Megatech Nitro Capitol Flyer Wing Failure
1 Attachment(s)
Has anyone encountered wing failure with Megatech's fancy adjustable wing dihedral brace. I was flying over the weekend training my father-in-law and the plywood socket that secures the balsa section of the wing to the dihedral brace tore completely out of the wing in flight resulting in both wing halves to separate from the plane and sent the fuselage spiraling into the ground. Examining the pieces after the crash, I noticed that they put the wing securing bolts right through the lower wing spar creating a stress riser there...And wouldn't you know it, that is exactly where the wing failed. I had a OS 46 FX on it and it flew much better with that than a bushinged OS .40. We weren't doing anything fancy and it failed in nearly level flight.
My opinion is first of all, they failed to properly glue the plywood to the wing and second, the lower spar has a huge hole through it weakening it. If anyone has one of these that has not crashed yet, it would be wise to wick some thin CA between the balsa and the plywood, as well as around the wing securing bolt hole to strengthen the lower spar. Another good move is to epoxy the two wing halves together. I'm still waiting to see if they are going to warranty it. It is well within the 90 days and in my opinion it is a manufacturer defect and design flaw. |
