RE: seagull extra 300 or edge540
I have the Extra 300 with a GMS .76 in it. In my opinion, it's a perfect match. It has plenty of power. I don't own the Edge 540, but saw one at the field....with a .91 4-stroke, it needed A LOT of nose weight, and had enough power to fly around. Unlimited vertical was out of the question. If I had the option to choose one of these two birds again for my .76, I'd definitely pick the Extra.

RE: seagull extra 300 or edge540
I have the Extra also... It's pulled around by a saito 91... Needed some nose weight. Flies insanely fast. Thing is the Extra was a .40 A/C that they "upgraded" to a 60 class... And it doesn't look like they made it bigger... Hell my manual still read all the 40 size engines as choices! The 540, I believe, is actually built as a real 60, not an upgraded 40.
The wings show the same span BUT the weights show 6-7 on the Extra and 8-9 on the 540. The fuse in the 540 is also larger than the extra. That 2 lbs is the difference on the engine. The wing loading goes up by about a few ounces. The extra you can put two servos on the elevator which can make for some fun 3D if you want. I'm not sure about the 540. All that said I think the 300 for the 75.... If you had something bigger around that would be ideal for the 540. |
RE: seagull extra 300 or edge540
Thanks guys I will be going to the hobby store on friday to look at both but it looks like the extra is the one that is going to come home with me:D. Is there any thing that I need to know about mods to this plane and how it flys. I have read that it can snap on you at low speed. I have been flying my ultra stick 60 so I hope I am up to extra.

RE: seagull extra 300 or edge540
When I put mine up for the first time this past weekend it was real nice... I mistook the responsiveness as being a bit snappy.. Reason being my other a/c is a Waco bipe... It's a bit more sluggish. after i got use to it, it was fun... I was per book on the CG. Landing on the low rates was cake... You should be able to fly it just fine. Just make sure to get a lot of time on low rates before flipping to High... it's an Extra afterall. Low rate acrobatics is still fun and clean. good luck

RE: seagull extra 300 or edge540
I don't remember making any major mods to mine.....aside from stuff like fuel tank, wheels, hardware.
By the time the plane snaps, you'll KNOW you were going to slow. On your first couple of landings, you might drop a wingtip if you slow down a bit too much, but it's easily recoverable when this happens. You'll get the feel for the landing speed pretty quickly. It doesn't land hot, but it's definitely not as slow as your Ultra Stick. The control surfaces are EXTREMELY effective. DO NOT exceed the recommended elevator throw until you are very comfortable with the plane. It's very effective. The control surfaces are very deceptive....they look small, but are very effective. |
RE: seagull extra 300 or edge540
Thanks for the info I will be going to the hobby store tomarow and will let you know which one I get :D also what kind of tank did you replace the stock one with.

RE: seagull extra 300 or edge540
I replaced my tank with a Sullivan Flex tank....I think I used a 10 oz. tank. I wanted to go bigger, but if I recall, it wouldn't fit.

RE: seagull extra 300 or edge540
As you say that I remember... I did the same thing Sulli 10oz flex.... I could have gone with the 12 if i had enlarged the hole in the formers... while my LHS guy said it won't be a problem, I chose not to... 10 gets me 7 -9 minutes depending on throttle... It could get 10 minutes, but i like to run her rich. I only ever fly for 5-6 minutes at a clip anyhow... but yes that stock 8oz is a bit small even to me. I also went with 5 cell pack and 2 servos on the elevator... I may switch out the clevises as i'm using the stock right now... For an easy sly maiden i didn't see the point. i'll go 2-56 when i'm ready for high rates.

RE: seagull extra 300 or edge540
Running mine with a Saito 91...no big mods, squeezed (emphasis on squeezed) a Great Planes 12oz tank in somehow, glued the servo tray and firewall a bit extra...first flight this weekend if the 20-30 mph winds ever let up..will let you know how it goes....I also added some extra color striping to the underside of the wing as I didn't think the all white would show up well in the air...Bill

RE: seagull extra 300 or edge540
Well guys I just got back from the hobby store and I got the edge 540. why may ask because the box that the extra was in was damaged in shipping and to me and the store owner. he said he could order me another one but made me a deal on the edge so I came out only 10.00 dollers more for the edge. Now I know most of you will say that the tower .75 will be low on power for this plane but there is an up side to that. first I have not yet leaned all the 3D stuff and if I know my wife she may feel bad for me and let me get a bigger engine;)
