YS 63FZ-S or saito 72

What would be the better choice the saito 72 GK or the ys 63fz-s?

Thanks
Robert

Go into the engine forum and do a search for this topic. There was a pretty long thread on this. Also read the threads on YS .63S versus Saito .91 and YS .63S versus Saito .82a.

I had two Saito 72's, and I now have two YS 63's. I can tell you one thing: the YS 63 will blow away the Saito 72 in terms of idle, throttle response, and power output.

Saito 82 is more of a direct comparison to the YS 63, that is they are approximate in weight and cost, with the hair splitting in favor of the Saito most times.

If you tend to fly your planes WOT and speed is the objective then the YS 63 probably makes more sense. If you want a little more modulation (torque) in the lower rpms then the Saito would probably do better. In other words, the power curve of the YS is steeper like a 4 cylinder turbo charged engine, where the power curve of the Saito is going to be broader, like a V8.

Truly, you are splitting hairs when comparing these two engines (YS 63 vs. Saito 82). Get the one that is cheapest!

If you insist on a comparison to the .72 GK, the YS is going to outperform the Saito .72, like Richard said. The GK will either look a lot better or a lot worse depending on aesthetics. Personally, I don't much care what the engine 'looks' like.

I should mention I will be using this in a rambler 45 and plane to have the engine inverted.

Thanks,
Rob

One other thing about the YS. It favors an inverted mount . The engine hates to be mounted upright as I found out with my Hanger 9 Twist.

Ditto on that. The YS loves to idle and run inverted. The YS is also more ideal in 3D or acrobatic planes where the fuel tank will be mounted over the CG.

recen tly I sold my ys.53 and it screamed..and it was more powerful than an y 72..sooooo a ys 63 is far more powerful than the 72 if thats all you want..I love satio's too.they are extremely reliable and have good output ..I sold mine as it was too small.I am in the process of finishing my first gasser..

You cant beat the pressurized fuel system of the ys. It pulled a pheonix sukhoi off the runway in about 50 feet ( a bit of a wind). I have enyas and OS's as well but YS is a real gem.
