Avistar 40 RTF.. any good?
Anyone here tried the hobbico avistar RTF? Iv have experience in electric RC looking for my first gas plane........ anty help would be apreciated thanks

RE: Avistar 40 RTF.. any good?
Absolutely! Learned to fly with one and thought it was great. I have to admit, though, that replacing the 40LA with a 46FX made it a MUCH better bird. You can do OK with the 40LA, though.

Avistar is an industry standard if you ask me for trainers. Great bird to learn to fly with or to have as a sunday cruiser :)

Great plane and the RTF is about as RTF as you can get and still pack the plane in a box. I put mine together in less than 40 minutes, but you still need to charge the batteries overnight.
I have over 100 flights on mine and the OS 40LA is still going strong. It likes 15% fuel and a 10x6 prop. The semi-symetrical wing is what makes this plane a lot more fun than a basic trainer. It will do all the regular stunts well, and still is easy to fly when throttled back a little. Landings are easier than a flat bottom, high dihedral trainer, like the SuperStar. Just make sure you check all the connections and tighten the screws. Mine had no problems, but my nephews SuperStar had a fuel tank seal that wasn't tightened down and it leaked fuel all over the inside. Go ahead and get it. You will be very happy and in the air quickly. |

You see a lot of Avistars at the field. My first was a Hobbistar 60. Haven't seent he NextStar but that is supposed to be pretty good too. I like the 60 size only because it's bigger and easier to see if it gets away a little bit and I find it's a little more stable if the wind gusts a bit (which is pretty common here in Chicagoland). Whichever you choose, they are great planes.

RE: Avistar 40 RTF.. any good?
DFalpha, I still have mine and have been airing it out for years now. Very durable and a sweet flyer. I fly quite few of them on training nights and of all the combos, the one that I feel has the best power to weight ratio is the 46 LA. If it comes with a .40 see if they will swap it out for a couple bucks more when you buy it. You won't regret getting an Avistar. I'll bet you hang on to it when you advance to other planes. Good luck, Joe

thanks for the response... I dont know how to ask them to swap if I order it through Tower hobbies...............

One thing to add to setting up the Avistar. You can go with the stock method of attaching the wing halves together with the little metal plates and screws, but I would epoxy the wing halves together. You still must include the metal rod inside the wing (that's critical!), but I found the little wing screws came lose after a half-dozen flights. Epoxy it and you won't have to worry about them. Epoxying the rear tail stabilizers isn't a bad idea either.
Don't get me wrong, the plane will fly fine if built stock. But once you get comfortable with the plane, you'll want to start stressing it with more agressive stunts. The extra epoxy will add strength, not a lot of weight, and most importantly, peace of mind... Oh, and use at least 14 rubber bands, change the front wheel for one about 1/4-1/2" smaller, floss your teeth, feed the dog, call your Mom, etc..... :) |

RE: Avistar 40 RTF.. any good?
They are a very sturdy plane. I had mine out last weekend and on the first flight of the second day, I got some kind of interference on my radio. It started just going in full power loops. I bought the ARF version because I wanted the 46 AX. After my crash most of the very experienced pilots at the club I was at could not believe the plane was not smashed. It took about 15 minutes to change the prop and spinner, patch a small hole in the wing, put a little CA in a crack around the tail feathers, and check my receiver for bad connections. I made 5 more flights on the day and everything went perfect. Definitely epoxy the wing, BUT if you have access to an experienced builder or you can find out how, I would glass the wing together to get an even stronger wing. My instructor is an awesome helli pilot and a top rate plank pilot, and he loves how the Avistar handles. When I was going through the damage, one of the guys was talking about cutting the dihedral out of the wing for more performance and better rolls, and my instructor told him, that even with the dihedral it rolls really well and stock performance is some of the best he has ever seen out of a production model.

RE: Avistar 40 RTF.. any good?
ah! Iv made up my mind........ gonna order the RTF version and buy the 46 later............ is that a good choice?
|
RE: Avistar 40 RTF.. any good?
Avistar was the plane i solo'd on. But the wing broke in half while doing loop. I know of 3 other people who had the same problem. Of course, its all up to you
|
RE: Avistar 40 RTF.. any good?
Thats why I would glass it from the start and you wont have to worry about it. The wing would be solid as a rock.

Yes, it's worth it, especially if you want to get in the air fast. You can't beat the RTF Select package. It's all good gear that can be used in another plane later, but you won't want to as long as the Avistar can fly.
You can use the 40LA in something else later if you want to go to a .46. I crashed my first Avistar (pilot error) and bought a second Avistar RTF. Later, I used the first Avistar's engine, rx and servos in a Thunder Tiger Lazy Tiger P-51 funfly and it's a blast of a little plane. The 40LA is just right for that plane, and all the old Avistar stuff I used is working fine in it after over 50 flights. BTW, there is a ton of info on the Avistar on this site. It's probably one of the most popular RC planes these days, especially for a first or second plane. A search will pull up literally hundreds of threads on RCU. You can get a lot of info very quick with a few searches. |

sweet.... RTF RTF RTF!

RE: Avistar 40 RTF.. any good?
dude can u help me with what excessories I need?

RE: Avistar 40 RTF.. any good?
Lots of info here...
http://www.rcuniverse.com/university...l1=1&classid=0 One thing that article fails to mention is the glo starter. I prefer the SonicTronic starters with the meter on the top. http://sonictronics.com/products/nistarters/prod01.htm The Beginners forum has a lot of good threads on first time equipment lists, and on the Avistar to. |
RE: Avistar 40 RTF.. any good?
If you have prior experence the the Avistar is a good choice.
I would recommend that you get an electric starter and fuel pump. A field battery a glow ignitor and a tool box to mount it all in. |
RE: Avistar 40 RTF.. any good?
Check out our club's website [link]http://www.bluemaxrc.com[/link] . It has a pretty comprehensive list in the Beginners Info section. It has recommendations on planes, building tips, etc. Sure helped me out when I started...still need to refer back every so often as a refersher course.
