4 * 60 problem
 

Ive got a problem with my 4 * 60. The link between the throttle servo and the engine throttle (which came with the ARF) is too weak and wont move the throttle. I need a solution for this, and im sure many people have had this problem. Thank you.

Too weak as in it flexes and bends when the servo arm moves so that the movement isn't translated properly at the throttle??

I always use piano wire for the throttle. You can adjust it easy and bend it where you need it. That is what I use on all my planes!

I'm still using the stock throttle setup with no problems on my
4*60/Mag91.. It did flex some due to the guide being a little
short but I just lightly soldered the ends of the cable just shy
of the guide and it's been working great..

maybe he didn't get the answer he wanted over there. I don't scan the forums, and I have a solution to his problem. However, if he follows your advice, he'd never get my fabulous advice :D
On my last couple of planes I've used the plastic pushrods--the ones that have an inner and outter tube. They work great, and come in all kinds of flexibility. I wouldn't use them for anything else, but they are great for routing a throttle linkage through the fuse! Just a thought.

I use Goldenrods for everything, why do you use them only for the throttle?

All the other suggestions sound good to me, although...

I found I was having a similar problem my Eagle 2 trainer, the pushrod for the throttle runs inside a nylon guide, from the servo, to the fire wall... When I was throttling up and down I was losing up to 50% of the servo movement in the flexing of the nylon tube and pushrod...

To combat this I actually fibre glassed the nylon guide to the side of the plane, so now it won't move at all, there is no loss of servo movement from play in the pushrod and changes in the throttle settings are instant and smooth as the pushrod can't flex anymore...

The PIPE here again...I've got a Four Star 60 kit MYSELF to kitbash into a CROPDUSTER this winter and Spring (own design fuselage with MOONEY style tail surfaces, for OS FS-90 REAR camshaft four stroke power)...and if you check out the Sullivan METAL CABLE pushrods available at http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFU94&P=0 ...AND at http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFU95&P=0 ...

...you'll find THE pushrods I always use for push-pull cable control on throttles!!!

I've used the ALL plastic ones before, but even from Sullivan, these DO have a shrinkage problem in colder weather (I LOVE flying off SKIS when it's snowed in the winter)...and the METAL CABLE pushrods from Sullivan totally eliminate that annoying thermal shrinkage problem that I've repeatedly had with the all-plastic ones.

To avoid metal-on-metal contact on the engine end of things, I usually try to use an OLDER style DuBro 2-56 thread ball link, like what you can find at http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXD897&P=7 (especially when the FACTORY SUPPLIED metal throttle arm MUST be used on one of my four stroke engines)...but IF I can replace the metal throttle arm with a HOMEMADE "flat plate" one, made from EPOXY fiberglass PC board substrate material, ANY metal clevis then can be used on the engine end!!!

Also, if the larger .056 inch (1.42 mm) diameter cable is needed to be used on cable control runs...on a plane that needs them for AERODYNAMIC control functions...REPLACING the stock "yellow spaghetti" tubing with FIBERGLASS tubing available from http://www.cstsales.com/FGMicroRods.htm ...it's the T612-4 item on that page, that I usually use...for a near-STRAIGHT-run from servo to control surface horn, gives the BEST results in my experience!

Hope these tips can help you decide what metal cable pushrod to use on your Four Star 60's throttle...should you choose to use one...

Yes, Gtac, those are the ones. I choose to use them only in throttle because of the flexibility issue. But, they do come in very stiff models as well. I just like the idea of having a solid metal or wooden pushrod controling my elevator, rudder, and ailerons. Just my opinion, though. This works excellent for the throttle. However, you have to be able to glue the red outter sleeve to the bulkheads in the fuse, or it will not work right. At least glue them every couple or three inches or so. A little CA works great. Then, that yellow inner rod will bend around anything. Insert the metal allthreads in each end and use. Works like a dream. Hope this helps. Good luck.
