Missing step in piper cub ARF plans?

I'm building the Cub .40 ARF, and I think they might have left out a small step. The two wing halves have strings that run through them so you can pull the servo cords through the wing easily. They end up coming out of holes on the ends of the wing where they will be glued together. There are 2 identical holes in the sheeting on the underside of the wings, (they are covered), lined up with the exit holes on the wing ends So i cut the covering on the other holes and pulled the strings through the bottom holes so they arent in the way for gluing, and so you can access the strings later. It is pretty much common sense, but it doesnt mention it at all in the plans, or even show any pictures of it done, or even of the underside of the wings. It doesnt say anywhere where to route the wires either (again common sense, but should be at least mentioned...)

Tell me what you guys think... -Dan

Hi,

I assume this is the GP J3 Fabric covered ARF? I replied to your post on the wing joiner also.

I agree that there are a few "minor" steps overlooked in the manual. They do not mention this and you also need to go the the GP website to download some tech notices - one for the fuel tank and the other relating to the landing gear covers. What you did with the strings is correct. They also forgot to mention application of the decals - also common sense, but I think that they need to revise the manual. I am still at the beginning stages of assembly so I do not know what else may be missing at this point.

A couple of other notes... I also glassed the wing joint; probably not necessary, but it makes me feel better. The plane is a very nice ARF and it seems a shame to use the supplied wire landing gear so I purchased the 1/5 scale gear for the Hangar 9 cub and they will fit nicely. They look a bit more scale than the supplied gear. If you want to spend more money, you could buy the Robart 1/5 scale gear, but I think that they are too costly for this "not truely 1/5 scale" ARF.

Hey, yeah it is the fabric covered one. I am actually putting floats on mine, so i won't be using the gear as of yet... But thanks for the idea, i'll look into that.
Also, thanks for the heads up on the updates to the manual. -Dan

Before you pull the wires through tie a better piece of string on and pull it through first. If by chance you lose the end of the string in the middle of the wing use a vacuum sweeper hose to suck it back out. Be sure and cut the servo opening fabric first.
If it is not too late iron the covering all over first before assembling anything. Put the decals on early in the assembly stage. It will be much easier to put the lightning bolt on the side.
If you ordered the .46 ultimate combo you might have forgot to order 4-40 x 1 /1/2" long muffler bolts for the Pitts muffler.
I had to grind a relief in the motor mount for the muffler to bolt up correctly. Have you had the same problem?
Fun plane to assemble. Wish I had another to do. This one built to quickly.

Hi I'm mounting a 65 LA on my GP J-3 and yes, had to grind a relief in the mount for the Slimline to clear. Also I am glassing the bottom center section of the wing, I too feel more comfortable this way. Later in the spring or summer I'll be getting a 4 cycle for it, maybe a Magnum or Thunder Tiger...what size engine (4 cyc) would be good? Thanks Bill
