My Crashed Aresti 40, Replaced!
Well folks after a week I received a nice package via UPS today. Some of you may have read my post in one of the threads a couple of weeks ago concerning my Aresti 40 falling apart in midair. Well they replaced it, noting that I had not cut the wood while trimming out the covering before mounting the horizontal stab to the fuselage. They suspect that it was a glue joint failure, theirs not mine, that ultimately caused the failure in the first place.
I'll be making the tail out of 1/4 sheet balsa this time just to be sure and replacing all of the hinges with robart hinge points. Sometimes there are (moderately)happy endings! Scott |

Hello ! My name is Bernie. I just read your experience with the Aresti 40. After about 40 to 50 flights with a Hobbistar 60 mkII, I wrecked that plane. After some time of trying to decide what to buy and try, I talked to a club pilot instructor (not from my club) who convinced me that the Aresti would be a good next plane. So I bought this plane. At the present time I only have the main wing together! Could you tell me if this plane has any chance of being a descent flier? Although I had many flights on that 70", .60 powered high wing trainer (and experimented a bit with inverted flight) I still need to stay at it! Also this would be my first tail dragger. The other planes have been trike gear. I have a Sig kougar, and am building a King Kobra by Sig as well (.40 &.60 respectively.) There have been other trainer type plans as well.
I was hoping you could give me your honest opinion about this plane and any tips. I certainly don't plan on just jumping to the next level with out some more training and advice! Thank you for your help! |
Aresti opinions
Well if you have a Kougar and have successfully flown it I think the Aresti won't give you any surprises. I will tell you that you should NOT exceed the recomended elevator thows though or you will lift off to soon and stall the airplane!
The Aresti tracks very straight on take off and even though it is a taildragger it's not difficult at all to get off the ground. Mine met it's demise a couple of weeks ago due to my overzealous attempt at experimenting with the C.G. I will build another one in the future but I have learned that you should NOT have the balance more than an eighth of and inch back from the max recommended in the kit instructions. I hd mine 3/8" to the rear of the rearmost recommended and tip stalled it during a low slow fly by prior to touchdown. The plane was totally uncontrollable and hit the ground on the nose and the right wingtip, braking the fuselage into 3 peices. This is also a model that is not easily repaired once broken since the punched ply parts it is constructed from tend to shatter on impact, resulting in a LOT of peices to recover. Like I said, if you have flight time on the Kougar you should be fine. If, however, you only have flight time on a trainer and are not VERY sure of your abilities, leave it on the shelf till you have some time with another low wing plane that is a bit slower and more predictable, like the Kougar is. |

Yes horizon hobby are good people to deal with with things like that. Thats why they have my business when it comes to R/C items .

Horizon is my favorite also. They have been great with me when I had wing problem with a H9 ARF. Replaced plane. I'm also a Jr fan sooo- I love them<G> Horizon also has deep pockets, by that I mean they are so big that replacing kits - wings etc that ARE bad they can do it. I has a SIG 300x come apart in the air and I know it was the kits fault. They would do nothing about it.
So big is better in this case. Horizon is one large distributer. Dave |
