W.M. Extra 300 S

Well I finally got around to working on this ARF kit. I did a search and didn't find much on RCU about this airplane. Maybe the threads were lost with the new site. I know this one has been out there for a while. Nice ARF kit. WM sure does do a nice job. I had thought about putting a DA 50 in this one but this engine went into my Pitts II project so I decided to go with the 160 FX after all. I went back and for on this. I have seen three of these planes fly. Two with 160's and one with a gasser. All flew very well.

Curious where you guys mounted your battery and RX? I was thinking about putting an 1100 mah NiCd just behind the tank compartment with the Rx. on the cross member behind the wing tube. I put a third servo in the tail for the rudder. No pull pull. Using a rod with a direct connection. Using Futaba 9303's for the ailerons and 9202's for the elevators and rudder. Ohio Superstar tail wheel small. Dubro 16 oz tank.

I have attached a few pictures of the progress made so far. Used epoxy on the horizontal stab. Just didn't like the two bolts to secure this. Pealed back the covering and used epoxy. This will hold for sure. I know some of you are using a spring type connection to make mounting the wings a bit easier. Anyone have a picture of this? WM has really done a fine job on this one. Man this is a nice ARF.

Sure would appreciate the help on the spring idea for mounting the wings and also best location for battery and Rx. Keep in mind I have a third servo in the tail. Anyone else out there still flying this airplane? Pic's of the spring mount would be appreciated. Thanks.

Here's my rx/batt mounting but I ran a pull/pull and the 160FX. I have a year on the plane with stock screws/thread lock in tail.

Jack, thanks for the response. I was beginning to think no one else had this one. I know it's been out there for a while. Maybe guys have just moved on to the new things. Anyway, I mounted my Rx. much you you did. I decided to put the battery just forward of the wing tube, behind the tank. I made a small platform to secure in place. This allowed me to keep the battery and the Rx centered. I mounted my throttle servo length ways and wish I had mounted it as you did. Got a little binding that was a pain, but worked it out. I felt I was doing a really good job and then messed up on the wheel pants. Got the decorative covering upside down and drilled the holes before I realized this. Nothing 20.00 can't fix, but felt really stupid. The direction are lame, but I should have taken my time on this. Best wheel pants I have ever seen in an ARF for 20.00 to replace.

WM had done such a nice job on this ARF. I have to say it's the best one I have ever assembled. Very nice quality, especially in the cowling and the wheel pants. I used epoxy to secure the horizontal stab with the two stab bolts. Lined up nicely and is secured. I have attached a few new pictures. Just about finished. Only thing that remains is to mount the wheel pants and the decals and then I'm ready for the maiden. If the pants come in this week I hope to maiden this weekend. Will let you know how it goes.

By the way, did you do anything different with the wing mounting bolts? Is there a better and easier way to assembled these at the field? The two nuts with a washer will work but there has to be a better idea here?

Finally received the new wheel pants and this time installed without incident. The WM Giant Extra is finished. Had the maiden flight today and found she is a bit tail heavy. I guess putting the third servo in the tail made a big difference CG wise. I will move the battery more forward, which should do the trick, but picked up some weight strips just in case. I hope I don't have to add dead weight if avoidable. Didn't get any in flight pictures. Will get a few on the next flight. Just glad we got her down and in one piece. She was definitely the wild thing on this maiden flight.

Well guys, my work has me traveling so darn much that I hardly have time for the hobby anymore. I'm staying in it, but downsizing my larger airplanes. This one went on the market through RCU this morning. Thought you might want to see the original details when I assembled it.

The World Models Extra 300s is not a 3-D machine with a 160FX on the nose, but it's a great scale aerobatic airplane. I have to say that I enjoy flying this airplane just about more than any of my larger airplanes. It's smooth on take off and landings with zero bad habits. It's just a fun great airplane to fly.

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S - Maiden flight

Hi I just got the 300 extra from WM, am setting her up for 3D, am a bit concerned in terms of the engine choice for a 3D setup, the folks at the local club are running her with DA50R, when speaking with the local hibby shop, they recommended an MVVS35CC.

For sure the plane is going to be a gasser, but since I did not touch the plane yet, I dont want to end up fitting the wrong engine, anyone have any recommendations on this subject, am especially looking for torque rolls and unlimited.

Thanks

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S - Maiden flight

shesha - I actually considered the DA-50 for this model, but I put the DA in the Pitts that is also for sale. IMHO after assemling this model, the DA-50 would fit nicely. I have seen one with a DA-50 fly at our field. It appeared to be a good match. You will love the airplane. Good luck with your project.

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S - Maiden flight

Well I just went back to the shop took the 35mvvs back, and asked for a 50 mvvs they did not have any since the mvvs crew did not do anything in that class, so the only choice I had was to go back to a DA50R, just sniffing around the shop, I saw a 45cc MVVS there, took the specs sheet out and was surprised that the 45MVVS weighed 20grammes less then the DA50R, produced 5.2HP, thats .2hp more then the DA50. Price was also very attractive.

The weight compensation was directly related to the magnesium crackcase, now since am looking at shaving as much weight out of the 300s I think this combination would do nicely.

Anyone out there had a combination like this one ? Whats your feedback?

I'm running a 40CC First Place Engine with the CH ignition in my Extra 25%. It's a Sig Extra 300XS... THe Engine weight is 53 oz - All CNC aluminum. Super engine that I have been EXTREMELY pleased with!

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

osxpro, nice :) have you got the gasser bolted directly to the FW or have you got any stand offs in there?

I am thinking of putting 3/4 inch stand offs between the 45 cc mvvs and the FW, any recommendations ?

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

I've got it pretty much bolted right on... I do have wood spacers (about 1.5") between the engine and FW. The spacers are square with a hole cut in the center. Sig makes them for the FPE.
Have you looked at First Place Engines? They're Italian made, super nice. Check them out @ www.fpengines.com
As I said in my post, I have been extremely pleased with this engine. The CNC quality is GREAT!!!! and talk about a light engine for the amount of thrust (about 21lbs).... phenomenal!

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

Looks nice price very attractive. but looking at the performance figure mvvs seems to be ahead of the game on the 50cc class, the 45 cc mvvs I have pumps out 5.2HP thats .2 more then the DA 50 and very much more then the http://www.fpengines.com/html/32.htm

The 45CC weighs less then the 30cc class and performs in the 50cc class, honestly it seems to be a very well designed engine, Pe from the netherlands website is very informative, take a look http://www.mvvs.nl/MVVS/main_bestanden/petrol.htm

I really have to get around to build this plane and see what the performance based on the plane and engine combination, should be interesting :)

P.S. Very nice of MVVS to provide a decent amount of 2T mobile oil with the 45CC package.

I hv this plane with a DA50. I get good power to load ratio with this block. Its the best thing i've ever flown. Very 3D capable, yet very docile in IMAC manoeuvers. Lands and takes off like a .40 size trainer.

I'm flying the WM 300S Patty with a G-62 on C&H and a Slimline Pitts.

At 6000' elevation it'll hover easily with a Menz 22-10.

Mine weighs 15.5 pounds. Tank on GC. Battery and RX right under the front of the turtledeck.

JR8231s on ailerons and elevators. JR8411 on rudder. Hitec 8ch Supreme RX.

Smooth setup. My favorite plane so far.

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

Hi Shesha,

I happen to already have the MVVS 35cc, and I love to buy this very same plane that you are buying, (the world models 300s 1.6) I wanted to know your thought on this combination as I really can not afford to buy a new engine. Will I be able to 3D with this engine?

Thanks again.

shesha 12-11-2005 09:27 AM

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

Fatboy, the MVVS you got is a 35CC, the one I have is the latest 45CC that is classed as a 50CC engine with the weight and approximate size of a 35CC engine.

If I am not mistaken the 35CC engine you have on hand has an orange color cyclinder head. The guys at the local club had a WM 300S 1.60 with a 35CC, sure it can do 3D but not to the max, the 35CC is strugling bigtime.

They are all running DA50's here on the same spec plane, seems to be a good match, I just thought I would try something different, less weight more power but different CC. My gut feeling it will be a nice combo, it will be some time till I put it together, am working on another project at the moment, so dont look for a photos and comments very soon.

The Mustang P51 by Nick Zirolli has finally arrived with a G62 Zenoah, should be fun to build.

Tata :)

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

Thanks Shesha for the fast reply,

I was thinking along the same lines really, so what do you think if I put this 35cc engine in a 1.2 size extra? whould'nt that be too heavy for the plane?

Make sure you post your results with your combination.

Thanks again.

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

Well the P51 Ziroli is going to take a while to put together, and since the nice weather is not going to last forever, I decided to put together the Extra 330 together, I have to admit, this is the first time I purchased a WM ARF plane, and am impressed by the build quality.

The instructions leaves something to be desired, but with some background experience and the ease of build on this plane, it took not more then 4 hours to put everything together apart from the engine block.

Everything just fell in place from the tail stab, rudder wings and all just nicely fits together.

The throttle servo location took a while as soime of the glue that was used to contruct the plane left little uneveness in the throttle servo mount plate, a little dremmel snading took out the unwanted glue and some little alignements did the trick, just take not which side the throttle servo needs to be mounted as per the engine your fitting and desired mount location.

Just a note on the tail stab, when epoxying the rear end to the main fuselage, strip off some of the covering to have good adearance to the stab and fuselage.

Think tommorrow or maybe later this evening, I should be done with the plane.

Hope the engine choice I have selected lives up to my expectations. For such a nice model it would be a shame to have chosen the wrong combination.

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

In my opinion DA 50 is a better match. However, I would suggest that you break in the MVVS and run it for good number of hours ie more than 25hrs, then report the findings. I wish you a great maiden.

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

Any recommendations in terms of mounting the da50 onto the wm 300 extra 1.6 should it it mounted at the exact measurements of the 1.60 os engine location or consider mounting more off center ?

shesha 01-09-2006 06:20 PM

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

Never mind i got my hands on a old used 1.60 os engine marked the positions as per the manul took it out and placed the 50 and adjusted accordingly. Now it's bang on, lets hope the flying it right from this offset measurement.

shesha 01-26-2006 10:29 PM

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

I did some modifications on the WM standard wing bolts, inserted blind nuts in there and reinforced the inner part of the wing mount location on the main fuselage, will post photos shortly.

Also that DA50 installation was tricky but looks good now.

RE: W.M. Extra 300 S

This thread "re-sparked" my interest in this model so I went and looked at www.airborne-models.com for current pricing.

I was surprised to find that the 1.60 size is LESS expensive than the 1.20 size by $40 or so ! What's up with that ? Now I know the 1.60 size has been out for years and I am sure that is the reason but it just seemed strange.

One question I have for you guys...which wing configuration do you prefer ? The shoulder mounted or low wing versions of the 300 ??
