Altech Pilatus Porter?

Anyone know if Altech is around-carries parts for their planes, or another source. Broke the windshield on my Pilatus Porter which is a kind of 'bubble' shape one piece and I don't have a vacuum former. I think these were built in Malaysia, if I remember a fellows comment in a thread way back. Anyone got a clue? I hate to have to try to make a plug and a former, but may have to resort to that. I have two Altech planes, both good fliers but never thought about parts, I crash so seldom-yea, right!

Altech/MRC in Edison NJ was the distributor for this kit. They might have a windshield or could tell you where to get one.

Called them today,no parts for balsa planes, wanted to sell me a new plane! Thanks for the tip, guess I'll try another tack.

UGH!.

I've been looking for Porter ARF's (or even a kit - which I might try assembling despite an old crushed-hand injury- the reason I build ARF's as a rule).

The porter's not a pretty plane, save in it's absolute utility, durability and power (the full-scale's got a turboprop plant).

Gotta dig the long nose.

Anyone know where I can get one of these? If not, anyone know a good PLANS service?

Thanks. Considering zenoah power...

wsmalley 07-16-2002 09:37 PM

Whada ya mean, Bubba, ugly!

I think it's one of the best looking planes ever built. I watch 'Air America' every week just to get a cheap thrill. But then, I gotta Fiesler Storch too! Ikon N'wst had, or has a Porter kit that looks cool. Don't know any one else with ARF. I'm thinking a few years back a German? firm-Ja....... may have had one. If you do a search on the net there are a fair number of sites on Porters and some links to plans, as I recall. And remember, Beauty is in.........Keep us Porter lovers advised if you find something.

Hi, I import a Pilatus Porter PC-6. The first Pilatus to make the scene. It has a 95" wing..is 15 pounds or <.. uses a 20 to 40cc engine. Mail me for more details if you like. [email protected]

A slightly forward mounted zenoah would be PERFECT on that. You could do the long nose (your model's nose is short) no problem.

The turbine in the porter's lighter (by a LOT) than, say the 450hp radial in the Cessna 195 I used to fly. So, to keep CG without blowing weight they make a long nose...

Anyhow. Thanks for the tip. Lemme know if anyone sees one of these great planes around. Sigh... makes me wish I could still fly.

Oh well.

And, oh... I'd be putting the high-lift wingtip devices on the plane and flying it 7-channel :)

Maybe I need to see if I can pull the orriginal blue's for it.

I'd also thought a mini-porter electric would kick @#(*. You could shove the electric way forward, then put the pack in the nose right behind it... and put mini's in the tail and behind the wing for control...

Maybe I should type less and design more.

DOES THIS PLANE FLY AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS?

Tailman 07-17-2002 10:20 AM

Yes, it does

The plane is wonderful in the air. I have stacks of Emails and letters from customers that just love the plane. It has flaps (prehinged) low power it is a trainer. Juice it up and it is a VERY capable sport plane. She uses 20 to 40cc gas or glow at 13 to 15 pounds. She loves to fly off water and a few people have contacted me and told me they use it for a glider tow and are very pleased with it. Watch for Sept. issue of AMA Model Aviation. Giant scale section. Sal Calvagna (hope I spelled that right) did a Write up on it. At this time I have 48 units in stock. It will be 4 months till the next shipment. I would assume with an ad and they write up I will sell out. THANX Anthony

Was the plane they tried to sell you a Porter? They went from an ARTC to an ARF a couple of years ago. Then the kit disappeared.

JimO: no, the person was trying to tell me about their new kits! I wanted to say look, " If you can't support what you've sold, why would I buy something else from you!" I've been working on a Top-Flite DC3 and needed some parts-sent a m.o. and had the stuff 2 1/2 days later-now that's service. You can download directions, etc from their site. I guess when you buy some planes, you need to buy two-one for spare parts! I have a ST.61 mounted 45 degrees inverted with a heavy shaft extension to preserve the intake and lines of the nose. Hoping to use mine as a glider tug. Have an 8' Schweitzer kit in the box which should be perfect.

I had the ARC, flew great with a OS-91 4stk.
I did flaps but it didn't need them but sure looked good.
I snaprolled it into the runway taking off in a strong cross wind, slow thumb.

How did you do flaps? I presumeyou had the foam wings. I put f.laperons on my but can't see any noticable effect. Couple of guys suggested turning them into spoilerons and raising them. Another sent me some drawings on adding flaps but think I'll wait Want to get the most out of the season. A .91 huh, I'll bet it would go vertical. My .61 with a prop shaft extension created some balance problems, have added 2oz. lead in the tail. What did you do with yours- I need a windshield

To do the flaps, I cut down the ailerons using the inboard 2/3ds for the flaps and mounted them with offset hinge points so they would fall away and down from the wing like "Fouler" flaps.
I cut servo pockets in the bottom of each wing and made a ply hatch to which each servo was mounted with servo tape.
I also had "fixed" drop tanks under the wings, saw them mounted on a full scale Porter in a magazine. I also fiberglassed the inside of the ABC cowl using glass cloth and CA.
Everything went out with the trash but for the landing gear, drop tanks and all the control surfaces, Just incase I should find another kit.

Porter upgrades

Well, that brings me to my next search for truth and justice-scale landing gear! For its size, my plane is pretty heavy. I mounted a Futaba PA1 in it and am still trying to get the sensor mounted just right. It lands fast and slightly bent the gear a couple of times. Therefore, I'd like to make some scale type gear with working shocks. Wonder if there are any on the market? Thought about modifying model car shocks but I don't know if they would be stout enough-any thought.

Have a look at some of the Robart Robo struts. Have seen some mods on other A/C. They really work.

Heh.. Maybe I can heft 2 zagi's aloft with mine. One under each wing.

Oh, did I mention the full-scale flies beautifully as well?

Here's my dream sheet of planes.

Lockheed Vega
Cessna 195
Beechcraft Starship 2000
Beech Staggerwing
Mooney M201se
Boeing 247
DC-2
Kitfox
A-4 Skyraider
The Thud (those who know what a thud is will agree)
The "Sandy"
Il-2 Sthurmovik
AlphaJet
XF-29
F-16 (sure, plenty out there but I've actually got 23 minutes of stick time on one of these :)

Anyhow... Just an airplane junkie drooling... There's others but these I really like.

Porter time

Geez, now I gotta go dig out the remains of my Altech Porter. I had one for about a month, went in nose first due to a poor battery restraint. Battery unplugged as the plane swung around the top of a hammerhead. All I had left was the tail feathers and the landing gear.

Just about that time I found a fellow in the Phillipines on rec.models.rc.air ( remember that?) who was asking if anyone could send him a Robart strut, since they were hard to come by over there.

Turns out he was the guy(co-owner?) whose company made the Porter ARFs for Altech. Since I was sending him the strut, he sent me a new cowl, new transparencies, and plans for the front end - plus copies of the 3-view drawings(actually there were about 6 views on 2 sheets) that Pilatus sent him as reference for the design.

I've got maybe 50 jumps out of one. Took off crossways on a runway once - had a good cross/head wind for that one. Check out this site for a whole bunch of good material, a couple of model Porter reviews, and even a source for plans

http://www.acr.net.au/~tony/home.html

It's all straight edges and flat surfaces, so scratch building one of any size should be pretty simple

-Never have gotten around to rebuilding that plane. I think I've got to now, as I also have a 100" Pilatus B-4 glider that would look great on tow behind it. Originally I flew it with a K&B 61, but I think it would be better with an OS 46FX or K&B 48. If I ever do get to rebuild it I'll put this paint scheme on it:

Is that a web address like-www.rec.......? I tried it and got a page cannot be displayed. Really cool model jumpers! How many servos, etc? There are some really neat paint jobs, your jump plane is one of the sharpest.

Hey, welcome friend.

When I was an overt maniac, I used to jump at Z-hills...your neck of the woods. I sure miss that atmosphere... DC-3s, Hooper's antics, 6-foot tall frog, way too much beer, etc..

Hey wsmalley:

That's a newsgroup address. A newsgroup is a text-based bulletin-board. It's not a web-site of any sort. Sort of a great-grandfather of sites like RCU though. Do a google search on "newsgroups" and it will give you an archive of old postings. Look for info on "usenet" if you want to post to a newsgroup.

Hope you can make up a new cockpit transparency for the Porter. I would take the old one, tape it together from the outside and make a plaster mold of the inside mold line. Sand the crack lines off the plaster, then use a heat gun to shrink 2-liter bottle material over it. Should make a fine replacement.

Lemme know if you need a copy of the plans for the nose section or anything.

Mike:

That pic had to be early 80's. 3-ring rig, but the big floppy suit. The flamingo porter was based in Deland (where I jump) starting n '88 for a few years. Back then, any turbine plane was a great lift, and that one was pretty awesome. I still have a jump ticket in my wallet from Z-hills that I need to use one of these days. Here's a pic from Z_hills Easter 2001. I'm the big guy at 11 o'clock anchoring the loops to the 4 way base, with the turquoise rig.

Sorry for going off topic. Will e-mail any further skydive stuff.
