paleodust...I think too much power w/ OS 61 stroke. My Saito 72 is MORE than enough power to climb unlimited. It is important to keep the weight down on this plane. It was not designed to be massively overpowered. The Saito 72 or YS 63 are both out of their recommended range and will pull this thing without leaving you wanting any more power I guarantee. As their recommended range I'm sure you could follow it and at the higher end of the range have all the power you need.

Check the weight on the OS 61 & if you do use it be judicious w/throttle management.

Anybody have pictures of a Saito 72 installed?

R/C Foolish,

See the Online Magazine Reviews on this site. RC administrator did a review on this plane with the Satio 72.

Hey Marc,

The review you did on this plane is sure helping me assemble mine. I have just finished the pull - Pull set up's. I'm putting in the YS63 which is a couple of grams less weight than the Satio 72.
Did you have to add any weight to the tail to make it balance?

No weight was added BUT this year I will move the battery back to test a more rearward CG to see how it flies. It performed well with the CG as I had it set but I want to see what it feels like with it back another 1/4" to 3/4"

Someone mentioned that this plane began to drop like a rock at lower speeds, but after they added in some flapperon and up elevator it behaved better, could you elaborate on this? Does it start to drop and nose in unless you bring it in with some throttle? After you added the flapperons could you drop the engine to idle and land it, did it still land what you would consider "hot" or was it a smooth landing? Once on the ground, was it squirrly, or could you easily use the rudder to wiggle the speed out of it? And I mean landing on asphalt, not grass. I'm looking for a plane to fly after my Thunder Tiger Stick, so I for sure past an acrobatic trainer and looking for something that can perform some serious 3D.

Thanks

I've only landed mine on grass and I keep a bit of speed up while greasing it in. I'll get more experience this summer to see just how slow I can get it before it drops. I do have flaperons set up already and will play with them I'm sure. If you watch the videos on my review you can judge the landing speed yourself. The beauty of the internet :)

I have only flown on grass with this plane. I have flaperons on mine. I can slow mine way down. The danger is opening the throttle to quickly. You had better be on the rudder. Anyway, I have done Harrier landings in a breeze. Without flaperons and min breeze I set up with 1/5 throttle. Over the threshold I slowly close the throttle and it will settle in. Using some elevator will knock off the remaining speed. With a slight breeze I will set up and chop the throttle and let it slide down the landing slope. Over the threshold I will increase the throttle to 1/6. This will slow the descent. Back off the throttle slowly along with a little up elevator will result in a perfect three point. With the flaperons, I keep the throttle at 1/8 all the way down to touchdown. It will float. I use flaperons only in dead calm.

landing gear

REINFORCE LANDING GEAR! Just so everyone knows the gear block is only held by a little hot glue. You would think with a great plane like this they wouldn't skip on the glue.

Check out the posted pictures. Aileron failed. All gaps were sealed. Don't remember doing anything out of the ordinary.

The interesting thing is that I didn't notice that I had suffered damage, other than some yaw, until after the plane landed.

Do you think I should tell Dave about this?

Ouch! I would send them a note about it to see if it was an oddball thing or if it is occuring in more than just your model. I haven't heard of other incidences of this happening here on the boards though.
