Global Raven 40
Need to know if anyone out there has flown the Global Raven 40 before, I got one and I did some calculations and it seens to be a pretty high wing loading plane. Hence, I need some advice ... thanks! Also ... anyone for the manufacturers website?

RE: Global Raven 40
Just get rid of it. It's probably one of the worst flying planes ever designed.
|
RE: Global Raven 40
Sheeeeesh ... I got a LEMON!!! Have you flown one before then? In what way was it bad? I mean the wing loading is really nuts for a plane that size.
|
RE: Global Raven 40
We hate to tell a person bad news about their new pride and joy. It's best to sell it and get an Extra or Edge of the same size. They will last more than 1/2 flight.
The Raven will snap in a heartbeat. Those wing caps weren't added for beauty, but they still don't help tip stall. The plane will fly if it's kept fast without a slow speed turn. If they didn't snap on takeoff, it was a sure bet it would on final turn at approach. |
RE: Global Raven 40
Its okay ... I can take it, now to hog it off to someone else! Yeah ... when I calculated the wing loading after weighing the plane I was kinda pale! Now how slow is slow? Next time I need to check a lot more before I get a plane.

RE: Global Raven 40
I've seen 3 or them over the years. everyone them ended up crashing with the pilot being oddly enough... happy about it:D The worst flight trait I remember all of them saying it had was snapping without warning... no matter how little elevator throw you had.

RE: Global Raven 40
Anyone wants to buy a LOVELY Raven 40? Nice looking plane, really beautiful! Hahahahaaa ...
|
RE: Global Raven 40
Let me make it even worse. IF you can taxi it, and IF you get it airborne without running off the runway and hitting something; if you go to fast and give it to much elevator it will snap. If you fly it to slow it will snap. If you reduce power in the landing turn to much it will snap. The planes have been discontinued years ago; I think you can tell why. I got tricked into getting mine via UPS sight unseen, probably just like you did. The first time I saw that small wing and it took both hands to lift it, I knew I was in trouble. When I realized how short coupled it was I started looking for another plane.

RE: Global Raven 40
I saw one fly, the guy had to keep the power up all the time, he end up crashing the thing, nice looking plane tho.
|
RE: Global Raven 40
I noticed the short wings too but was too foolish looking at the nice graphics and design to bother to calculate wing loading etc. I think it will make a really nice piece to hang up ... unless someone wants to buy a lovely Raven from me! Hehehe ...

RE: Global Raven 40
I'll give ya 5.00 for it.:D

RE: Global Raven 40
Yeah yeah ... trod all over me ... :P

RE: Global Raven 40
I have a raven 40 and built a 60 size also. And they both fly great. You want to sell it i'll take it.

RE: Global Raven 40
This is a breath of fresh air. I spoke with a LHS owner and he has sold 2 Raven 40s to one guy, the guy crashed the first and came back to buy the second stating that the plane was nice to fly. Would you care to describe how the plane handles? Does it really do all the nasty things that have been stated above?
I lost my plans and would love to get a copy off you if I can, unless you wanna buy it! How much would you pay for the plane? Do PM me if you wanna buy it ... I might let it go. Thanks! I love the internet ... |
RE: Global Raven 40
Hey, whadayamean, the raven 40 is a great flying plane. I have about 150 flights on mine. 33oz per sqft helps with the snaps (gad can't believe I said that). How many planes will snap roll with just a slight pump of the elevator? It's like having a snap roll switch. Non of that monkeying with rudder elevator and ailerons to get a good snap roll. I like doing aerobatics and replacing all of the roll elements with snaps and I just have to pump the elevator to do them. Just make sure you are not pointed straight down with less than 100 feet of altitude. You probably won't make it unless you push down elevator. It doesn't seem to snap with down. The engine in the thing has never quit. If it did I'm sure the plane would just quit flying and fall down.

RE: Global Raven 40
I hear what both Raven Nut and you are saying, I will take her out soon. Will plonk in a TT .46 ... that should be sufficient. I am not dying to do full acrobatics to the point like I am preparing to qualify for the TOC! Just a query ... how hot does she come in for landings? I need a copy of the manual ... any chance? Thanks!!!
|
RE: Global Raven 40
Guys ... where is your CG point? Thanks a lot.
|
RE: Global Raven 40
It's not bad on landing. Just keep off the elevator if it starts to get slow and use the throttle. The speed is a little high coming in but not rediculus. I expected worse from 33 oz/sqft. I have a Magnum 53 xl in mine. I'll see if I have the manual.
|
RE: Global Raven 40
I don't have the manual anymore but mine balances about 3 to 3.25 inches behind the leading edge at the fuselage.

RE: Global Raven 40
I've got one (still unbuilt) with the manual. It states the C of G is 3 1/2 inches back from the LE with a 1/4 inch margin either way. It states DO NOT go further back than 3 3/4 inches from the LE.
Saw one fly some years back with a Magnum .46 up front. It was quick, but I've seen quicker models since. (The new Ripmax Magnum for a start.) I later spoke to another club member who has one, (he flies B747-400's for a living) and he put in more wing dihedral when building. His flew o.k., very quick control responses, (plenty of Exponential needed ) but not one for the novice. He said to me ..."for goodness sake, FLY HIGH while your getting this one under your belt..." |
RE: Global Raven 40
Thanks ... will remember to keep it easy on the elevator when I do the maiden, not that I will be the one flying it on maiden! Think I will keep the CG to 3" to be safe. Anyways, I weighed my plane before assembly and I got about 30 oz wing loading for it with a TT .46

RE: Global Raven 40
Woody ... any chance of me getting a photocopy of it, I can source it from this part of the world!!! SOS!!! But seriuosly, would be great if ya could scan it and just email it. Thanks a lot!!! Heheheeee ...

RE: Global Raven 40
Yeah, No worries. Its already scanned .
I did the same thing for another guy some time back and still have the scans on my HD. Send me your private e-mail address and I will get the doco off to you. It will come in 4 parts. Just too big to send as 1 file. |

RE: Global Raven 40
tianci... the raven from global is aaaaa... beautiful plane to fly...i am the guy you mention that bought the second raven from hobby tech.i don't understand why some say its easy to snap...and hard to taxi...mine was ok....take off beautifully.by the way where do you fly often?.my first raven run on a os 52 four stroke...i agree that thru your calculation the plane is slow.any [;) i stall my first raven after a loop.....i order one more from awie the moment i crashed it.one lesson is this is a very precision plane.timing is very important when you recovering it after snap roll , loop , stall turn etc.....it tends to stall very easily.....about the speed....i don't know much about wing loading and calculations theory....the second one i had i run with a os50fx and hope to get more speed...not much diffrent....so how much are you planning o sell yours?.....let me know cause i really love this plane...by the way i have some plane to trade ...are you interested?.....:D....
