servos back there but it is still a sweet flyer. Using a 22X10 Pro zinger prop. Slows down really nice and hasn't shown me any nasty habits yet. With it's short coupling and double beveled control surfaces it will absolutely KNOT UP.

The best part is it's NOT an yet another EDGE_EXTRA_CAP. I guess that's the same reason I got a Katana and drive a Dodge Ram. Just something different.

How much does your Sukhoi weigh?
Mine weighs 16.25 lbs with a Brison 3.2.
Swings a 21x10 Menz S at 6800 rpm at a temp of 32 F and 7100 at a temp of 70 F.
22x10 Menz S turns 6600 at a temp of 32 F.
I didn't know temp would make such a difference.

PS: I am at 2670 ft ASL.
Density altitude on a 70 F day is 4000 ft.
Density altitude on a 32 F day is 1000 ft.

Mine is a little over 16 pounds with an FPE 2.4. Great flyer, but we live near the mountains, and high altitude robs some power...and I sure could use a little more. Would like to try a G62, it just might work up here....

Mine flys great. It is ST 3250 powered. It could use a little more power on verticle. I was a little afraid of the wing at first. Almost two years later I have had no wing problems. It wil take off in it's own length. The high AOA help on that. It balanced with no lead with the battery behind the throttle servo.

Got one of the latest versions on the bench as we speak. So far, so good. Still trying to decide what motor to put in her. Thinking maybe the DA-50 might work well. What would you guys recommend?

DA-50 I think would be an excellent choice. I have a FPE 2.4 on mine, and it needs more. The 2.4 allows me to fly it very scale-like, but 3D is out of the question.

Hello,
Further to my Sig Sukhoi.
Same equipment and gas.
I removed the 5/8" exhaust pipes and soldered 1" pipes to the Bisson muffler.
200 RPM boost!
I use Amsoil Series 2000 2-cycle racing oil mixed as directed at 50-1.
This time at an OAT of 32 degrees F giving me a density altitude of 1500 ASL.
Beautiful February day!
Measured with a TNC tach.

Menz 22x10 "S" 6800 RPM

24 lbs thrust as measured with my spring scale known to be accurate in rough water weighing freshly caught fish!

This is in my Sig Sukhoi that weighs 16.25 lbs.
Nice performance!
Any of the newer 50's will outperform my Brison by a small margin and cost a bunch more!
