In the instructions for the plane it says: "Measure 1/2" back from the hinge line of the elevator and make a mark" then "Line up the front edge of the horn with the mark" (... mark holes and mount)

Using this method the mounting holes for the clevis are not centered over the hinge line. They end being about 3/16" behind the center line.

Does anyone know if this is done for a reason? Or should I center it over the hinge line like I have normally done in the past.

Someone at the field says mounting it off center will cause a strain on the hinges. I did have two CA hinges fail this weekend, they tore right at the hinge line.

Some aircraft need more throw one way than the other (differencial throws). This could be the reason they are doing this.

I know there are a lot of these planes out there. Did everyone build as per instructions with the elevator horn slightly offset the hinge line? :confused:

I have built several of them and have always centered the horn over the hinge line.

Horizon Hobby tech support says the only reason for mounting the Sullivan horn 1/2" back from the hinge line is to keep the 4 mounting screws in the hardwood, any closer and 2 of the 4 screws would be going into balsa.

for what its worth.....I have a H9 cap 232....
after seeing 2 other caps totalled due to elevator failure....
I opened up the skin and glued ply blocks into mine.....and then fixed the elevator horns to them......60 or so flights later no problems.......

Yup, I did the same thing. Did you know that the supplied elevator pushrod is exactly the correct thickness? Two pieces, cut to fit into the corner of the elevator frame and glued securely, do the trick. A little white U-Cote, and nobody will ever know...<G>
