Modeltech Extra 300 .30 ARF

Does anybody have this plane? I ordered one. I also ordered a Magnum XL-36Arnv RC BB engine. I figured, what the heck I got everything; flight pack, plane, and an engine for $250.00 from Quantum. BTW this is my 3rd Plane. I have been flying for 1 year now.
Any comments? Prop Size recommendations? Mike B. |

I HAD one!! I started out with a Magnum 32 & it was way under powered so I broke down & put a little OS LA 40 I had laying around in it & it was somewhat better. The plane flew excellent & was a blast to fly as long as the wind didnt blow. Then it was a bear!! Like to have not made it to the runway a few times. Dont let that scare you though. Its a good plane.

I picked one up a few weeks ago. I've been trying to decide what engine to put in it. I've got an OS 25F ABC and a Saito FA-45. Both are older engines. I think I've decided to use the OS since it is smaller, lighter, and more powerful. I also found I would have to hack away some of the engine mounting area to accomidate the carb on the Saito.
I've done a bunch of searches and did come across someone who said he flew one with an OS 25FSR, which is a less powerful engine than the ABC. He said it flew fine. From the specs on your engine, it should do well. Don't know what to suggest on the prop size. |

For the prop, I took a friends advice and purchased MA 10 x 5. I think I will break it in witth a MA 9 x 6. Quantum had to order my plane from the factory so I have to wait a week or so to receive it. Jees, all this CA and epoxy and nothing to use it on. |

I have had this plane for several years. It is a very good flier with an OS 25 ABC and 10x5 prop, plenty of power and very aerobatic. I am very surprised that rsrogers used an OS 40, sounds like way to much power[:-] He is right about landing though, it can be skitish in wind. Make sure you do your approaches with some power. Also, the plane has no self righting capabilities and will go where you point it so be careful if this is your 3rd plane. Have fun!![8D] |

OS .40LA 1.0 HP. OS .25F ABC .8 HP. Not much power difference, but quite a bit more weight.

I did purchase the Magnum .36 and MA 10x5 prop. I think that will be a good match.
I called ModelTech and they still have no planes to ship to Quantum. Is this plane that popular? ................ or is it that this plane is that un-popular? |

Must be popular, Tower's showing them out of stock too. I know they had some a month ago, cause I got one. I've been too busy lately, still working on the assembly. Mounted the elevator last night.

Both local Hobby People stores have these in stock ($89.99 + tax), but not sure if they will ship from the store (doubt it).

Sorry I didn't reply earlier, I was busy getting ready for a trip. Not sure if you got the plane or not. If not, or for others who might buy one, here's some observations on assembly:
1) Make sure you drill the hole for the top cowl screw into the firewall. If you drill it further back, such as aligned with the bottom two screws, you will put a hole in the fuel tank. Don't ask me why I know this :-) 2) I ended up using different pushrod material for the elevator and rudder. The ones that came with the plane were binding in the tube. 3) Check the landing gear screws after the first few flights. They have a way of working loose. 4) With the OS 25 I ended up with the receiver immediately behind the firewall and the battery behind the throttle servo. A heavier engine will require moving the battery even further back. 5) I replaced the wing bolts with nylon ones. Used a tap to cut threads in the plywood. 6) I fly off a grass field so I did not bother with the wheel pants. I also did not bother with the pilot. 7) Drill a small hole somewhere in the cockpit before installing the canopy. This will allow the pressure to escape. 8) Pay attention to the recommended surface throws. The starting ones are more than adequate for the first flights. 9) The plywood for the aileron servo mounts was not thick enough. I had to cut a few more pieces for my servos (Futaba S3004). |

I bought one used.......has a magnum .35 engine....I love the plane, very fast. Mine cuts the wind great especially for a small plane. The only problem I have if there is no head wind, i can not get it to slow down well for the landing, so it lands a little hot.
Seriously I have 6 planes in my hanger now all ready to fly and this one is in the top 2 for favorites. Tim |
