My first ARF! Ryan STA-M Engine....?
Hey guys,
What are the pros and cons? 2 stroke (.60-.90) vs. 4 stroke (to 1.20)? It will be an inverted mount. Can I get a scale type muffler for a 4 stroke? |
RE: My first ARF! Ryan STA-M Engine....?
I don't know about the muffler, but a bird like that would definitely benefit from a 4-stroke

RE: My first ARF! Ryan STA-M Engine....?
I agree, four stroke allllll the way with that one!
For one thing I have never had any luck with an inverted 2 stroke but have four strokes inverted and run just fine.:D On the muffler, check out www.bissonmufflers.com or www.slimlinemfg.com |
RE: My first ARF! Ryan STA-M Engine....?
Go with a 1.20 four stroke. The Ryan is one of the most beautiful arfs in the market and deserves no less. Also look at the Robart robostruts. They are $129 but worth every penny.

RE: My first ARF! Ryan STA-M Engine....?
My buddy has the Ryan and has a 91 magnum 4 stroke with the robostruts. The airplane weighs over 11 pounds. Will the 91 be too small of a engine to fly it? He hasnt tried it yet and is thinking of takeing the 91 out and putting in a 120. Any suggestions? Thanks.

RE: My first ARF! Ryan STA-M Engine....?
I installed a Magnum 120 in my GP Ryan STA-M and am very happy with it. If you use this motor be sure to lower the placement of the gas tank in the model since many motors are quite sensitive to the level of the tank and will not run properly if the tank is too high. Moreover, if the tank is too high the fuel will probably siphon out when the engine is not running. These concerns do not apply, or not nearly as much, for pumped engines like the OS 120 pumped engine. As for the exhaust, I bought an additional manifold piece from GP, made for the OS 120 but which fits perfectly on the Magnum, which allowed me to fully enclose the entire exhaust system in the cowl. I also reinforced the wheel openings on the wheel fairings which I also recommend since they are a bit fragile. It looks beautiful in the air and is easy to fly but don't get it too slow on final approach. To see photos my plane take a look at the Sept 2004 club newsletter at AMPS-RC.com.

RE: My first ARF! Ryan STA-M Engine....?
We had one at our club with an OS 90 4s and he had to fly full throttle. Takes offs took a very long run, definitely go with 120, either OS or Saito. Minnflyer is right this bird deserves a 4s engine. He also had the Robart struts, worked very well. They saved his plane many times due to rough landings.

Great input guys!
Hey Touch and go. With the exhaust fully inclosed does the motor stay cool enough?
|
RE: Great input guys!
Quick****w, I've had no problem at all with cooling; note that I did cut out two additional holes on the bottom of the cowl for better cooling. Note also that initially I had a problem with the exhaust pipe joints staying tight--the vibration and heat would loosen the joints no matter how tight I made them. There may be a better solution but JB Weld did the trick; now if I ever want to undo it that could prove interesting! Take a look at geocities.com/jbrundtz/st-m.html for a good website for how to put together this model with the exhaust completely enclosed. One thing's for sure--GP's estimate that this ARF can be properly put together in as little as 15 hours is conservative! It took me a lot longer.

Fed Ex just droped in
Tower Hobbies is unbelievable. I ordered this bird yesterday morning and I just signed for it..... and that was standard shipping. It's like Christmas....................................

Touch and Go
I'm interested in that geocities site you suggest but it returns a "not found". I'd appreciate it if you would double check it for me. Thanks a bunch! |
RE: My first ARF! Ryan STA-M Engine....?
YS- 120 FZ pulls it like a champ!

RE: My first ARF! Ryan STA-M Engine....?
You will be best off with a side mount on a 2C because ot the exhaust configuration (esp with the Pitts style muffler). I love the sound of a 2C engine on a pitts style muffler esp the big engines ... almost like a gas engine. The Ryan STA is a lovely plane and at the weight its coming in a 90 sized 2C is just about enough only. Nothing great, more for scale flying. Go with a 108 2C ... remember its about 11.5 lbs. Again, a 4C engine sounds kewl too for scale flying when you putter about.
Of course if you have the cash then go for a nice 4C like the YS110 or YS140DZ. :) |
RE: My first ARF! Ryan STA-M Engine....?
I have one of these birds. I have a OS 91 four stroke and I feel it's a perfect match. Take off's are at 1/2 throttle and fly between 1/2 and 3/4. People love to shove a 120's in a 91 plane. This plane is so light, in my oppinion, the 120 is too much for this plane. You will love it with a 91. In whatever you decide, you will enjoy this plane. Good luck.

Quick****w, try this for the website: geocities.com/jbrundtz/ST-M.html. The website is good, I just checked it. IMHO, go with a four stroke on this model.
