GP Super Stearman
 

They are in stock and mine is on the way. I've been flying Helicopters for the most part the last three years but this plane has me all excited about flying airplanes again. Now I need to decide on an engine. I'm thinking about an OS 1.20 pump, YS 1.40 sport, or a Enya 1.55. It will be mounted inverted. I've been leaning towards the Enya but not sure how well she idles without constant glow heat at low RPMs. I could put an onboard glow igniter on her but would rather not if I can get away with it.

I'd go with the 120, this plane is not doing to need 3D power. The pump will help it run inverted.

I printed out the instruction manual from the GP web site and they used an OS 120 single.

And, they provide a neat little plywood box to fasten to the motor mount to put the 18 ounces of lead into, which was needed to balance the plane.

It's all there in black and white, right in the manual.

At least they told you to plan for it, not like some other manufacturers, who never mention that you have to add a ton of weight to balance your completed model.

The Enya, probably heavier than the OS, will require less lead.

The completed plane, however, reportedly weighed less than 14 pounds dry.

Actually, I wonder if a G-38 (have it on hand) work. I think if someone chose to go with a four cycle, the Saito 170 R3 makes a better choice than a 1.20 single.

When you get it, could you measure the cowl diameter, please? I'm thinking of getting one of these, but would like to go with a gas engine, and want to see what may fit without cutting holes.

Yep..A G38 will fit in it....LHS just got one in today..looks like a vreg good kit...I'll get mine later...

I think you will find the G-38 too much for the plane, a G-26 would be my choice for it,if it is only 18 oz added then the G-38 is gonna make it nose heavy.

Just got mine from Tower on Saturday. I agree with the prior post that a G38 is too much engine. This is not a very big airframe and it looks like a G26 will be the appropriate engine in power, weight, and size. I've got a B&B G26 that I'm going to use in the plane and I'll post some pictures of the plane with the engine as soon as my wife gets back with my camera. The quality seems first rate, and it has some interesting landing gear. It's not nearly as large as I was expecting, but at least it should fly well without having to spend huge $$ on servos. This is no 3D machine anyways, so I'm expecting it to be a great flier on a G26 and some mid-range servos. I'm going to go with the two aileron servos and slave the second set of ailerons off the first as in the real planes. It even comes with pilots! Not bad for the price, although I would have liked it a bit larger with easier to remove/install wings.

My dad is flying a Pica Waco thats the same size as the Stearman. It has a os 120pumped in it. It flyies very scale like using altitude to gain the airspeed. He's taking the 120 out for another model he's building. Looks like a Saito 150 will be taking it's place. It's awesome being able to make it look real in the air. Not to many people can make them look scale gotta fly them full throttle all the time..

I will be ordering my GP Super Stearman early next month and am tossing up on a similar choice of engines.
I had been thinking about the choice between an OS 1.20 w pump or a Saito 1.50
The two are similar in price and the Saito is slightly lighter.

What is swaying me towards the OS is the fact that it gets mounted inverted and I was thinking that the idle might be more reliable with the pumped motor.

I would be grateful for people's thoughts / comments on these two engines.

What other impressions do you have from the kit?

Given that this is a "first release", have you come across any problems yet?

I got mine Stearman on Saturday also. I got the wings together, and I'm going to mount the engine next. I've opted for an OS 160 Twin I have had for a while. Fits perfectly in the cowl without sticking out. I am also going with two servos in the lower wing and slave the upper ones to them. I' ll probably use Hitec 625s.
I found one problem with the ailerons. All the hinge slots were 1/16 off center. This is easy to correct by moving the slots. I like the size of this plane as it will fit in my van without taking it apart.
The OS 160 requires a box for moving it forward. I will put a 3000 mah 6 volt battery pak in the box. This is the first plane I ever built where the mnfr. says to add nose weight (18 oz). The big battery should help, and maybe I'll install on board glow with a big battery pak also. Might as well make the weight carry its share!

Have you made any progress on the Stearman?
I'm very interested in hearing your opinions of the plane.

Also - what engine did you end up getting for it?
I noticed you were looking at the Enya. I haven't had a great deal of luck locating any Enya mail order places in the US.
Any tips?

I haven't recieved mine yet, UPS sent it to the wrong distribution center so it has been delayed a few days. Thats OK I haven't decided on a motor yet. At this point the YS 1.40 Sport seems the best choice. I like having a pump on an inverted engine and I also like the extra power of the 1.40.

Finally took some pictures of my cowl. The cowl measures close to 8" in diameter near where the front lip begins to curve inwards. It is about 8-3/4" wide at the base, and is a little more than 6" long on the left side. The more I look at it, the more I am surprised at how small it is. It DEFINITELY doesn't need any high end servos, and my G26 will fit PERFECTLY and should fly it GREAT! So far, the quality still seems top notch and I have not run into any problems, although I have just started working on it.

Keep us informed rongreg13, I am wanting one of these. I have a Kyosho PT-17 stearman that I am trying to sell on ebay and when, if (Lord willing) it sells I am going to get a G-26 and then the GP Stearman. Keep us informed with some more pics.

I got mine today. I have only had a chance to look at everything through the plastic and all I can say is WOW! want a nice plane. This thing when assembled will be more than big enough for my taste. Time to order an engine.[&:]
