H9 Easy2 as a tail-dragger ???
The way this plane is designed, I just cant figure out how I could get the tail wheel to attach to the rudder. Wondering if I made it a free turning wheel, if the rudder, with alot throw, would be enough to turn plane on the ground. Any thoughts?

The Easy2 would be no trouble to convert. The tailwheel rod on the cheaper types can be pushed through the gap in the elevator and fastened to the bottom of the rudder with a small sheet metal strap(might have to trim the bottom just a bit). If you buy one of the better tailwheel assys, you can run a pushrod (flexible type is probably best)from the rudder servo to the arm on the tailwheel. And your plan with the freewheeling wheel will also work except for taxiing in a bad crosswind. I have seen planes at our club taxi with just a skid on the back. Have to hold some up elvator, but I always do with any taildragger anyway.

I converted my trainer to a taildragger when I got tired of fixing the nose wheel. Easier to convert it than messing with a bent gear. You should put a plate in the fuse just ahead of the bulkhead at the leading edge. This will hold the main gear screws. It can be braced with some triangle stock or scrap. This will tie it into the sides for strength. The wheels on a taildragger should be just ahead of the leading edge to keep it from nosing over on the ground. Also bend a little toe-in in the main gear to make it track straight on takeoff. They can get squirrely on the run if the wheels are toed out. Makes the plane overreact to the rudder and start zigzaging down the runway.

What about CG on the taildrag Easy 2? Where do you reccomend? When you say "just ahead" of the leading edge of the wing, how far ahead? Thanks!

The CG remains the same -- on the spar... You can place the main gear just at, or a little ahead of the wing's leading edge.
Also, make sure you have the correct amount of toe in. I converted my EZ2 to a tail dragger and it was FUN until I turned the gear around... :confused: I used a separate push rod to steer mine, but think pushing the tail wheel wire through the stab and attaching it to the bottom of the rudder with a 90 degree bend and some fuel tubing would work well. Since the tail comes off of the EZ2 getting the fuel tubing screwed into the bottom if the rudder shouldn't be too hard... |
