Welp,

FedEx Ground just arrived with two monster boxes... bigger than I expected...

Opening them up revealed this:

The overall quality is quite nice... no fingerprints or dings anywhere.

The only problem mine has is the canopy got cracked but I'm sure they'll send me another right out.

Looking inside the fuse (you can darn near stick your whole head in there) revealed good, solid deisng and construction.

The extra hardware pack includes two of the lightest, yet firm foam wheels I've seen. The tailwheel is quite hefty and definitely quality.

Some additional misc. hardware comes with it too...

This extra pack is offered with the Ultimate as an introductory special...

It's BIG alright... but it's reported to come in at 26-27 lbs with a BME 110 Extreme...

THat's not what mines getting tho...

How 'bout a ZDZ 100NG with cans? :)

Tho the plane isn't designed up fromt for a canister install, there seems to be LOTS of room for them. The engine fits nicely in the cowl too... no spark cap holes needed here.

I got the plane dry fitted together and placed all the parts, wheel pants, etc. that comes with the plane inside the fuse and weighed it all...

Just under 18 lbs...

My ZDZ 100NG with can, spiiner & prop will weigh 7 1/4 lbs

Add a lb for control surface servos and another for a lion battery system and you are at 27 1/4 lbs...

I'm guessing another lb for servo leads, throttle servo, fuel tank and the misc things...

So it ought to come in around 28 1/4 to 28 1/2 lbs...

It's got 2254 sq. in. of wing area so that's about: 29 oz. per sq. ft. not too shabby for a 37% aircarft.

The advertised weight of 26-27 lbs with a BME 110 seems right on target... s the ZDZ is a good lb heavier and I'm also using cans over the much lighter stock mufflers.

There is alot of opportunity for people to lighten the plane too...

Carbon fibre tailewheel would save 2 oz
carbon wingtubes (if available somewhere) maybe 8-10 oz
carbon spinner 4 oz

You could use a BME 110 with standard mufflers and save almost 2 lbs!!!

Doing all you could, I bet you could get it down to 25 1/4 lbs and under 26 oz. per foot.

Looks great, I hope the Edge is as nice[have one on order]. What is it covered with? The information on BME's web site is not very good.

Is it just the way it appears in the pics. or is the canopy & cowl shorter than most other Ultimates I've seem ?????

WE have a guy here in Albuquerque who has been flying one of the prototypes for months now and a very nice plane.

It's cowl is somewhat "boxier" than say the H9 or DP Ultimates... The canopy is about right, tho mine particularly looks to pop a little too vertical from the front (bubbly looking).


The wings are sheeted foam and light but sturdy. Everything seems well built overall. There are about 30 Ultimates that have been or are being shipped out to customers in the past week, so if they are here on RCU we should see some more input outside of mine.

I setup the firewall temporarily, mounted the ZDZ and checked the CG to this point... No issues there... Should balance easily.

The headers I got from ZDZ are too shallow of a drop and won't clear the engine box... But the DAA headers (an identical header pattern) fits very well... tho I might like something in between.

Using the silencers from RC Showcase, they should fit in there very nicely with opening just two formers and creating an air exit before the wingtube.

I don;t think anyone will have to cutout for spark boots, and there's MONDO area in the fuse for anything you want to put in there... smoke, redundant batts, etc...

The tires are awesome! They are foam but VERY firm and light... the hubs have three points of contact to the axles... both outsides and the center...

They are 4" and weigh somethng like 2.2 oz each... MUCH lighter than Sullivans or Dubros... yet I'm pretty sure they won't flatten or skew to the side even with 27 lbs on them...

my friend bought one with the bme 110 on front. got to see the maiden. i even flew some jr scat basic with it. very nice flying plane. i gotta have one! just wish BME would offer an ARC tho..

knife edge needs typical opposite aileron and up elevator coupling corrections. it seemed to track good, for what little iflew of it....
