Has anyone seen or purchased the new Stinger 60 ARF? I have always admired this plane and am seriously considering purchasing it within the next 2 months if I can find out any info on it. If you own one, have seen one, or are flying one, please let me know what you think. Thanks! John S.

I would like to know about this airplane also. What is it covered with?

I'm with you guys on that one too.

I have been thinking about getting this guy. I have a new OS .91FX that is screaming for a plane...

I looked at one at the LHS. It looks like Ultracote but how does one tell for sure? The salesman and I looked through all the documentation included and the only reference to the covering is "Name brand iron-on covering" that is printed on the box. The red on the tail, etc. is sort of an orange-red that we were able to match up to an Ultracote color (we think).

The "kit" looks to be very complete. The only things not included that are required are the usual: 2 1/2" spinner, fuel line, engine, prop and radio. Oh yeah, the stars shown on the picture are included on a graphics sheet in the box. I want one! :D :D

What is the quality of the construction?

PatrickJ 08-09-2002 10:40 PM

I took another look at the "kit" (then ended up bringing it home with me!). The fit and finish really looks good. It has lots of alignment aids built in so it should go together easily (and end up straight to boot). It's all wood construction and feels very light (haven't had a chance to weigh it yet).

So far, I have found only one thing that needs help. That is the ply wing bolt plate. It does not appear to be securely glued to the inside of the fuselage at the front corners, rather it feels "loose", but is captive under a plywood doubler that's glued to the inside of the fuse. It does appear to be well glued to the former at the rear of the wing saddle. Should be a peice of cake to add some glue. Also, the rear servo mount rail is mounted under the wing hold-down plate, which will make drilling the servo mounting holes a real challenge. I will CA everything I can reach, just like I do with any ARF, just in case.

There are strings in the wings for the servo leads to be pulled with, all the holes in the covering (except for the pushrod exits in the tail) are already cut out and the alignment setup for the wing looks like it will guarantee success. The whole thing actually looks like it should go together in just a few hours.

The covering job is superb! I found only one minor spot (on the horiz. stab) that will require a little heat to tighten it up. The cowling and wheelpants are fiberglass and the landing gear is the same one that comes in the 60 size Stinger kit (but the holes have been drilled for you!)

Now if I can just find a way to sneak it into my workshop (an upstairs bedroom) so I can get started on it.

I'm now a happy camper! Can hardly wait to get it together!

John,

Would you believe I just happened to have a like new OS 91FX up on the top shelf of my closet? Just need to get a Pitts type muffler and Im in business. Should haul it around pretty well, don't you think?

Wish me luck.. :D :D

Before you spend the money for a pitts muffler. Let me make you an extersion for the original muffler so it will fit completely outside the cowling. I have head some undesirable conditions occuring because of using a pitts type muffler. The extension might do the same I don't know but it is worth a try. I will be making me an extension for my fx 90 .

What kind of undesirable results??

I also have the .91FX with a Pitts muffler (Bisson)

I have read on this forum that some flier have experienced engine heating problems and poor engine running conditions. I cannot verify any of these claims since I ran mine with the stock muffler. So I decided to stay with the stock muffler.

I don't want to get off thread, but there has been a problem with many OS .91FX engine and the midrange leaning because of a bad o-ring. Air has been known to leak in around the card and then the mixture would go lean. This in every case would lean out the engine and it would over heat.

In a few cases people have had some success with OS sending the engine back or asking for a replacement ring. Oter guys have replaced the carb assembly with one from Perry.

The engine is a powerhouse and LIGHT! It should be a great match for the Stinger.

Pat,

Oh yeh, I think that the 91FX will haul that 60 stinger around pretty good. Down here at Salem RC we have alot of our guys using Pitts mufflers on 91FX's and I haven't heard of a problem.

I wonder how a Tower Hobbies 75 would pull that thing. I have one in a 60 size Stick and it pulls vertical with authority. Any comments out there???

Engine fit up

Lee,
I too have considered this model. I was wondering how the engine fits within the cowl. I would be putting a 4 stroke in as well but don't like the idea of having to fit the cowel around it, etc.
From the pics the cowl looks large but what do you think?
Thanks
Dennis

The cowling for the 60 arf Stinger is a very nice one. it is one piece fiber glass with all of the front cut out work done for you. This cowling is at least 1/2" wider than the fuselage on each side. I had at one time thought about putting a Saito 91 in one of the kits. There is adequate room for the 4 stroke. The only problem I had with the OS 91 FX was the muffler came out right in the middle of the cowling. The 4 stroke muffler will not present this problem. Good luck and good flying.
Lee

You can see from the box sitting on the plane that the cowling will dwarf the 91 size engine.

If the ARF Stinger is built like the kit stinger. Then it has a built in weak point, all stingers seem to break there. The point is the forward point of the wing saddle, just look at it from the side and you will see what I mean. see if you can get some sort of doubler to beef that point up.
The stingers all fly great, from the smallest to the biggest.

I doubled my 120 size wing saddle and have been banging this poor thing around for over a year with no problems.

Thanks for your post That is good info. I think Lanier had addressed this issue on the arf. However this is the type of information that we nee to know.

I was talking with Patrick last night. That is the guy who purchased the one in the photo. Notice that stars are not installed on the surfaces. They come on a separate sheet. They are stickons. Pat says he is not enjoying installing these.
When My rich uncle get out of the poor house I plan to purchase one of these also. Don't plan to use a 60 engine. Use a 90 and you will have many hours of flying fun.
