Sig 4*60 or???
Hi all,
Well I'm coming to the end of my first month in R.C.ing.. My Avistar, has a few small dings But still looks new after about a total of about 25 flights including solo.. It lands on the wheels.. Maybe a bounce or two extra at times.. But it alway taxies back home:-) Anyway I've have been thinking and looking for a second plane... a low wing.. My instructor did not want me to buy the Avistar, instead going with the flat bottom.. This was when I was telling him, I thought I'd pick this up fairly fast and since money is a factor what did he think about me getting a low wing trainer?? OK, no need to get into that. So I end up getting the Avistar.. Now he's telling me I'm ready for a low wing... I really have been looking at the Sig 4* 60 ARF, I was going to power it with the Tower 2 stroke .75.. Wanted to try a .91 four stroke.. But.... to much $$ at the moment.. Is this a good plane/setup? Is there anything I should change or modifiy? Is landing gear/wing joints in need of strengthening? I most likely will test it, being the first tail dragger.. Would the 4* 40 with OS .46AX be a better choice? I did want the dual ailerons.. Just incase I could USED it:-) Is there better 2nd/3nd planes to get?? Thanks for any info |
RE: Sig 4*60 or???
Ron,
I have both the 4*40 and the 4*60. I run a .46 in the 4*40 and the OS .61 in the 4*60. Mine were kits so I don't know much about the ARF version. I love the way these planes fly and I would have to say I fly my 4*40 more than anything else I have. You don't need much runway for the 40 version so you can fly it just about anywhere. I bulit both planes per instructions and haven't had to beef of anything in the kits. Hope this helps. Ed |
RE: Sig 4*60 or???
Ron,
I think you're choice is a good one for either the 40 or 60. If you're in a windy zone of AZ, then the 60 being heavier, would be more stable in flight. The 4 Star series are very slow to tip stall with landings a walking speed. I have yet to see any gear failure from the ones in our club. I'm flying the Modeltech DragonLady which has the same traits as the 4 Stars, only choosing it since there were so many Sig's at our club, that I wanted to fly something a bit different. You really won't notice anything much different from the Avistar. That style plane makes an excellent low wing trainer before going to large gas or the fun-fly / 3D planes. |
RE: Sig 4*60 or???
Thanks rreiss and echobot,
The order has been in my cart for four days now, Guess I'll take the next step and send the order in:-) Cutting cost was my reason for the Tower 2-stroke .75.. Are these ok engines? My only other engine is the LA .46 on the Avistar.. Thanks again!! |
RE: Sig 4*60 or???
I have been around 2 Tower .75 engines even though I don't own one. In my opinion , they are good engines. They make good power & seem to tune easily.

Thanks TennCharlie,
I think my order is almost sent:) Have a Great One!! |
RE: Sig 4*60 or???
ORIGINAL: raideron Is there better 2nd/3nd planes to get?? A couple of months back I had the opportunity to look at the 4*60 (red) and Tiger 60 side by side in the LHS. The first thing that struck me was how DULL that red oracover is that SIG use on the ARF. The next obvious difference is that Goldberg supply a trike set of legs whereas the 4* is a tail dragger. The Tiger has a hard point in front of the wing for a taildragger gear, and blind nuts pre-installed at the back for the tail wheel. The other main difference no-one really talks about is the plug in wings on the Tiger. I presume the wings on the 4*60 are one piece and are glued together using a wood dihedral brace. The wings on the Tiger are joined using aluminum tubes, each half has a front dowel and a bolt down at the rear. This means that you can seperate the wings for transportation. Overall, I thought that the Tiger was a better quality product than the $*, so you can guess which I went for. The Tiger is slightly more expensive than the 4*, then if you want to fly it as a taildragger there's also the cost of the LG to add. It seems though that many people choose to assemble as a trike, then convert to taildragger later... |
RE: Sig 4*60 or???
tiggerinva, Thanks! The tiger was on my list also, But somehow I
keep leaning to the Sig.. Even with its different covering.. The wing transport was also a thought.. Not so much as knowing that the tiger" wing came apart, But that it 4*60 fits in my trunk:) Thanks |
RE: Sig 4*60 or???
Havng had the 4*40, 4*60 and the Tiger 60.... If you want stability in gusty wind... get the Tiger. Its heavier and not bounced as much.
The 4*60 is heavier than the 4*40... but the effect of scale comes into play... it flies like a lighter aircraft. From experience with previous models I expected that, and added retracts mainly to bring the weight up. It still floated just like the 4*40... but the ground handling improved immensely. :D If you need more stability in wind... there would be no problem with just adding weight on the CG of the 4*. (vertical performance could suffer if you added a lot... but a heavilly weighted 4* is a trainer for flying warbirds.) The Tower .75 should be PLENTY of power for the 4*60... For best results use the longest prop listed in the engine's manual as being appropriate. (it might be able to hover when your skill gets to that level.) The Tiger's wing comming apart for transport is handy... but not that big a deal. The fuselage is almost as long as the wing. If you have room for the fuselage, the wing shouldn't be a problem on the 4*60. |
RE: Sig 4*60 or???
Thank You FHHuber!!
I've seen a lot of your posts!! Your a jewel in this!! And your advise is much heeded!! We get windy here.. Ft. Mohave AZ.. But I keep it on the ground then.. Big chicken:-) Plus I've got use to taking the plane home as I took it... But then... I'm getting a red plan... Wish it was Silver and Black though.. Hey Thank you again!! |

I have 2 4*60's and love both of them. The first one is the red ARF and it has a GMS 76 engine on it. You will love the tower 75 on yours and it will have plenty of power to do vertical stuff. I recovered mine with blue and yellow monocoat because I wanted it to look different. The second one was built from a kit by a friend of mine. I got it from him when he was done with it. It has a Magnum 91 4 stroke on it. I love this plane the best. A 91 4 stroke is the perfect engine for this plane. Here are some pictures and I hope that you enjoy your 4* as much as I do mine. RE: Sig 4*60 or???
Hey trroscoe!! Very Nice!! I like it!!!
I may recover mine, But most likely only if I have too.. I was going to do the same on the cockpit, cutting it shorter and spraying flat black.. I like that look!! I really wanted a 4 stroke like the sound and less oil!! But some things make you go another way.. I just want to have enough power, That way I can always run half throttle:-) Nice pics guy!! |
RE: Sig 4*60 or???
Yo Ron, A good friend of mine soloed on an Avistar last year and eased in to a 4*60 no problem. Picked right up on it being a tail dragger and all without a hitch. I didn't think you wanted to go larger, but you will like this model. Looks kinda like a Warbird on a fly by. He added some white to the top of the wing up front and on the hor. stab. with a little bit on the vert. stab. Really changed the look without a lot of work. I'll dig you up a pic. Later, Joe

RE: Sig 4*60 or???
Hey Joe:-)
Hope all is great!!.. Yeah I had the .40 on the cart first... Then somehow went bigger:-) I'm kind of in a lull in my training.. Thinking too much!! Anyway I almost ditched the Avistar:-( I was practicing approaches real slow.. (have been coming in "Hot":-) Still have that fence/bush head trip) Anyway I got too slow on final bank.. It fell about 8-10' thinking I lost the signal.. I was looking for the softest "Crash Landing" ..... Then I remember... Hey.. I believe you can use the throttle.. DA So I power up just in the nick of time just as the plane starts to drop the remaining 3'..... Hey she taxied back too me:-) You have a Great One!! Hey.. I soloed after 2-10-2004 :-) |
RE: Sig 4*60 or???
