U-CAN-DO 60
I’m building a G.P. U-CAN-DO 60, 7 channel Futaba radio, FS-91 Surpass 4-stroke Engine with Pump Unit. I read a few building/review articles, they were installing Sato 100s. Has anyone built this with a O.S. 91? How does the CG work out with the O.S. engine? How did you cut the cowl to fit the muffler? I read a few comments on beefing up the gear mount, is this necessary, and if so, what did you do to beef it up? A few people used washers to angle the engine from the fire wall, what did you do? The directions don’t suggest angling the engine, does it really make a difference? The only modification I plan to do is replace the control horns and rods, I’m using 2-56 carbon rods, and Dubro heavy duty control horns. Any tips or suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

RE: U-CAN-DO 60
Before someone tells you to read the existing thread I'll tell you that the OS 91 is a good match .The thrust angle wasn't an issue for me , I like the APC 15x4W prop, the CG won't be a problem. I fly off a asphalt runway and never had a problem with the gear mount. It might be more of a concern flying off a grass surface. It wouldn't be a bad idea to beef it up but because I haven't done it I can't offer any advice
Good luck |
RE: U-CAN-DO 60
Yeh, when someone tells me to read an existing thread that is 3485 posts long, that kinda annoys me. I'd go with the washers to add a little right thrust. One washer top and bottom worked fine for me.

RE: U-CAN-DO 60
I thought I did a search for the thread, mmm, probably did not get the key words right, or its archived out of the normal search engines.
Dave I noticed you put the remote plug and fuel filler behind the fire wall, around where the tank is, looks like a good place, if there is room. I think you indicated that the tank was over the CG, how is that set up? I'll do another search, I don't mind if someone directs me to an existing thread. I'm waiting for the carbon rods, and some other stuff mail order, just put the gear together last night. The wheel pants are well designed, they look like they are made to stay on, unlike some other kits. I saw no reason to change anything. I have been flying for 12 years, and fly from a paved runway; however, you never no when a stiff wind and a dead stick at low alt. will send you into the farmers furrows, still looking at beefing up the gear. Thanks guys for not flaming me on the thread, I usually find them, just getting lazy, I guess. |

Hi Mark..:)... best thing is i suppose ..to post a few pics up [:-]....should be self explanatory really ....but if you have any questions just shoot..:)..we'll make it a sort of pictorial guide to the UCD if you like...:)
(1) Tank over C of G picture is before GP fueler or remote were fitted ,(2) Du-Bro filter at side of servo....(3)...little ply plate to go on inside of fuse to support the fueler & remote point..(4)..Engine instillation.. |
RE: U-CAN-DO 60
I decided to put my tank in the traditional place, just forward of the wing. I can always move it latter, I couldn't find a tank at the local shop to fit under the wing. I bought a remote glow system thats pretty slick, it mounts a female stereo Jack to the fuse side, then you have an adapter that connects a male stereo jack to a glow starter, since it requires hardly any force to plug into the mounted jack, there is no need to wrestle with a back plate inside the fuse, it fit perfectly below the tank. I decided to mount the fueler on the firewall in the cowl, I have done this before and know how to make the mount with 3/32 ply. I have had these fueler points leak before, and if it happens, its better outside the fuse, even though I fuel prof-fed the entire compartment.
I also came up with a pretty slick way of mounting the cowl. I'm sure someone else probably has done it this way but I haven't read about it. I posted it in this thread: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_14...32/key_/tm.htm All I have to do is adjust the control surfaces, mount the batery and radio with velcro, and break in the engine, and she is ready to go. probably get it in the air this week end. |
RE: U-CAN-DO 60
I NEED SOME HELP ON THE C.G. OF THIS U CAN 60 IF YOU GUYS DON'T MIND, I HAVE BUILT AND C.G SEVERAL PLANES IN MY 10 YEARS AT THIS HOBBY BUT IS BAFFLEING THE HEC OUT OF ME. I CAME BACK 4 7/8 " FROM THE LEADING EDGE AND USING A C.G. MACHINE, THE PLANE CAME UP NOSE HEAVY. I HAVE HAD THE BATTERY AND RECIEVER IN EVERY POSSIBLE HOLE IN THE PLANE, I GOT THE FUSE LEVEL BY ADDING 3/4 OZ OF LEAD RIGHT UNDER THE ELEVATOR SEVERO. IF YOU SLIGHTY BREATH ON THE TAIL FEATHERS THE TAIL END DROPS VERY LIGHTY AND WON'T COME BACK ON THE C.G. THE SAME HAPPENS WHEN YOU BREATH ON THE TRU-TURN THE PLANE GO'S NOSE HEAVY. THIS IS MY FIRST 3 D IS THIS NORMAL WHEN C GING THIS TYPE OF PLANE???????? ALSO ON EVERY PLANE I HAVE DONE THERE IS NORMALLY SHEETING OR A RIB, OR A SPAR THAT YOU C G ON. AT 4 7/8 YOU ARE C.GING THE PLANE ON THE COVERING WHICH STARTS SAGGING FROM THE WEIGHT. I CAN'T SEE HOW THIS WOULD GIVE A
ACCURRATE C.G. THANKS IN ADVANCE GUYS. MORGANFLYBOY |
RE: U-CAN-DO 60
Morgan, forget the steel rods that hold the stance of the CG machine, screw the brackets down or clamp them to a board @ 14-1/2" center to center. That will put you under the two closest ribs to the center. A far as balancing this mid wing craft, it proves to be most difficult compared to a high/low wing model. If it is balanced out correctly it will fall forward or backward with the same ease. Thats as close as you will get. I may have had it stay level once or twice, but that could just have been luck. I even eliminated the brackets and drilled two holes in a piece of ply @ 14-1/2" and stood the ball rods up like fence posts. Good luck, Joe
