GP Venus 40 engine mount Q
OK, I have a nice big ASP .80 FS to go in my Venus. Question I have is regarding the drive washer clearance. With the engine as far back on the mount as I can get it the distance to the prop washer is 125mm - the exact distance stated in the manual. However the tech update on the GP site states the distance should be 114mm. What difference will this make? Will it still fly OK with the original measurement (I guess it must, but why have they changed it?)

this plane tends to be nose heavy so by moving the engine back will help eliminate any unnecessary weight to be added to the tail...

Can you make the cowl fit or is it now too short?

I installeda a saito 72 around the 120 mm mark and not he recommended 125 and the cowl fit nice, it will just sit further back then normal...

Thanks...Well I've no problem adding weight to the tail - as the plane is overpowered anyway. The cowl will fit OK... So I guess I'll be buying some lead then...

Doood - I flew this plane with a piped 46fx and clocked it at 94 MPH ... this plane was well balanced, super light and a blast to fly with the lightweight OS... why would you want to put that .80 in there ? I don't think it will fly nearly as well as you think with all the extra weight.
Out of the box with a 46fx this was one of the nicest small planes I have ever flown... DP |

I think the original measurement put the carb on a 2 stroke sticking out in front of the cowl when it was all mounted. It made you cut way too much of the front out.
My suggestion is fly it before you get to carried away chasing a CG point. Use some stick on weights so you can change it around easily, then move the battery as needed. I always went for a setting that gave good knife edge flight, then for me everything else felt good. My CG was most likely a little ahead of what most people put theirs on, but, I didn't try to turn it into a 3D machine either. Ed M. |
