Seagull Extra 300 flutter

I made an impressive lawn dart with the Extra 300 today due to elevator flutter. Didn't hear it. Now I do have a Saito .72 on it which I know is overpowered. I was in a full throttle slight dive. I was having a great time with knife edges and snaps before it happened. My only saving grace was that it plowed in to the tall grass at about a 30 degree angle. Caved in the firewall (which was reinforced), broke one wing and the rudder hinges broke. It is fixable, but just need time and patience. Building or assembly I don't mind, but I hate fixing. . I should have got the 60 size, but it was a gift.

The Question is about wing caps (counter balance). Has anyone modified theirs and what size did you make it. I am hoping it will help with the flutter and I have to remember now to fly full all the time.

RE: Seagull Extra 300 death spiral

I took my extra out to the field yesterday after a long waited maiden flight (after researching all the threads to find out why I had to add so much weight to balance this brick out , thats how it flew by the way I used a Magnum 91 four stroke with a 2 oz. nose hub and a
chunk of lead four inches long 3/4 inches wide and 3/8 inches thick added to the engine area with also 6v nmhi 1450mah pack in the same area to balance this puppy at 4 inches back from the leading edge at the fuse. The first time up I had a little trim adjustment and that was about it the elevator was a little touchy so I brought in and landed made adjustment to servo horns and when I landed it the first time it was coming in pretty good and it was about 3ft. off of the ground and it just fell out of the air so I thought the next time I land this thing that I"ll have to come in a little hotter well there was never a second landing. I took it off for its second flight was flying it real easy at about 1/2 to3/4 throttle was turning to the left at about 200- 300 ft.in the air and the plane went into a kind off a flat spiral could not control so cut the throttle and pancaked into the blacktop. At first it looked like one of the control surfaces let go but after inspecting the plane everything looked like it was working at the time of in-pack. The planes a total loss. ARE THERE ANY OTHER PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH A SIMILAR EXPERIENCES WITH THIS PLANE?

Just curious Gareye..how much did it end up weighing? I have one that I'm putting the servos in tonite. I'm putting a TT .91 on mine. I can already tell that even with the heavy as an anvil TT it's going to come out tail heavy.

Sorry forgot to weigh it before the first flight!

I flew mine for 10 months before I put it in just today. I dumb thumbed it. Had a TT 61 in it spinnin a 14x4. The plane was a dream to fly, never had a day of trouble. It did all the 3D. Also had a 1400Mah battery sitting just in front of the servo tray and a 14oz fuel tank. Didn't have a piece of lead in it. Why you would want to put such a large engine in it I'll never understand but good luck, its a heck of a plane.

Dig It....I'm putting a TT .91 four stroke in it. That's well within the recommended range (.65-1.00 four stroke). How ya figure it is "such a large engine?"

RE: Seagull Extra 300 flutter

Pardon me, I thought you meant 2 stroke

RE: Seagull Extra 300 flutter

I thought that might be what you were thinking. I think TT made a .91 2 stroke at one time but I have never seen one and I agree a .91 2 stroke would be too much engine. You are pardoned.;)
